The Dayton Scene...>Dayton Rocks! in the 1960s...
I was planning a trip to Toledo, so, just for kix, it might be interesting to make a side trip to check out that archive to see what the Razzberry was all about.

Milken Institute: Best Performing Cities 2005
Dayton scored fairly high in those high-tech location quotient ratings. Though Springfield ranks dead last in its category. God Bless The Greene! (I-675= Main Street of Metro Dayton)

Dayton: "Downtown's just fine."
That is the one thing that Dayton is still good about...places in town to hear live music...where its possible to walk from club to club to catch different bands and acts. If venues like Canal Street Tavern, Oregon Express, Gillys and so forth start to close down, well thats all she wrote for me for in-town Dayton (aside from the gay bars). In any case, Go Home was having their furniture sales in their Washtington Township store, while the Cannery store was more incidentals and housewares and acessories. Apparently modern furniture sells well here, as there is a furninture store in Wash Twp/Centerville that also sells modern..but its all made at the store by this immigrant guy from the Czech Republic (I think he was a refugee after the war)...his pieces is all based on Scandinavian/Danish modern...beautiful wood and simple upholstered things. Olmar. Functional without being cold. He also sells some import pieces, too. But there is still his furniture workshop in the back of the store. As for Ashley and Hillary, they are also in Centerville, though the article didn't say that. They have a store in what used to be a coffeeshop at the intersection of 725 and 48...I think they moved there this year. From the Canneryto this location.....in this building: ..at least they are making use of a historic old building again, though this time in Centerville not Dayton proper. @@@@ And here is downtown Daytons latest abandoned/vacant high rise...the Schwind Building, formerly the Moraine Apartments.

Songs about States, Cities, Places, etc.
yeah ive heard the Connie Smith song...she was from Marietta, I think. Heres another, from a band I liked a lot...Counting Crows.. Four Days All I want is something good It gets harder every time She is leaving here tonight Take a breath, take your time Spread your wings and rise Make a mark upon the wall Paint your face and pass the time Close your eyes and she ascends Hold your breath and ease your mind Forty thousand times Time fades into the night They descend and then they climb Feathers falling through the night Have you seen Ohio rise? It has been four days and nights All I want is something fine It gets harder every time She is sleeping far away Take your breath, take your time Spread your wings and rise Rise into the black Ohio skies They descend and then they climb Feathers falling through the night Have you seen Ohio rise? It has been four days and nights, nights

Dayton: "Downtown's just fine."
wow...and here i was planning to have dinner at Citilites before the opera on Saturday! Damn. Actually all this is not good. Go Home had a real presence at that corner, and actually was in the area for quite a while. As for the Embassy..that was one of the old school downtown places, like Arcade Seafood and the Century. They have been really screwed with that 'Schwind' deal. Not to mention Hutchins has pulled out more or less from that entertainment district.

this made the national media websites, and papers like the San Jose Mercury and Miami Herald picked up on the story.

The Dayton Scene...>Dayton Rocks! in the 1960s...
before my time, but it looks like the music scene was happening here even back then... it looks like WONE radio put out a compilation of local acts on the rock front.... (according to the "Acid Archive of Underground Sounds 1965-1982:..."....As with "Hillside '66" this has received wide attention from compilers, the top number on it being Jerry & the Others frantic "Don't you lie to me". Issued by the local WONE record station as part of a Battle Of The Band contest.") ..sort of neat cover art there....one can see the courthouse and the Gem City clocktower prominently displayed, which looks like an intentional riff on another famous tall clock from another "northern industrial town:.... ..yep, thats that pierhead building in Liverpool, which means The British Invasion... ...from a site on garage band of the 60s, an article on The Vondells. Of course the act of that era that had a real hit (not really from Dayton though, though they played here a lot) was..... It seemed that smaller cities all had their own scenes going on..and occasionally a local band would score a hit ...in Louisville it was The Monarchs with "Look Homeward Angel". Tom Hanks did a fictional look back on this era in local pop music with his movie "That Thing You Do", about a ficitonal band from Erie, PA. @@@@@ Later in the decade, as the counterculture kicked in, Dayton apparently had its own underground newspaper or newsletter...the Razzberry Street Sheet, copies of which are apparently in the BGSU library archives (of all places).

The Way Citizens Deal With Corruption and Civil Injustice
I think this riot probably is worth more study as it doesn't really fit with a lot of the other large civil disturbances of the 19th century, which where usually more "group" related. ...the various Know-Nothing riots, The NY Draft Riots, which was sort of a race riot, violence associated with labor-management strife, and so forth...and that it lasted longer and was much more violent than lynch mobs (though there are instances of lynch mobs turning into something else, like that Rosedale incident). One has to wonder. A percieved murderer let off the hook..leading not to a lynch mob but multiple days of rioting and 56 dead?

Its possible for a union to not actually strike when a contract expires...to keep working without a contract and continue to negotiate. It almost seems like AK is preparing for a lockout. I think that bitter labor thing at Mansfield was a lockout, not a strike..heres' an article on it: MANSFIELD: Lessons of a 3-year lockout at AK Steel plant No link for article.

Dayton and surrounding areas - why are there so many fires?
I recall that the Chicago TV news always had a lot of fires on it too. "If it bleeds it leads" is the journo catchphrase for this....or, in this case, if it burns. I agree with the firefighter, too on this. Bad wiring, faulty heaters, or just poor people trying to keep warm whatever way they can, without being able to afford gas or power. In fact I recall a case a few years ago where there was a fire and I think they were going to charge the mother with something (manslaugher?) as her kids died in it? Her gas or power was cut off and they where using some sort of open flame source or something to keep warm.

