2 days in Cleveland - what to do?
Yeah that'd be cool.. And then you can walk on down to Sergio's for some caipirinha's and much off their special Tapas menu they have right now. And check out the PBL building on the way.

Cleveland-random venting
As a small business owner myself (and I mean REALLY small -- just me at the moment) I think I can say with some authority you've hit the nail on the head here. These guys are probably scared out of their minds opening up a new retail space in what some perceive as a shriveling area in its final death throes. I'd venture to guess they are only able to open here because of that perception (I assume rent is dirt cheap). You spend as little as possible until absolutely necessary so that if things go south quick, you cut your losses. Now if it's still there after 6 months I'll be singing another tune.

At the risk of getting berated by KJP again for not being negative enough on this thread :-D -- Yes, they're doing a lot of work. I just saw some workers today clearing out the vast, tremendously dirty space connected to the building on the west side. At first I was sad the flower shop went out of business on the first floor (although the few times I checked him out it wasn't exactly the best selection). But I think that'll be a great move if Rosie and Daryl move down to 1 (the Statler's stellar management team -- seriously no sarcasm). Also, Juji's restaurant in the lobby is actually staying open for dinner on Mondays and Wednesdays now. Now if only I could get a decent hair cut at Selah's. Wasn't 1010 Euclid bought a few months ago with the prospect of introducing more retail / living space? I have to say, there seems to be a considerable momentum building.. Oh, and I noticed today they've apparently scraped off the graffiti from the windows of the Loretta's Restaurant building. Small step, but nice nonetheless.

Cleveland: Case Western Reserve University News & Info
Straight from the horse's mouth -- After the marketing fiasco that led to Case Western Reserve University alumni snubbing the private institution, Case once again is asking everyone to refer to the university by its full name until revisions can be made. Crain's article here.

Cleveland-random venting
Huh.. I agree with blinker, I actually like the building. But yes it could use a major scrub and interior update. The one thing that has always thrown me about the CAC building -- why on the western face of the building is it alllllll brick then one minuscule window right smack in the middle. I'll include a picture later if I get a chance. It's hilarious. By the way I walked through Reserve Square for the first time today to vote.. I was amazed how much stuff is in there. The grocery store is not half bad, either.

Cleveland-random venting
Sigh, I guess so.. For a while I had given up any hope for the entire block with those horrendous generators outside the CAC due to the underground fire. (It's amazing how many fire trucks showed up to that, BTW.) But now that they're gone it, Loretta's is once again the "weakest link" in the neighborhood. Actually, a new store is preparing to open across the street. Looks like it might be a discount women's shoe store, though it's hard to tell exactly.

Downtown Cleveland Video Game Incubator
Here's another (older) press release about it, in case anyone is interested. http://www.case.edu/news/2005/8-05/virtual.htm I haven't seen it myself yet, but I've heard it's a really impressive lab they've put together. Prof Buchner was my adviser while I was at Case and it doesn't surprise me at all he's spearheading something new and cool like this.. He was very much a mad scientist, only with Legos Mindstorm Robots back then. Now if only they could figure out a way to turn down the burn-out rate of video game developers. I've heard first-hand horror stories of how grueling it can be since they live and die by deliver deadlines (just look at Sony -- the oft delayed PlayStation 3 might literally sink the entire company).

Cleveland: Biotech Business News & Info
Another one from Crain's. Not as big numbers as some of the others, but it's always a goof sign to see Phase 2 NIH funding. I've met with the Bioenterprise people and they're top notch folks. Grounded in reality and optimistic at the same time. I firmly believe they are responsible for a significant portion of the VC influx we've seen. That and the incredible talent / spinoffs from NASA GRC and CCF. http://www.crainscleveland.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20061025/FREE/61025008&SearchID=73261161970156 Cleveland Medical Devices gets big grant 2:56 pm, October 25, 2006 Cleveland Medical Devices Inc. has received an $896,000 grant from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke to further develop a home therapy and monitoring device for stroke patients. The Phase 2 research grant will enable Cleveland Medical Devices to advance the development of its “Untethered Home Therapy System,” according to a statement from the company. The device consists of a lightweight, wearable sleeve embedded with motion sensors and electrodes for measuring the electrical activity from muscle, according to the statement. The sleeve will connect to a command module that records data from the sleeve sensors and delivers functional electrical stimulation to weak or paralyzed upper extremity muscles during therapy.

