  1. I'm still trying to figure out what the green colored wall intends to be... the one that is running from the half-width of the building, perpendicular over towards Main. Are they possibly expecting to put an outdoor cafe seating area there?

    Oneida County, NY... both Utica and Rome have a county courthouse. Utica, NY Population 1930: ~100,000 Population 2010: ~60,000 Along the Mohawk River and the Erie Canal. ///// Rome, NY The other principal city in the Utica metro area. The business district has a theater and about two other structures left. Most of these buildings are in the nearby Gansevoort-Bellamy Historic District. Fort Stanwix is immediately adjacent to both areas.

  4. As of today, they look not too far from opening. The outside is almost ready, and there appears to be a lot of merchandise already on the shelves. I couldn't tell anything for certain though (as the automobile-parking lot is between the building and street), while I was looking towards it from the sidewalk.
  5. A few places along the Erie Canal, between Rochester and Buffalo… Brockport ~8,000 population. A tiny bridge over the canal leads into the main street. The cross streets on both sides of Main Street hasve a grid designed that doesn't line up with the other side. Supposedly the two founders didn't like each other so much that they wouldn't connect their roads. /////////////////// Albion ~6,000 population Orleans County seat. This village has the little bridge over the canal leading into the North Main-Bank Streets Historic District. The road continues up a small hill into the Courthouse Historic District, with several churches surrounding. /////////////////////////// Medina ~6,000 population The street clock was made in Cincinnati, and the Main Street District is on the NRHP. /////////////////////// Lockport ~21,000 population Named for the canal locks. Niagara County seat No historic commercial district, the buildings were scattered around, and industry has an overt precedent here. ////////////// …while within Niagara County, it makes sense make a quick stop by the United Office Building Niagara Falls, NY

  8. The house right above the "Downtown Leetonia in the distance" shot - did they cover up their door with those horizontal slats? Seems strange to me at least. The church at top looks real nice.

Lancaster, PA -Population ~59,000 metro ~500,000 -Known for the Pennsylvania Dutch area tourism -Very vibrant and urban downtown area…residential areas are too. -The center of the city is 'Penn Square', which originally was a square with the courthouse inside. Today there are two one-way streets that meet in an irregular shaped intersection with a monument in the middle, and one corner converted to a pedestrian plaza. Starting with the Lancaster County Courthouse: Griest Building (1925) Central Market is the oldest continuously operated farmers' market in the country Marriott at Penn Square(2009)…the tower part. 1878 for the Watt & Shand building that it was added on top of. The convention center is also connected behind.     Yes, it is a continuation of the 'taking steps backward' that it has been doing for decades, when regarding urban fabric and the interaction of humans with their cities. (edit to add- Not to say that I think automobiles should be completely disregarded, but designing for them is what is the poison.)

  18. Watertown, NY ~27,000 population -Jefferson County seat -Mostly centered around Public Square, which is a streched out rectangle with a park in the middle. Courthouse is off a block or so away. -Paddock Arcade(1850) is the country's oldest continuously operating enclosed mall - -Fun fact for the people that don't like grids: Watertown is the smallest city to have a park designed by Frederick Law Olmsted -Also home to the company that makes tree shaped air fresheners, and is possibly where the five-and-dime shop was invented (while Frank Woolworth lived in Watertown). Woolworth Building (1916 or 1921)…now vacant YMCA Building (1914) The Brighton (1903) New Courthouse: Old Courthouse: Built in 1850, there were two more floor above this, but they were removed in 1940.   20. Ellicott City, MD + Aurora, IL Near Baltimore, Ellicott City is the county seat of Howard County, but is not a city. It is the largest unincorporated county seat in the country, and has the oldest surviving railroad station in the United States. // Aurora is "A City Second to None". Second largest city in Illinois, and has a Mayan influenced building. The downtown area is on both sides of the Fox River, centered on the little Stolp Island. // //

Ithaca, NY -Tompkins County Seat Starting with a little bit of Cornell University and surrounding Collegetown neighborhood, then followed by downtown area which contains the pedestrian mall Ithaca Commons. (currently under renovation) Cortland, NY -Cortland County Seat. -Cultivar of apple is named for the county. -Historic 'Clock Tower' building burned down in 2006, was rebuilt in 2009
  22. A succinct, yet most veracious demonstration of Ohio from last century. Interesting enough, I believe the Madison County Courthouse design was a smaller replication of this building.
