Ohio Smoking Ban
Do you have any statistics to back that statement up? I'm peripherally in the business. A lot of places have closed, revenue is down for everyone. A lot more places used to stay open until 2:30, now that's just on the weekends. Some of it is the economy, but by no means all. Not saying you're not right, but I have never heard anyone even remotely suggest they weren't going out to a bar or restaurant because of lack of access to a smoking area. On the contrary, I know countless others who would avoid bars that were smoke dens with low ceilings and no ventilation.

Governor John Kasich
Really? How do you think the media attention would harm him? He's been a national media figure for fifteen years and doesn't seem to act with the beligerance he does with the state/local media. If anything, his record as governor is almost devoid of anything bold or noteworthy enough to hurt him as a Presidential candidate. He's more suited to VP. And I mean, if Joe Biden can survive media scrutiny as VP then anyone can.

Governor John Kasich
Good call. His uncharacteristic mention of "the Lord" in his acceptance speech was very calculated. He knew that soundbyte would get airplay nationally. Thing is, I still don't buy that Kasich is really that popular in Ohio. In the unlikely scenario he is the nominee in 2016 I could see him lose the state of Ohio.

Cleveland Browns Discussion
Right. They not only should've beaten Baltimore, they should have won by two TD's. The season has been marked by such inconsistency. It's almost as if the players conserve their energy and focus to certain parts of the game.

^ Two more live music venues? I'd be very surprised if they could gain any foothold at all.

Cleveland: Downtown: Euclid & 9th Tower / Schofield Building Redevelopment
Can someone explain how it's cheaper to brick over the windows vs. keeping them as decorative coverings over the cinderblock?

Cleveland: Downtown: Euclid & 9th Tower / Schofield Building Redevelopment
Other way around. They're covering those windows. They first added the cement block and now they're covering the cement block with brick. Ouch. I'm actually surprised you're allowed to do this.

^ There's something that's just so rewarding about seeing bricked-over windows reclaimed. Thanks for posting.

Ohio Voting / Voter ID Law
Interesting, Ohio-centric article. Even Without Voter ID Laws, Minority Voters Face More Hurdles to Casting Ballots Heavily black and Latino precincts often have long lines and fewer voting machines on Election Day. Why? By Stephanie Mencimer Over the past decade, Republican legislators have pushed a number of measures critics say are blatant attempts to suppress minority voting, including voter ID requirements, shortened early voting periods, and limits on same-day voter registration. But minority voters are often disenfranchised in another, more subtle way: polling places without enough voting machines or poll workers. These polling places tend to have long lines to vote. Long lines force people to eventually give up and go home, depressing voter turnout. And that happens regularly all across the country in precincts with lots of minority voters, even without voter ID or other voting restrictions in place. Nationally, African Americans waited about twice as long to vote in the 2012 election as white people (23 minutes on average versus 12 minutes); Hispanics waited 19 minutes. White people who live in neighborhoods whose residents are less than 5 percent minority had the shortest of all wait times, just 7 minutes. These averages obscure some of the unusually long lines in some areas. In South Carolina's Richland County, which is 48 percent black and is home to 14 percent of the state's African American registered voters, some people waited more than five hours to cast their ballots. http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2014/10/minority-voters-election-long-lines-id

2014 Gubernatorial Election
I'm half expecting FitzGerald to grow a reflective, Al Gore type beard and take some time off to reconsider his direction in life. Worst. Candidacy. Ever.

Me too. But the Bucs wanted too much in return. I doubt the Browns were willing to part with more than a third-rounder. I heard the Bucs wanted a second-rounder for the 31 year old. Hmm....I woulda done it. Just imagining the AFC North trying to defend Gordon/Jackson/Cameron would be really something.- Cleveland Browns Discussion
Letdown. I've been hoping the Browns would pick up Vincent Jackson.- Cleveland-Lakewood: Enhance Clifton Transit Project
My theory, drivers are just naturally shying away from the construction, which is currently in the median. I recall last month when the curbs were being done that many cars would avoid the adjacent lanes even when they were open, even opting to stay in the gridlocked inside lanes.- Panhandling/Scamming stories
^ Not everyone is real happy about Ocean Beach being homeless central.- Panhandling/Scamming stories
Where I live in San Diego (Ocean Beach) there are a lot of homeless of all stripes who sleep on benches, sidewalks and the beach. Every night when the shops close there are many people sleeping all along the main street. Even so, it is very rare to get panhandled there. Instead many of them will clean up trash for some type of compensation from store owners and residents. Some play music or do chalk art on the sidewalks. Or you'll sometimes see passive requests for money, or pot or beer with an upside down hat. There is this one old woman who dangles a cup on the end of a fishing pole....it's very cute. I can not resist giving her money. - Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