Cleveland: Downtown: East 4th Street Developments
As long as cities in this state insist on frivolously suing companies like Sherwin-Williams, we're going to have a hard time convincing companies to move here (much less keep the few remaining HQs we have left). Talk about biting the hand that feeds you.

I know this old, but I nearly fell off my seat laughing -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kmYl_R5eb58 *EDIT: I see now there is an entire thread devoted to the Carl Monday Daily Show segment. Apologies, etc etc.. Move on, nothing to see here..

Dayton: General Business & Economic News
This will probably mostly be a WPAFB project.. NASA's funding for research projects in general have been slashed, PARTICULARLY in the aeronautics area (what's that first A in NASA stand for again?). They may use some of the supersonic wind tunnels at Glenn Research Center for testing and validation, but even those are under threat of getting mothballed in favor of computational models. And yeah, I admit it.. I can't wait for the Transformers movie to come out. I'm a dork.

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
I agree this has been an increasing problem. It appears Transit Police & CPD agree too, because it there's been an increase in their presence during the peak hours. Some days, anyway, it seems like there's an entire police brigade out there. Some days, not so much. However it's still a problem during off hours as well. Whatever happened to the truancy crackdown that happened late last school year? They were forcing parents to come pick up their children and possibily pay a fine if I remember correctly, and it had a CLEAR positive effect IMO.

Wow, Nov 25? That's fantastic. Although it reinforces the fact that I know less than nothing about the art of construction. Some seemingly simple things take a year, but then they can tear ass and slam a bowling alley into what was a decrepit old Wendy's in a couple months. Anyway, can't wait..

Best Ice Cream in Ohio
Graeters IS amazing..More like gelato than ice cream IMO (which I prefer). I had no idea they were Ohio based or so highly regarded. For gelato, La Gelateria on Cedar is the best.. Sometimes there's variability in his quality, but when he's on par his peach gelato is astoundingly tasty.

Cleveland-random venting
Oops, I must've been blinded by my venting rage that I somehow missed it! Great, now I can complain to my heart's content and not feel bad about it! *EDIT: BTW, anyone want a DJ Shadow ticket for tonight @ HOB for $20 (cost $32.50)? My friend bailed last minute, so I figure this is still on topic since I'm "venting" about it

Cleveland-random venting
I agree, the situation at TC is getting to be unbearable.. Not to mention the constricted sidewalks up and down Euclid. I'm an ex-smoker (once a smoker always a smoker), but even for me it's a bit much to have someone unleash the entire volume of their smoke filled lungs into my face as I try to squeeze between the orange barrels and masses of children hurling threats and challenges at each other in faux bravado, wondering if anyone brought daddy's gun to school today. Heh, maybe we should start a "Cleveland-random praising" thread to offset the bitching karma surplus here  Oh, and still no reply regarding my Loretta's Restaraunt letter. I mailed it via certified mail, and verified they have indeed received it. I found this article in the PD today interesting though -- Cleveland's chief of building and housing agreed with a consultant's report that the department is in shambles and told City Council on Tuesday that the city would demolish 220 of the city's most decrepit buildings as one of its first steps in rehabilitating the department. The demolition targets are dilapidated vacant structures, but many have never been cited by housing inspectors, often because inspectors hesitated to do the necessary, complicated paperwork, said director Edward Rybka. See the whole article here, it's kind of funny: http://www.cleveland.com/news/plaindealer/index.ssf?/base/cuyahoga/1160555627105360.xml&coll=2 Guess we shouldn't bet on any help from the city to enforce anything..

I considered cc'ing perhaps a couple people at the city, but I hadn't even considered the value of cc'ing neighboring bldg managers, DCP or county commisioners.. Those are all awesome suggestions, thank you! You know, honestly I don't expect anything to come of this letter, but I thought I'd give them a chance to clean up their act on their own first just in case. I figured I'd give them a month to respond, and if not then start cc'ing the world. That way we'll be able to reference the fact that we already tried engaging the building owners on our own, without so much as a response. Thanks again.

