Cleveland Area TOD Discussion
I can't remember if it was simply a mistake in the renderings or what exactly, but original plans for the W117 residential looked as if they would be tearing down the mixed use buildings on Madison. Very glad that didn't happen. Hopefully the positive development continues in the adjacent empty lot along W117. p.s. Regarding nature of Madison....I'm betting there was a time in Lakewood when the plan was to suburbanize the whole town, one strip mall at a time.

Driverless Cars
A strange look into AI Solve trolley problem scenarios with MIT’s Moral Machine posted by Jason Kottke A group at MIT built an app called the Moral Machine, “a platform for gathering a human perspective on moral decisions made by machine intelligence, such as self-driving cars”. They want to see how humans solve trolley problem scenarios. We show you moral dilemmas, where a driverless car must choose the lesser of two evils, such as killing two passengers or five pedestrians. As an outside observer, you judge which outcome you think is more acceptable. You can then see how your responses compare with those of other people. http://kottke.org/16/10/solve-trolley-problem-scenarios-with-mits-moral-machine

Cleveland City Council
Going to need a curfew for sure. Going to have to monitor constantly for drug/gang activity if Cleveland bikers do the same "activities" as they do in DC/Balt. This facility will likely become a focal point between the police and bikeriders unless someone can govern the facility from the inside. Hoping it will work but I have a feeling this is another bad idea from a city government with a long history of making wrong choices. I think it would be great. I grew up riding dirt bikes and would love to get one but the closest place to legitimately ride (that I know of) is Lake County. If it was well done I think you'd see a lot of young people coming from the inner and outer suburbs to use it. I ride bikes too and I hope it works. The problem is these bikes aren't just being used for riding around, they're also being used for other activities. Is this going to be a park for everyone or is at an attempt to recreate the Midnight Basketball program that was used to keep young adults off of the streets and out of gangs during the crack epidemic a few decades back. If it's the latter, it needs to managed well or it could become a problem. Is the city operating this? In DC they've taken the somewhat opposite route of Cleveland where the Police Chief has an active enforcement program to try to get most of them off the streets. It will be interesting to see which approach works better. I think this is a good idea overall. But not if the park devolves into some kind of lawless Mad Max scenario. So I agree with you guys, there has to be oversight to ensure that it's a safe environment. Still I'm optimistic. Yes the bike culture is ingrained with drug sales. It's not unlike the outlaw origins of NASCAR in that regard. And motocross is a big sport and has all kinds of sponsorship opportunities; if done the right way it's another sport that can channel kids toward healthy competition and a better future. Who knows, maybe this place affords the police further opportunity to interact with neighborhood kids in a positive, meaningful way.

Ha! I knew what the premise was before I watched this show but I watched it anyhow.

I'm hoping they go off in a different direction with focus on side or all new characters. Like True Detective, but not done in a terrible way like True Detective.

I'm planning on watching Westworld. Looks intriguing. Also I binged "The Night Of" and was not disappointed. Very well done show. Hoping for a season 2 announcement soon.

Cleveland Browns Discussion
Ha! I made that same nascar analogy to a friend last night. There were two NFL teams that decided to end their games improbably with three consecutive turnovers. And I had the misfortune of watching both of them.

Tiny Houses
Interesting article. Not all motivations are the result of saving money, as we see here within Portland's limited growth boundaries. http://www.nytimes.com/2016/10/06/style/portland-affordable-housing-solutions-tiny-homes.html?_r=0

Well that would be great. Do you think they could construct in a way that wouldn't literally "throw shade" at the existing townhomes?

E-Check
You wouldn't notice this as much now with most expressways being blacktopped. They (automakers) have come a way since, & never understood the logic when they were still checking the fuel inlets for modifications long after leaded gas had been off the market.... Then again it took our politicans several decades to figure out that steel license plates rust out & become unreadable when exposed to corrosive road chemicals. :| One thing I note in the winter here is the salt/chemical brine on everything & in the air, I challange Senator Fedor to look into this, no wonder we have a higher rate of heart disease here. I've never considered that specific health issue. But I'd love to see an honest cost/benefit analysis to using road salt. The consequences from using it must cost billions.

Paterson, New Jersey
My friends family lived in Patterson. His dad often told the story of how he was attacked by some guy in broad daylight and ended up biting the guys ear off. The Shore area of NJ is filled with "up north" refugees that fled places like Patterson, Newark, Jersey City, East Orange, etc. etc.

The Clinic is obviously wanting to tear down this building because it's good urban design that brings life to the street and promotes walkability. Sadly, it's their M.O.

Cleveland Browns Discussion
Lots of ups and downs yesterday. Like you I'm mostly optimistic for the future. And especially looking forward to see Gordon back on the field. The defense isn't the steel curtain by any means, long long way to go there. But every game they're giving the effort.

Cleveland: Restaurant News & Info
The Bevy of Birdtown is closed. I remember talking with the owners last year when they first opened. This was a dream for them. Unfortunately their background was in building restoration, and not operating a restaurant/concert venue. From early on it would be frustrating because they were never consistent about their hours of operation; you would show up and the door was locked. Some days they wouldn't open at all. When I mentioned this to the "manager" she said she would have to find their "web guy" to update their correct hours on their Facebook page. You really don't need an IT expert for this. Anyhow, sorry to see it close. My friends and I had some fun times there - when they were open. And sad to see people put so much investment into a place, when in the end it's just not enough to work out.
