Ohio Intercity Rail (3C+D Line, etc)
^ Would love to see The University of Akron and Kent State connected by rail. It just makes so much sense for the schools to pool their resources and work closer together.

Ohio Public Corruption
Good question.... Phenomenally corrupt or insanely incompetent? What is Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine’s deal? DAVID DEWITT JUNE 21, 2024 No matter how I slice it on the role of Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine in the biggest public corruption scandal in Ohio history, I’m forced to conclude he is either knee-deep in the corruption, or he is so wildly incompetent he let it all happen right under his nose without suspecting a thing. To catch you up, former Ohio House Speaker Larry Householder has been sentenced to 20 years in federal prison for felony racketeering as a result of his role accepting $60 million worth of bribes from FirstEnergy funneled through multiple dark money groups to win election for himself and allies, install himself as speaker, and pass a $1.3 billion bailout called House Bill 6 for FirstEnergy’s nuclear power plants and a pair of Ohio Valley Electric Corporation coal plants, one of which is in Indiana. The legislation also gutted Ohio’s renewable energy portfolio. Former Ohio Republican Party chair Matt Borges has been sentenced to five years in prison for his efforts to thwart a citizen repeal of the legislation. One lobbyist also charged by U.S. Attorneys later died by suicide. Two other former FirstEnergy lobbyists pleaded guilty, cooperated, and are awaiting sentencing. One of the dark money groups called Generation Now admitted guilt in the scheme. https://ohiocapitaljournal.com/2024/06/21/phenomenally-corrupt-or-insanely-incompetent-what-is-ohio-gov-mike-dewines-deal/

You are correct in that, but that doesn't make the situation any less preposterous. What sort of logic is there for a financially struggling city to be footing the bill for a $142 billion dollar entity?

Walkable Communities
Business owners are buying into a bogus myth about driving by David Zipper Jun 11, 2024, 4:30 AM PDT Facing a barrage of criticism following her 11th-hour turn against congestion pricing in Manhattan, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul held a hastily planned press conference last Friday evening — not a time when politicians tend to spotlight issues they’re glad to talk about. Trying to justify her about-face, she invoked Manhattan merchants fearful that congestion pricing would cripple them by deterring suburban patrons unwilling to pay a $15 weekday toll on vehicles entering Manhattan south of 60th Street. Small business owners are “deathly afraid that they’ll lose their customers who may come in from places like New Jersey,” she said, mentioning Comfort Diner, Townhouse Diner, and Pershing Square, whose owner is apparently “very happy” with her decision to slam the brakes on congestion pricing. Answering a question from the press, she added, “I encourage you to go to the next diner with me … watch the people come over and thank me.” Hochul’s claims drew eyerolls from those wondering how many people were using a car to reach diners in the densest, most transit-rich county in the country — particularly Pershing Square, which is across the street from Grand Central Station. Transportation outlet Streetsblog accused the governor of “plutocratic populism” — deferring to the preferences of the affluent over the public interest — while a Gothamist reporter who visited all three of the restaurants spoke with one owner who vehemently denied ever discussing congestion pricing with her. https://www.vox.com/future-perfect/354672/hochul-congestion-pricing-manhattan-diners-cars-transit

Some more bid info on reddit today: The preliminary bid deadline for the NWSL's 16th team was last Friday, this article details who is reportedly in and out (note, none of these are confirmed by any official source, so keep that in mind). Also note, this does not mean the NWSL has evaluated or made any judgement on any bids, just that these groups are likely or not likely to submit bids. The NWSL has previously said they will not expand into areas where reproductive rights are under threat, so take that into consideration when looking at the bids: Reported to be bidding: Cincinnati, Cleveland, Minneapolis/St. Paul (Minnesota Aurora) Maybe bidding: Atlanta, Denver, Jacksonville, Nashville Not bidding: St. Louis https://www.sportsbusinessjournal.com/Articles/2024/06/11/nwsl-expansion Cleveland: Cleveland Professional Soccer, which has already been awarded an MLS Next Pro team, confirmed it has submitted a bid to bring an NWSL franchise to Northeast Ohio. CPS co-founder & CEO Michael Murphy declined to comment on the composition of the potential ownership group and whether they had secured a lead investor. The bid calls for the construction of a new $150M stadium as part of a $283M public-private partnership. The group has committed $193M, or 68% of the funding, and is seeking $90M in public money. While the lack of certainty around the facility is a challenge, Murphy touted the fact that the NWSL club would be the top priority. “That's the opportunity that we're going to bring to the league, that the stadium is built primarily and purposefully for the NWSL,” Murphy said.

