Aaron Goldhammer just mentioned making a highlight reel to commemorate his time as a Brown. "Like that one time he caught a pass....and that other time he was inactive." Gallows humor.

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
Jane Campbell was probably the worst example. She grew up in Shaker, where it was planned that every resident resides within a half mile (usually much less) of a Rapid station. As mayor, Jane (and Hunter Morrison) moved to just inside Cleveland at the Shaker-Cleveland border. It would have been a snap for her to have walked 1 block to the Drexmore station and ride the straight shot through the Waterfront Line to the E. 9th station which sits behind Jane's City Hall office. Not only would it have been convenient for Jane, but it could have been a huge lead-by-example moment for local transit, in general, and the (still struggling) Waterfront Line, in particular. Don't forget her husband drove all over God's green earth on the public's dime. I suppose he wasn't wealthy enough for his own car.

Maybe the idea is to give each of those 50,000 a bag and some gloves and they'll clean up Cleveland's trash.

OMG. No. No. A few years ago I proposed a mock award for worst architect in Ohio (The "Brady Award" named in dishonor of fictional t.v. architect Mike Brady). I now propose an award for horrendously bad taste. And right now I've got to say it's a toss up between Mr. Geiss for the stunningly bad Screaming EAgle concept and Mr. Gilbert for this laughably bad "Jack" campaign.

Cleveland Planning Commission
It makes sense because it lays the groundwork for makes the neighborhood a much more welcoming, functional, safe and livable place. Commerce is the engine of our economy. Blank walls and dead zones in the WD and anywhere do not foster anything positive. They're planning mistakes that should by no means be continued. There's long and short term fixes that can be applied asap and without much initial cost; a little bit of will power and a little bit of investment is all. We want a lively city with more activity. It's what separates a lively place from a forlorn grey concrete wasteland. Retail districting is the easy answer. The city can and should do more to help foster entrepreneurial spirit. Providing cheap places for commerce is seed planting. Here's the concept, better stated: “We want to encourage the development of small scale permanent retailing in Pearl and Lynn Alleys,” he stated. “There are very few places in Downtown where one can create clusters of starter spaces for retail. The improvements will help encourage development of the alley system. It’s designed to draw people through.” Read more: http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,419.1225.html#ixzz423x27hf5

I didn't say we don't need more retail. I did say that we'd be acting stupidly to spend a lot of money to convert spaces that are poorly suited to retail while actual retail space go empty. If someone wants to build new actual retail space, then have at. But "poorly suited for retail" means what exactly? There's an alleyway in downtown Columbus that's getting retail. Yet there are no existing storefronts. Why is that? It's a concerted effort to bring life into a lifeless area. It requires more than someone wanting to do it. It needs to be something the city is behind.

Lakewood is safer and has lower than average crime in virtually every statistical category. And props to the Lakewood police. I'll just leave it at that.

Cleveland: Zoning Discussion
Cross posted with I Love CLE thread... Just saw this from local musician Brent Kirby, who is quite an excellent performer by the way. Cleveland friends - if you've ever enjoyed (or hope to enjoy!) live music at The Harp, please consider signing this petition. There has been some questions and confusion on why the Harp is having to apply for the variance for music. Here are some more in depth details. The Harp has had live music for as many years as it has been open, and has been a foothold in that community years before it was cool to be. It must be said also that Cleveland's live music ordinances date back to the days of player pianos and such, and if someone wants to make trouble for an establishment that has live music, any venue in town is fair game. Three years ago, a small group of people (assisted by He Who Must Not Be Named) in Ohio City decided they didn't like music at the Harp and made moves to have it eliminated. The Harp applied for a variance and along with the majority of the community and it's organizations, including key councilmen, convinced the city zoning that the value of music at the Harp was worth keeping, and the variance WAS GRANTED. That didn't satisfy the small group of people, and they appealed. Since then, it has gone all the way up to the Ohio Supreme Court who then pushed it back down to the Cleveland City zoning to make a decision, which happens on March 18th. The Harp has done nothing wrong, and has continued to be a positive force in the community, despite the harassment they have been taking over the last 3-4 YEARS. Not to mention the cost of legal bills. If you want to fight the good fight at the local level, this is a good one to get behind. I encourage you to sign the petition, write a letter, show up on the day of the hearing at City Hall. Three years ago, I was there for that hearing, and there were too many people to fit in the room. Please support the Harp!!! http://www.thepetitionsite.com/694/316/106/save-live-music-at-the-harp/ Read more: http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,4179.2380.html#ixzz41zHBxraC

Lakewood. The "western half is better" adage is overly simplistic and not truly helpful in my humble opinion. Some of the streets adjacent to W.117 look a little worn. But there are lots of great streets and houses east of Warren I can assure you.

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
Completely and utterly amazing. This is one of those magic articles that conjures up every human emotion imaginable for the reader....it's funny, it's terrifying but it's mostly sad. This sentence is my favorite: In a blistering dissent, Judge Timothy McCormack blasted the arbitrator's decision as "a stagnant pool of rancid, stenchful waste." #JudicialEndorsementsMatter. Ugh. You all are completely wrong on this one. Both the common pleas court's and the court of appeals' decisions were correct and the rationale of McCormack's dissent is contrary to law. If one of the other appellate judges had joined with him, the Ohio Supreme Court would have almost certainly reversed that ruling. The DECISION to return this cop to work was rendered by the arbitrator in a FINAL and BINDING arbitration. Arbitration is a form of alternative dispute resolution, which is highly encouraged in our legal system. It is not intended to be an exhibition game. You don't get to "appeal" an arbitration decision. What you can do is file an application to vacate the decision. To grant such an application, which is exceedingly rare, the judges can't simply determine that they would've reached a different result. The arbitrator could even misapply the law and, in Ohio, the courts can't vacate the decision. Only when the arbitrator is found to have clearly exceeded his authority under the contract can the courts vacate the decision. So knock the arbitrator and his decision all you want. But don't pretend that these judges were allowed to conduct a de novo review of the decision and supplant it with one of their own. If that were the case, people would never agree to arbitrate disputes and the court dockets would be even more crowded than they are now. Why am I wrong? All I gave was my opinion on how reading the story made me feel.

Cleveland: Recommend Mexican Restaurant on west side similar to MiPueblo
My bad, I got carried away lol. Oh, if you're looking for some amazing Mex, try La Plaza supermarket. It's casual cafe seating inside, and sometimes they have a taco cart out front. Not a restaurant setting, but so good I have to mention it.

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
Since you're already a transit user, you might not be the best person to ask this of, but HOW, exactly, should that marketing be "upgraded", or "approached differently"? I'd be curious to hear specifics. There's lots of good, super creative filmmakers in town. You should hold a contest where filmmakers create a 30 second piece on how convenient it is to use RTA and how to use the fare machines. Anything to get non-riders more familiar with the process will help. Trust me. These short clips will be all over Youtube and Facebook in no time.

The loss of Mi Pueblo was a big one. However, it's gotten me to search out some hidden spots. Check out these reviews! http://www.yelp.com/biz/pupuseria-la-bendicion-cleveland There was another place right by this one, but I'm not finding it for some reason. [edit] Name change. Here it is: http://www.yelp.com/biz/miramar-cleveland Also I've had great experiences at Rincon Criollo in Gordon Square. And for something a little different try Barroco, though it's a little pricey.
