Cleveland: Scranton Peninsula: Development and News
I had a similar reaction, but per the Crains piece, sounds like the GL folks are considering a multi use development, with housing and green space, not just an industrial brewing facility. Given the environmental and infrastructure challenges of building here, probably a good thing to have a someone with some juice taking the first step. I’d like to know if the Conway’s have seen what Stone Brewing has done with their main facility in Escondido. Its got nature trails, wetlands, outdoor bars with fireplaces and all sorts of carefully designed natural space to explore and enjoy. GLBC on Scranton could be all that and more.

Much of Cincinnati is still dirt cheap. You can get a great house for $125-150k and a livable one for much less in half of the metro . Some of the Cincy listings I’ve seen you and others post are so low it’s hard to believe.

I agree, but the trend in recent years has been eye-popping appreciation. Not 100% clear why. Ok here’s some on-topic anecdotes. A barista at the new Rising Star Coffee on Madison referred to the neighborhood just east of w117 as “Fakewood.” He found a house there that was “practically Lakewood” but much cheaper. I hope the name sticks. Was talking to one of the owners of LBM bar and asked him about his future plans. He said he was absolutely going to “Sam McNulty all of Birdtown.” That’s right, he used W.25 savior/gentrification villain Sam McNulty as a verb!

It is crazy to witness. A wonderful coffee shop/music venue in my SD hood just had to close. The owner was charitable, she took care of the homeless and all of the artists and musicians that worked there. But her landlord just tripled the rent..... I’d really hate to see this kind of thing happening in Ohio.

Yeah, in CLE you may have to move a short distance. I’m more sympathetic to displaced friends and neighbors in San Diego that literally have to move 50 east into the desert to buy a house.

Oh...that does narrow it down lol. I’m numb to the hospital debacle. I understand the complaints but am not interested in that dark area of local politics. I’m jaded enough. I’m much more interested in talking to new business owners and residents about why they chose to locate in Lakewood or Ohio in general.

There are many bright stories however. Numerous rental duplexes in Lakewood are being rebuilt as single family homes for sale. And the asking prices for them are quite high (like $400,000+). Two sides to that story, as it may qualify as a bubble and/or gentrification worth worrying about. The latter issue has already been raised by local leadership and may become a flashpoint going forward. I’m not aware of any anti-gentrification movement in Lakewood. Am I wrong in this? Definitely though in Detroit Shoreway and OC however.

Columbus: Downtown: Convention Center / North Market Area Developments and News
surfohio replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & Construction^ Haha! I followed a Delorean on my way to work today. Unlike the CC it was definitely one cool design from the 80’s.

surfohio replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionIt was the late ‘80s. If you read articles from the time, developers were breathless about suburban sprawl and doom and gloom about Downtown. Building an ugly suburban mall on High was their big idea for helping the urban core. Different times for sure. Right. I think since the center was the result of a design competition they should just hold another competition to better integrate it with the street.

I can already imagine that building opening up to a rooftop patio over Harry Buffalo.

surfohio replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionI’ve been a convention center hater from day one. It just seems so stupid to go through all that time, effort and expense with the cap only to have pedestrians arrive at a dead zone along the CC. Bad, thoughtless design.

Great to hear about Shaker. And Toledo! Has Cleveland Heights had the same Momentum? Even where I bought in the low rent district of Lakewood has suddenly come around. Here’s a new build. https://www.howardhanna.com/Property/Detail/2111-Robin-St-Lakewood-OH-44107/NorthernOH/3875785

Average year of construction of a home in Lakewood is 1938. The city is trying to change by encouraging new housing construction wherever there's a vacant or underutilized lot. Have to have that to maintain the competitiveness of its housing stock and to maintain its population base and average income levels. Unfortunately, both are falling. That's interesting because home prices and rents have been going up like crazy. With the population growth being stagnant, I gotta ask what’s the ceiling on Lakewood’s housing prices?

I believe this is spot on. Change is happening, best to be an active participant rather than a passive spectator.

Well, it sounds like they spent pocket change on the plan, so not surprising if that’s true about inaccuracies. The comment section is brutal.

Hyperloop
Yeah why not just only build the rail system and save a few dozen billion dollars and get all of the passengers you would have otherwise. That may be a silver lining, that this is the inevitable conclusion once we see the numbers. I’m getting a lot of texts and emails about the loop from people who normally have no interest in transit. So at least this thing is showing there are desired solutions beyond simply building more lanes of highway.

I doubt that Akron does, either. On these sorts of forums I see Clevelanders cling to Akron in a way Cincinnatians never do with Dayton. Downtown Dayton is only 10 miles further from DT Cincinnati than Akron is from Cleveland. Nobody in Cincinnati cares about Dayton, and vice-verse. Lived in Akron for 10 years and Cleveland for 15. There is a very small contingent of Akronians who shun Cleveland, likely because of affinity for the Pittsburgh Steelers. But While Akron has its own identity it’s clearly existing under the umbrella of Its bigger brother.

^ agree. Those long stretches without cross streets just encourages faster traffic. Like that nearby stretch of Superior between E12 and 17 it’s essentially a highway.

No doubt. St. Ignatius and CVCA are consistently 2 of the top soccer programs in the nation. Don’t forget about University of Akron. They are among the elite college programs.