Ohio Marijuana News
Ohio needs to learn from other states how NOT to regulate marijuana. See: California, where greed and corruption moved the regs and taxes to "extortion-level" amounts. They basically knocked all the small mom & pop operations off the map, and for consumers the market was actually better when the dispensaries were operating illegally. California's pot economy is crashing. What comes next? By Lester Black, June 11, 2024 Vince Ning has a singular perspective on California’s weed industry. He’s the CEO and co-founder of Nabis, the state’s largest pot distribution company, which interacts with every single pot retailer in the state. When Ning looks out across California’s legal weed industry, he sees a market in long, drawn-out freefall. “It’s like a wave crashing in slow motion,” Ning recently told SFGATE. “People thought the big crash was going to happen in 2022, and there was certainly a crash, but things continued to get worse in 2023. And we are still in 2024, and things aren’t looking that much better.” The latest data confirms Ning’s point of view, with signs of economic trouble nearly everywhere you look: Overall sales have been falling for the past two years. The number of legal cannabis growers and brands has decreased by more than 70% since legalization first went into effect, according to the Mercury News. A recent report found that pot companies owe the state more than $730 million in back taxes, money that California likely will never see as most of those companies have already folded. https://www.sfgate.com/cannabis/article/california-cannabis-economy-crash-19492956.php

Cleveland: Downtown: Huntington Bank Field
Health and Wellness my man. It's a no brainer especially when the resources are shared. That's the key, a good mix of private and public amenities. Think: athletic fields, open community space, medical & training care, residential, walking trails, restoration of natural areas...all ingredients for a vibrant new district. What we really don't need is another Flats East Bank style bar & restaurant district.

Cleveland: Downtown: Huntington Bank Field
This would be preferable to Berea and it could especially be attractive with a public component, just like the Cavs facility is creating in coordination with the Cleveland Clinic. Health and wellness is the wave of the future, and a district catered on those principles is a perfect template for a shared Lakefront. Unfortunately it seems Berea is already taking up all of those training facilities.

Cleveland: Lakefront Development and News
So you're saying there's a chance 🙂 Thanks for the article. Some very very interesting variables to add to the equation, all of course bookended by uncertainty of the Killer B's: Browns and Burke. If Burke goes away does anyone think the plan calls for some some additional building height? I did really like how the Haslam plan used taller buildings to help bridge that downtown-lakefront gap.

It's not your fault by any means, but this process has been going on for 30+ years. If people here want to be optimistic that's great. But what I am seeing is the City and County leadership appears to be getting blindsided in all this.

Funny you should say, but in "Back to the Beach" (1987) the premise was that Annette and Frankie got married and moved away from the beach - to Cleveland. It's actually a really fun B-movie full of great cameos.

Cleveland: Downtown Office Buildings Updates
I can personally attest to this. The only reason I'm in CLE right now is because my company gave the work from home-hybrid option after Covid. It's a best of both worlds scenario for me. I wouldn't even be in Ohio otherwise, as my office is in California. And right now my desk there is probably covered with interoffice mail that I don't even want to think about haha.

Cleveland: Downtown Office Buildings Updates
Well think of it this way. When there's more residential downtown that should (finally?) trigger the need and justification for more retail, medical, services, etc. Then there's more jobs downtown and still tons of space near east side for future growth. It's an evolution.

FWIW I was eavesdropping on three contractors for some large company, I couldn't figure it out which one, other than they also work on or have worked on Progressive Field. But they made it sound like this soccer stadium was already a done deal.

Speaking of w3, I've yet to see any rendering where that street looks like anything but an elevated car-centric access road.
