  1. Don't forget C. State prison or D. college dorm!
  2. Yeah i don't know why either. It could be the window-to-wall ratio harkens back to historic buildings built with much better materials. But this is a new building, so the smaller windows just look institutional or cheap? It kind of reminds me of a college dorm.
  3. Right? Though I seem to remember the Sainatos pizza guy was also pretty angry about the park going in. I suppose they just wanted to preserve the forlorn and ghostly character of the area haha.
  4. I haven't really been around NEO much, especially since Covid. But hasn't traffic on I-480 always been significantly worse than I-90? In the past I-480 has always been a personal "avoid at all costs" zone during rush hours. I'm really curious about how the influx of 100k people would affect traffic, especially since I remember way back when how even mid-level IX center events just paralyzed the area.
  5. ^ Great pic!!! I wonder if Hooples is still mad about the Towpath haha.
  6. Remember FWIW there's already a transit hub planned for the lakefront.
  7. There are pros and cons all around, so I don't think the issue is quite as simple as "sprawl." There's just frankly far too many variable we don't have answers to. Another big question that's painfully unclear is whether moving the stadium helps or hurts the Lakefront Plan.
  8. * FWIW I listened to Baskin & Phelps today and not a single person (aside from Baskin and Phelps) was supportive. You know how people like to criticize architecture ;-)
  9. It could be simple greed of course. Or it's because he knows he won't be able to recoup the costs for building the stadium. In other words it is a bad investment for him to take on.
  10. MLS will never expand enough though to capture all of the soccer starved cities in America. There is history in plenty of places like Rochester, Cleveland, Sacramento, Tampa, etc. etc. who are left out of the MLS equation. But I wholly agree with you the USL needs to get out of the USSF ranking and go outside the box, so to speak. I want to see USL get some crazy billionaire ownership groups operate in a league without a salary cap. It's not unthinkable that a New York Cosmos or some other eccentric outsider could buy a world class team.
  11. I'm skeptical MLS would ever seriously entertain the idea of relegation. Those ownership groups just shell out way too much money to play in a second level. I would also argue the best thing for US soccer would be for USL to remain separate from and compete as much as possible with MLS.
  12. Potential rivalry on the horizon? USL W League welcomes Pittsburgh as expansion team for 2025 TAMPA, Fla. - The United Soccer League today announced that the Pittsburgh Riverhounds ownership group has established a USL W League team which is slated to start competing in the 2025 season. The team’s official crest and identity will be unveiled in the coming months. The addition of a W League team will provide a pathway for women in Pittsburgh to compete at an elite level. The Riverhounds Development Academy has been active since 2007, with its first girls’ academy team forming in 2012. “As we experience the remarkable growth of women’s soccer globally, it’s imperative that we not only acknowledge, but actively champion the immense talent and passion that exists within our own communities,” said Jeff Garner, Pittsburgh Riverhounds President. “By establishing a pathway for girls in our region to pursue the highest levels of soccer, particularly those emerging from our esteemed Riverhounds Development Academy, we are not just creating opportunities, we are fulfilling dreams.” The year the Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC is celebrating its 25th anniversary, after being established in 1999 as a men’s professional team in the then USL A League. Following the formation of the Development Academy, the club expanded, now fielding teams from U-9 to U-19 age groups within multiple leagues, including USL Academy. https://www.uslwleague.com/news_article/show/1308277
  13. I'm not an expert on conventions but I do know there's a big differential between contiguous and not-contiguous space. Otherwise the IX Center would never be more suitable for events. Also I don't recall anyone ever suggesting a covered Lakefront stadium would compete with the CC, but would be an extension of it. As for economic impact I'm more in the doubting side of how beneficial stadiums are for the economy. Then again I think we all are wanting to see an unbiased, third party cost-benefit analysis that's directly tied into the scenario in Cleveland and all of its own unique variables. It's actually crazy this has not happened with so much public money potentially at stake, unless of course the powers that be already know the answers and don't want to publicize them.
  14. Two things: 1. we do have our stadium but it needs massive amount of investment and 2. our convention center cannot host larger events that end up at the IX Center. The calculus is different of course, but I'd argue it's not drastically so.
  15. THE best view of the city is from the Lakefront. Prove me wrong!!!!!
  16. ^ Nice! These types of places are seeds planted for the benefit of the entire community. And the inspiration gained from the Lakewood Screw Factory, W78th and Ingenuity building is notable. I was recently at Ingenuity for a music event, it's a great looking space and a desperate sign of life for the area. **I'm absolutely convinced Ingenuity could should have been courted to locate in those Warehouses near Browns Stadium as a cornerstone of much more organic Lakefront Plan. Another missed opportunity, but I digress.
  17. This downtown San Diego stadium + convention center economic study was commissioned by the team (biased) and the convention market for SD and CLE are a lot different, but anyhow FWIW: The Study's Conclusion The economic impact study concluded that "the total permanent effect of the convadium is the combination of the impact of the Chargers' operations in San Diego and the impact of the Convention Center expansion. Employment impact is an increase of more than 6,400 jobs, of which more than 4,200 are direct and 2,200 are indirect and induced. The combined direct expenditures of more than $300 million will have a total estimated impact of nearly $400 million on regional output, $176 million on labor income, and $246 million on value added." Carol Kim, Director of Community Impact for the San Diego County Building and Construction Trades Council, applauded the findings of the economic study. "The convadium will result in thousands of new good-paying jobs for San Diegans, plus new apprenticeship training opportunities for community members to 'earn while they learn,' receive full family medical coverage, retirement benefits, and enter into a life-long middle-class career without college debt. This is a clear boost to our economy and a benefit for our communities," said Kim. https://www.chargers.com/news/economic-impact-study-on-convadium-reveals-wide-array-of-economic-benefit-138986

Yes! I've witnessed this, seeing some building in Canada from Edgewater Park. I'm certain this is the type of thing that led to sailors seeing "ghost ships" and the like.
  19. ^ any ideas what's with those windowless walls bordering the pocket parks? That's a bad look.
  20. I like what I'm seeing in the design plan.
  21. There is a lot of original musical talent in NEO. There are still good shows all the time! One issue I see is that the print media that once shouldered all the publicity for the music scene has not been replaced.
  22. ^ So this is basically all about the Browns stadium after all.
  23. GLBC and great natural habitat restoration don’t need to be mutually exclusive. Just google Stone Brewing in Escondido to see what’s possible! It’s the beer garden for the 21st century
  24. We could easily remedy any space for better street interaction. With the Rock Hall, great local artists, so many famous residents and a really amazing history of science and innovation there is a deep well for inspiration.
  25. Absolutely! And I gotta say I'm positively shocked the former owner guy wearing a tracksuit couldn't get the place back to the glory years ;-)
