  1. was going to make this exact same post. i worked at nasa glenn from late 90s through 00s in flight software. I'm sure it's much different now but back then there were some incredible engineers and scientists, but there was also a surprising number of people who were very comfortable with doing the bare minimum, bogged projects down, difficult to work with, and apparently "nothing could be done" due to civil servant protections. there's probably a fair amount of trimming that could be done if it was done in a thoughtful way without losing too much true talent. but that's a big if considering the current administration.
  2. dang I completely forgot about that. wow you just unlocked a flood of childhood memories.
  3. I'm way out of my depth here but that's never stopped me before. My rudimentary understanding is that there's been a wave of these "5-over-1" buildings because they're more cost effective. Does that also mean that their life expectancy is shorter?
  4. I really need to adopt his positivity and resilience when travel plans go awry.
  5. That sounds great. Happy for Lorain.
  6. Thank you very much really appreciate it.
  7. Hi -- My wife and I are thinking about buying a condominium (apartment style if that's the correct term). We've never purchased before. I really like the idea of living in a building but I'm concerned about HOA fees, specifically lack of control over them. It's probably an unreasonable fear, but I worry they can increase dramatically and would have little recourse. Same thing with potentially large problems with the building that would be a shared cost (an "assessment" I think it's called)? I'm sure there are other things I should be considering too. Obviously I have some learning to do. Does anyone have some good resources for educating myself on this stuff? I should probably try to find a realtor but to be honest I've interacted with a handful over the last year as we've started thinking about this and I couldn't shake the feeling that I wasn't getting the full story from them and didn't feel particularly comfortable just taking their word on things. Appreciate any help/thoughts. Apologies if there's a better thread for this
  8. I obviously have no idea what I'm talking about but as a lay person it's surprising to me that's it appears to be an all-or-nothing system. can't they start with fundamentals so with can start building and address the rest as they go?
  9. you would climb up it? sounds fun
  10. I wouldn't like it either, but as long as he isn't actively dangerous I would leave him alone. I just chalk this stuff up to party of life when living in a city. Perhaps skewed from living in California/Bay Area for several years before returning to Cleveland where tents routinely popped up on sidewalks in front of houses. Not saying this is objectively correct, just my opinion.
  11. I forget what's going in here, a small brewery?

I doubt these "trainings" actually do anything other than let the employer check a box and wash their hands of it.
  13. There's a fair amount of projects that overlap with DoD Also I assume one of the primary advantages with the HQ people for all agencies being located in DC is proximity to legislators/lobbyists/other agencies to develop connections/relationships, network, lobby, etc in efforts to preserve budgets, foster new ideas, and just allow for easier communication. imo the relationships developed over Zoom pale in comparison to those made in person. I would be ecstatic if nasa moved their HQ here but I think it would have detrimental effects on the organization as well. Which very well be the true rationale for them considering this for all the agencies. Clearly the administration actively trying to degrade the functionality of the government.
  14. Chains aren't all bad. Starbucks and Chipotle are just so mediocre and ubiquitous. I wish at least they could be some fun/more interesting chains (e.g. Daiso or fun clothing stores). Yeah it'll probably be fine, but I can guarantee part of Starbucks calculation is poaching customers from Edda and other coffee shops in the area. That's the way the world goes just wish the money was going to bolster clevelander businesses.
  15. Pedestrian death rates have increase by about 50% over the last decade. It is a very legitimate concern.
  16. I'm really disappointed that a local business isn't taking the spot. This area is just so special and unique for Cleveland. It feels like corporations are now starting to feed off the hard work by locals to build it up. That's capitalism I suppose.
  17. Walgreens is about to go the same path. Won't be shocked if they vanish.
  18. that's such an interesting weird little enclave that i periodically forget exists
  19. Not really news, but my friend told me a disturbing story of taking the rapid to a Cavs game last week. While waiting at the w150 station a person who was inebriated and/or experiencing mental health crisis stumbled and fell onto the tracks and was having trouble getting up. My friend pushed the emergency button, talked to someone and told them what was going on (he said they sounded skeptical/annoyed). Thankfully someone else showed up and the two of them together were able to coax the man off the tracks and back onto the platform. The train arrived after a few minutes. I would have thought the emergency call would have at a minimum paused traffic while the situation was evaluated.
  20. wow, interesting. where do you get that number from? would be very interested to compare different cities in the area. 60% seems really high to me but maybe it isn't?
  21. much appreciated! that list looks awesome. yes, hoping to find restaurant/jazz combo
  22. I'm glad dante continues to open places. I've lost count how many places he has now all told, 6 or 7? he's a really decent human from my interactions with him, wish him the best and continued success. the original is the only remaining "fine" dining in Tremont now right? still can't quite believe nighttown is no longer 😢 is there anything similar in the area that I'm not aware of? i haven't been to the bop stop in years and years, but i don't think it's what it used to be either.
  23. somebody should start producing sterile saline and related solutions. some ungodly percentage of the national supply is produced by a company in North Carolina that was knocked offline after hurricane helene leading to a protracted shortage. it's going to happen again, no doubt.

isn't everyone thinking about the next opportunity in some fashion
  25. I hope they do something about that unmarked ledge in front while they're at it. I have vision impairment and nearly took a header from it. the concrete blends together, especially on a sunny day, and it's difficult to see there's a step when you're walking south. saw an elderly woman do the same thing not not after.
