Columbus: Downtown Developments and News
Large Public Art Installation Coming Downtown This Summer “A 229-foot-long suspended sculpture created by artist Janet Echelman will be installed above the intersection of Gay Street and High Street this summer. The project, which was first announced in late 2021, was commissioned and funded by local developer Jeff Edwards of Edwards Companies, and is being touted as the largest private contribution to public art in the city’s history. The project’s official title is “Current”. “With Current, we’re reaching into history to redefine our future,” stated Edwards. “This piece will be the north star for Columbus’ new culture-centric compass. I envision this to be the first drop in the pond, sending waves throughout the Gay Street District.” Once completed, Current will be donated to the Columbus Museum of Art, which will oversee the care and maintenance of the sculpture. Echelman’s inspiration for the piece comes from the history of Downtown as a place of innovation, and the early use of gas-lit lights on its original street arches.“ https://columbusunderground.com/large-public-art-installation-coming-downtown-this-summer-we1/

Columbus: Downtown: Discovery District / Warehouse District / CSCC / CCAD Developments and News
amped91 replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionExactly. A family member is getting married just a little further up N 4th in IV, and we’re already making plans on bats/places to walk to afterwards. Having a venue like this within walking distance of Jackie O’s, Wolf’s Ridge, Kee, etc. is a great idea, imo.

amped91 replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionGenesis Downtown to open this month on the corner of 4th and Long streets “Downtown Columbus will gain a new event space at the end of April. Genesis Downtown will open at the end of April and is booking events starting in May. Genesis Downtown is the first tenant in the building in nearly a decade, Keene said. The building is being redeveloped by Connect Real Estate. Floors three through six will have micro apartments and the second floor will feature offices for the Ohio Domestic Violence Network. The 2,700-square-foot space can fit about 150 people, depending on the event. The first floor has 14-foot ceilings, which showcase some parts of the original crown molding. The space is a mix of historic and modern, with simple light fixtures and flooring that mimics what would have originally been there.” https://www.bizjournals.com/columbus/news/2023/04/04/genesis-downtown.html

amped91 replied to Summit Street's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionA proposal for more infill in the Franklin Park neighborhood, at 329 Loeffler Ave. The .3 acre site is currently occupied by one SFH. Proposal is to build seven townhome units. Apparently, this is a revision from a plan the developer proposed in 2019 to build six apartments and three townhomes.

amped91 replied to CMH_Downtown's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionThat I can agree with. There’s really no sense, IMO, in doing demo if the replacement is the same or just slightly higher (or even worse, lower ☠️) density. But if you’re going bigger, then you can provide hundreds of places for people to live and spaces for people to work, which I think is a positive (sorry if that’s a controversial statement! 😑).

Columbus: Population Trends
Wow at the Delaware Co growth. Also glad to see Franklin gaining pop again, after last year’s unusual dip in the estimate. Census: Franklin County, central Ohio again leading state in growth “Franklin County is growing again in population after a brief dip in 2021 - the only major metropolitan county in Ohio to see growth, according to the latest county census estimates released on Thursday. And most of the counties surrounding Franklin, home to Columbus and the state capital, are growing even faster. Franklin County's estimated 2022 population was 1,321,820. That's up from 2021, when it was estimated at 1,317,560, according to the census estimates. Five of the six counties surrounding Franklin County all continued to grow, census estimates show, with Delaware County's population the highest at 226,296. Delaware County saw the largest total growth of any county in Ohio with only Union County having a higher growth percentage over the past year.“ https://www.dispatch.com/story/news/local/2023/03/31/census-franklin-county-central-ohio-again-leading-state-in-growth/70063619007/

amped91 replied to CMH_Downtown's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionTbh, the plaque comment was somewhat of a joke, in reference to the United Way campus. I’m in favor of maintaining the facade if there’sa redevelopment, but my point is I’m not losing any sleep over over 171-91 either way. One sixty seven is what’s architecturally significant. And we have no idea what the developer is proposing, aside from some form of demo. Regardless, your comments are definitely in toxic territory, with the whole “all the plebes are distracted by something shiny, while I know the right way to do development” attitude.

Athens / Ohio University: Developments and News
amped91 replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionOhio University partners to spend $220 million on housing, mixed-use spaces at The Ridges “After years of debate and discussion, the historic Athens Lunatic Asylum could soon be reimagined into a $220 million mixed-use development project under a new plan proposed by Ohio University. Now known as The Ridges, a plan for the former mental health hospital would include spaces for housing, commercial, academic and recreational uses. The project has been in the works for a while, and a finished development could take up to a decade to complete. But when finished, it would be the largest non-student housing development in Athens' history with more than 700 units. Ohio University has two development partners for The Ridges project: Buckeye Hills Regional Council, a Marietta-based consortium of southeastern Ohio governments focused on economic development in Ohio's Appalachian region, and Community Building Partners, a program arm of Columbus-based nonprofit economic development consultants Praxia Partners.“ https://www.dispatch.com/story/news/education/2023/03/30/ohio-university-wants-to-spend-220-million-to-reimagine-the-ridges/69927041007/

amped91 replied to Summit Street's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionWork on Columbus' first Black history museum should start this summer “Work on the long-discussed museum and cultural center at the site of the Poindexter Village public housing complex on the Near East Side might begin this summer. So far, $3.9 million in state and city money has been raised to help fund the redevelopment of the two remaining Poindexter Village buildings. And on Saturday, April 29, a volunteer group will be hosting a fundraiser for the effort at the King Arts Complex, 835 Mount Vernon Ave. The museum would not only tell the the story of Poindexter Village — Columbus' first public housing complex and dedicated by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1940 — but would also be the city's first Black history museum. "This story connects a bigger Great Migration story," said Shelbi Toone, project manager for the Poindexter Village Museum and Cultural Center, referring to when millions of Black residents left the South in the early 20th century to find jobs in the industrial North, including Columbus.” https://www.dispatch.com/story/news/local/2023/03/30/work-on-columbus-first-black-history-museum-should-start-this-summer/70037036007/