Ohio Weekend Getaways
I and my parnter usually do an extended weekend getaway in late fall. Last time it was to Marietta via Zanesville and Muskingum Valley. Nothing special to stay at (we stayed in a chain motel out in the "suburbs"), but lots of great old historical things to look at, including the Ohio River Museum. Side trip to Parkersburg, too. Actually there was a pretty good restaurant in an old building in downtown Marietta, right on the river. On the way back via Athens, we stopped at this place that served Mexican but was sort of a music venue (we stopped for lunch). @@@@@@ Since Dayton is pretty close to Columbus and Cincinnati day trips are fine to these places, but we used to spend the weekend in Cols for Commfest, usually staying at one of the Hiltons. We've also been to the Huntington/Ashland area for a weekend. Stayed in downtown Hutington in a modern high-rise hotel. Getting there is half the fun (we go by way of Chillicothe and Portsmouth and Ironton), and Huntignton is close enough for Charleston to be a side-trip. Thats not really an Ohio weekend getaway, though. Now that I think of it Toledo would be a good weekend getaway destination as it probably is only about 3 hour drive.

Uh oh...AK is thinking of using scabs to break a possible strike? I am sort of suprised that the Middletown Works has its own union, not part of the United Steelworkers.

I had some sort of shittake omlette, which was fair, a bit strange. Should have had the huevos rancheros as I like food a bit spicy.

Dayton: Restaurant News & Info
Well, maybe spinoff isn't the right word. The owner apparently had some sort of connection with the Winds (chef, partner, ?), so there is a connection of sorts..its not owned by the Winds, though. @@@@ They do have brunch I went there today for it....was pretty busy, the busiest I've seen the place. We went there around noon I think, and got a table, but there where folks waiting when we left.

i hate oh ???
I love that "Cleveland Junky" t-shirt. Im sure there could be a lot of fun with the "Queen City" moniker for Cincinnati. Dayton, The Gem City? what, a diamond zircon? (there was that Dayton as Hollywood gag postcard from the late 80s....someone did a good photomontage of a beach and ocean, downtown Dayton, and in the Hollywood hills, they put in a big "D A Y T O N" sign instead of the familiar Hollywood one. It was a real hoot!) And, there was that bumper sticker/promo from the late 70s/early 80s in Louisville..."I Luv Loahvuhl"....a pun on the local's 'difficult' prononciation of Louisville.

Dayton: Restaurant News & Info
And yes, we can claim The Winds, since Columbus claims Granville and Delaware restaurants in the Dispatch/Alive/The Other. Downtown has plenty of good food, including local favorites like Cold Beer & Cheeseburgers, Wympee's, and Flying Dog. Actually, though there is that wierd insular "I'm from Yellow Springs and your not" attitude Yellow Springs is pretty much part of the Dayton/Springfield metro area. There is now a Winds spinoff here in the south suburbs..Meadowlark, over near Borders & Half-Price Books. I guess, technically, Springfield can claim the Winds, too. @@@@@@ Good new downtown place is Citilights in the Shuster Center. Urban geeks will love it as they have these great night time pix of Urban Ohio skylines as part of the interior design. Very "uptown" downtown. (and a thanks to NOLAdy for that good review of El Meson..a reminder that I need to get back there for dinner again).

A brief history of the Flats
Wow, too bad! What a great story! So the city had little to do with this area becoming a hot nightlife attraction? About the closest I've been to an environment like this was, was in Frankfurt Am Main, in Sachensenhausen, the neighborhood just across ther river Main from downtown Frankfurt..there was a street called the Drosselgasse that was just packed with people at night walking from bar to bar, or actually, hard cider wine cellars....it was a lot of fun just to hang out with crowds of folks even if you wherent drinking.... @@@@ But its interesting that the lite rail system built a station there...perhaps too late or just missing the nightlife era in the flats.

Miamisburg / Springboro: Austin Landing
Yeah, the retail threat to the Dayton Mall area is coming from Greene County/Beavercreek/Sugarcreek Twp-Bellbrook. And there already is some retail going in south of the "Austin Center area, near where that new Dorothy Lane Market @ Settlers Walk is...that stretch of OH 721 into Springboro has a good chance of becoming a new retail strip...it looks like they are already doing site developement for something across from the DLM. But it also seems this is the kind of office/corporate development that would have, in an earlier era, went downtown. Also, does anyone know if this land use plan has been published anywhere, or is available to the public?

What is your favorite business district of Cincinnati's 52 neighborhoods?
I like that neighborhood by UC around Duttenhoffers. Maybe a bit too collegiate, but I like the gritty bohemian feel there. Hyde Park is nice as is Mnt Lookout. Hyde Park is a very nice upscale urban environment and is actually sort of special that way. I like Mnt Lookout as its a real healthy neighborhood shopping area. Ludlow in Clifton is pretty good...probably as close as Cincinnati gets to something like Bardstown Road in Louisville or Virginia Highlands in Atlanta. Northside is too grungy. I recall visiting that area around Crazy Ladys and it has some really dumpy abandoned storefronts. I guess up the street to the north (sort of around the 5th Amendment and north) is better.
