  1. Columbus City Council approves plan to quadruple downtown population “Columbus is booming, but city leaders say it's not growing fast enough. Monday, Columbus City Council unanimously approved a resolution to quadruple the downtown Columbus population by 2040. An update: Downtown nonprofit led by former mayor Coleman has deal to buy historic YMCA building “Columbus Downtown Development Corporation has reached an agreement to purchase the historic Downtown YMCA building, former Columbus Mayor Michael B. Coleman, the group's board president, told the City Council Monday evening. While not disclosing what the private, nonprofit development corporation plans to do with the aging structure, Coleman hinted that it would involve new affordable housing. "We got it done, right? CDDC has worked out a arrangement, a deal with YMCA to gain control over it," Coleman said during a presentation on the long-range plan for Downtown, saying a deal was agreed to on Friday. "It's a big deal, because what we know is that the YMCA (building) will be a place for affordable housing in our community, a very a important, a very tough building to redevelop.   4. OSU’s Center for Urban and Regional Analysis recently launched the website for their new Ghost Neighborhood of Columbus research project. This project attempts to digitally recreate the neighborhoods that were destroyed as a result of interstate and highway building. In their own words: ”CURA has launched the Ghost Neighborhood of Columbus project to help people understand what was destroyed by urban highway construction in the 20thcentury, and support research on reconstruction of the wealth, vitality and activities that have vanished. The Ghost Neighborhoods team includes CURA Director Harvey Miller, Associate Director Ningchuan Xiao, Outreach Coordinator Gerika Logan, geography PhD candidate Yue Lin, undergraduate history majors Eva Heyer and Michael Smith, and faculty affiliates Jason Reece (Knowlton School), Joshua Sadvari (OSU Libraries). The core data we are using to reconstruct these neighborhoods are Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps: these are hand-constructed maps of US cities dating back to the 19th century, created for fire insurance purposes, containing a wealth of building level data.” This will be an interesting project to follow. And while what’s been done is done, hopefully we might learn from our mistakes and not repeat ourselves.   8. Pretty standard looking suburban apartments, but 231 units is a pretty decent amount, and it’s nice to see more than just SFHs starting to spring up in this area. This is another proposal that will be considered at next month’s Dev Commission meeting:
  9. Nice! “Columbus Downtown Development Corp. will pay half of the cost to renovate the fountain and the city will pay the other half, said CDD President Amy Taylor. Upgrades will include work on the five miles of pipe under the fountain, adding lights that can be programmed with music, changing the crescent-shaped fountain head to sphere-shaped and creating separate areas for small children and children old enough to play independently. There will also be shade areas, additional seating and a space for food trucks and vendors to pull up closer to the fountain. The fountain design will go before Columbus City Council on Oct. 3 and, if it's approved, construction should start in the spring of 2023. Taylor said they hope the fountain will be finished at the end of 2023.   10. This whole neighborhood seems to be densifying quickly—this, the White Castle and Goodwill redevs, the Chambers Rd redev, etc. I’m all for it.

  12. Not a lot of details on it, but it looks like Preferred Living wants to build a 208-unit mixed-use project at 1010 W 5th Ave. Two ground floor retail spaces are proposed. There are currently a handful of single story structures on the site, so those would likely be demolished. It’s on the Dev Commission’s 10/13 agenda.

Metro Parks applying for grants to pay for new trails along Scioto River on South Side and at Highbanks “Columbus and Franklin County Metro Parks is applying for a total $12.4 million in grant funds to help extend trails south from Scioto Audubon Metro Parks and across the Olentangy River to connect the Olentangy Trail to Highbanks Metro Park. The Metro Parks board passed a resolution this past week to apply for $8.6 million for the Scioto trail extension and $3.8 million for the Highbanks extension from the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission (MORPC). Metro Parks wants to extend the Scioto Greenways Trail about 4.5 miles south to connect Scioto Audubon Metro Park to the city of Columbus' Heer Park on West Williams Road, and Metro Parks' 50.7-acre Great Southern park property that the district bought in October 2019 for about $1.1 million. The latter property is just northwest of the Interstate 270-South High Street (Route 23) interchange on the South Side. That project also would include a bridge over Route 104, for which the grant would pay, Moloney said. Metro Parks also wants to build about one mile of trail and three bridges on the Olentangy River Trail to connect the River Bluff Area of Highbanks Metro Park on the west of the Scioto River to the rest of the park east of the river. COHatch owner Matt Davis leading group behind proposed Riverview Village project in Dublin “Community Space Development LLC, led by COHatch CEO Matt Davis and 10 other partners, has proposed Riverview Village — a new development located on North Riverview Street behind the coworking chain's Dublin location. The idea is a response to the city's request for proposals on how to redevelop seven residential lots and two parcels it acquired for nearly $2 million in late 2021. An advisory committee that was formed to evaluate proposals has recommended Dublin City Council further consider CSD's project. Council members unanimously approved the recommendation to proceed at a meeting Monday, so the project will continue to be evaluated and negotiated in the coming months prior to potential development. Though the project hasn't received final approval, plans presented Monday give a taste ofwhat Riverview Village could bring to the area. CSD's vision is to create a walkable district focused on the arts, craftsmanship, business and commerce. It also aims to serve as the "missing link" connecting Historic Dublin to Riverside Crossing Park and Bridge Park, according to the proposal submitted to the city. The proposal specifies the existing properties along North Riverview Street would be renovated, and another seven buildings would be added along North Blacksmith Lane and North Riverview Street.   22. Yeah, trying to tie in the waterway and the park space with R5 is prob my favorite part of this project. They should really focus on that aspect of it. If this takes off, having this big entertainment/res/work node makes it that much more important to have multiple modes of transportation to get to and from. Hopefully S High can be made more pedestrian friendly too. The res portion seems like it fits right in Thrive’s wheelhouse, plus they’re one of the R5 founders, so I could see them being chosen to developed that aspect.