Haha, wow you're not kidding! Some sort of weird jedi mind fu going on there. I think your letter is great and you should definitely send it as well. I hope anyone else that's exposed to this little patch of filth on a regular basis. The more the merrier the way I see it.

I couldn't agree more. I live in the Statler Arms and am disgusted by this building on a daily basis. I don't really expect this to get anything done, but you've inspired me to actually get off my lazy butt and write a letter (truly a rare feat!). When I looked up Calabrese, Racek & Markos Inc on the Secretary of State's website it lists Steve A Calabrese as the Business Point of Contact, so that's who I'm addressing it to. If anyone's familiar with this company and can provide a better point of contact I'm all ears. Here's what I'm writing: Steven A. Calabrese CALABRESE, RACEK & MARKOS, INC. 1110 Euclid Avenue, Suite 300 Cleveland, OH 44115 (216) 696-5442 Dear Mr. Calabrese, I am writing you to express my concerns with regard to the property located at 1030 Euclid Avenue in Cleveland, Ohio. As Calabrese, Racek & Markos, Inc is listed as the property owner and you are listed as the business point of contact according to the Ohio Secretary of State’s website, I have addressed this letter to you. If that is incorrect, please accept my apologies. Otherwise, I hope you will indulge me with a few minutes of your time so that I may explain why this property concerns me. Specifically, I am speaking of Loretta’s Restaurant on the ground level the building. Let me preface my comments by telling you I live in the Statler Arms building almost directly across from this building, and walk by it almost every day. Undoubtedly this level of exposure has sensitized me to the subject, but I try to remain objective in all my points. First, as can be plainly seen in the blog post located at http://lccleveland.blogspot.com, the area behind the gate of Loretta’s Restaurant is extremely dirty. It is littered with garbage, pigeon feces, and (I suspect) human urine. I am not a medical professional, but it occurs to me that this may be a significant health hazard. Particularly when recent health scares such as Avian Influenza have brought to the forefront the dangers associated with animal feces. Of course, I am not suggesting anyone will catch bird flu because of the disrepair of Loretta’s Restaurant, but I think it is reasonable to be concerned that there may be some health hazard posed when animal feces are not periodically cleaned up or not sealed off by an impermeable barrier. Second, the general state of Euclid Avenue is quickly deteriorating. While this is somewhat due to the Euclid Corridor Project, it is also due to the spate of abandoned and unkempt buildings such as this one. I’m sure you are aware Cleveland has recently lost out on the opportunity to host the GOP convention in 2008. The rash of abandoned, unkempt buildings can’t help us win any future prospects. For these reasons and more, I implore you to please clean up this property. I am writing on the off chance that you simply are not aware of the situation and will quickly remedy the problems in the interest of being a responsible property owner / manager. Always open to better wording, within reason :-D *EDIT, fixed a couple typos

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
Thanks for the info urbanlife. The disturbances I mentioned certainly aren't run-for-the-hills-we're-all-gonna-die sort of things, but it's slightly more than I expected in the first 2 months of residency. So really, my interest has just been piqued to see what sort of police information is available, rather than a panicked call to arms. With that disclaimer in mind -- The things I've witnessed include two mob brawls of kids right outside the Statler. Now to be fair, it was during the day, and they really were just kids (I'm guessing 15 or 16 years old). However, before you laugh toooo hard let me re-emphasize it truly was an all out vicious brawl of 15 - 20 kids which spilled out onto Euclid, stopping traffic. While I wouldn't necessarily be scared out of my whits if this happened to occur while I was walking into my building, it would freak the bejezus out of my girlfriend. The other disturbance was a woman's blood curdling scream late at night. Now of course this might've been just some drunk people wandering around, which I expected and don't mind that much really when it happens, but it really had an edge to it that made my skin crawl a bit. Thanks KJP and bizbiz for your info as well. It seems like the CPD is rather restrictive in releasing their incident reports wholesale. I'm sort of conflicted on this -- in some ways I can understand. It seems like in cases of domestic abuse, rape, etc there certainly is an element of the victim's privacy to consider. On the other hand, one really has to consider the benefits of an informed populus as to the extent of problems. I guess I'll just try getting some reports on my own and see what sort of resistance there really is.
