  1. I'll argue that the cap has worked so well that it highlights just how much of a dead zone the Convention Center is.
  2. Whoever did their logo did a great job. The t-shirts came out very cool.
  3. My friends on Robin mentioned that they'd love to open a bakery there. That would work well with your coffee shop! And now that bela dubby is transforming into Taco Tonto, there's certainly room for a coffee-centric hangout. It's nice to imagine the neighborhood going the Tremont route, getting back to their mixed use roots. Maybe not so much bar oriented; perhaps "Tremont-lite" is a better sell. I suspect there would be some opposition re: scarcity of parking, worries of noise, etc. But believe me, I'd support a re-zoning initiative in a heartbeat. It would make the hood so much more interesting.
  4. Good suggestion re: the easement. That would work out great. Madison is such a wide street that the road itself is the dominant visual feature, and imho it's poor condition is a primary reason why the stretch looks ugly. Not sure if you're aware of this: http://www.lovelakewood.com/blog/2010/12/29/design-team-offers-suggestions-to-improve-appearance-of-east-end-of-madison-ave/ http://www.onelakewood.com/pdf/BirdtownActionPlan.pdf
  5. Was gonna say, I biked through this am and was glad to see them!
  6. The Cleveland Tango and Bowling Marathon! Lakewood, September 7 – 9 2012 http://clevelandtangomarathon.com/ The Cleveland Tango and Bowling Marathon is an all inclusive event for dancers and non dancers. Located at MAHALLS 20 Lanes 13200 Madison Avenue in Lakewood Ohio I intend for this event to have many purposes First of all I want to bring something back home. I love Cleveland for many reasons and although I can not live there any more I do wish to return and bring back all the things and people whom I have met and befriended outside of Cleveland. I want to create an event that allows EVERYONE to participate in some way. Tango is not only about being the best dancer. It allows us the opportunity to be better people for ourselves and those around us. It gives us a sense of social responsibility and awareness of who we are in respect to those around us. The affect we have on others and how we can make that affect more positive. I want to bring my friends together and bridge the gaps in communities. Especially in small tango communities where the gaps are HUGE and pointless because everyone is fighting about nothing that has anything to do with the what I believe to be the purpose of this dance.

Start along the water over by Pier 23/27. Walk up Filbert St. to Telegraph Hill. Up there you'll see Coit Tower (and along the way, the parrots!) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telegraph_Hill,_San_Francisco Oh, and the kinda spooky penny arcade museum at Fisherman's Wharf. It's free: http://museemecaniquesf.com/

Again, I'm not saying he's not without fault.
  9. Truly does look like a place with a lot of secrets. Tons of character. I'm always in awe when I see an older city that's well kept and still intact like this.

An old guy just called 92.3 and said that Art Modell was just one of many business owners that dysfunctional politicians ran out of town. I don't think it's entirely accurate but the politics of the city is at least as guilty as Art was over the whole situation.
  11. Well, that post was sadly accurate.
  12. Mariott, Westin, Motel 6...it's all the same ha ha. http://www.marousbrothers.com/WIP/Westin_Cleveland_lg.htm
  13. Guys it sounds to me like the Westin project is starting up again soon. Yay!

Lake Superior is spectacular. Thanks for posting!
  15. Beautiful shots, I would have thought that was way out west some place. Same with Lake Champlain... I would've guessed that was in Utah.
  16. Oh, sorry I misunderstood your point. But yeah, I fully support your cup method and will gladly support any ODOT methods to initiate it where feasible.
  17. Sounds like a beautiful concept.
  18. Steves Lunch is ground zero of the burgeoning HDD. I was there after midnight. Slaw dog was as fine as ever. Though the sign was down, so accidentally drove past it at first.
  19. Case and point. http://www.theatlanticcities.com/commute/2012/08/case-separated-bike-lanes/3015/ The other day, Doug Gordon decided to try a little bike lane experiment. Gordon, author of the Brooklyn Spoke blog, placed red plastic Solo cups (yes, the ones you use when drinking from a keg) along the edge of a painted bike lane that is often blocked by parked livery cars and other drivers. The conditions were hardly scientific, but these small plastic delineators, stuck to the roadway with duct tape, seemed to be pretty effective in preventing vehicles from entering the bike lane. Funny story, enlightening, but not really the same. A bike lane is it's own lane. A sharrow, on the other hand, is merely the painting of a bicycle logo in a shared lane for bicycles and auto traffic.
  20. ^ Intriguing. I wonder if it's possible to install windows in the arches of the bridge. Could provide further protection from the weather and make it more suitable for retail inside. I'd love to be able to swoop by on the bike and grab a coffee, etc. Wouldn't it be cool if this lower deck was the western gateway into Tower City?
  21. ^ That's great progress. Hopefully this momentum can continue further west on Detroit asap. Point of contention: Several cyclists asked about the dicey drive over the Detroit-Superior bridge for east-bound cyclists who don't want to swing over to the path. Neither a striped shoulder nor a raised sidewalk on the bridge's south side afford a comfortable route for cyclists, who have to deal with traffic in a hurry to get downtown. Cross said the city is considering a bike lane and sharrows on the bridge's south side. I'm afraid these sharrows will give cyclists a false sense of security. You are risking your life on the south side of the bridge, and imho a painted bicycle logo isn't anything nearly enough to guarantee safety. I implore anyone who considers taking the bridge to use the north side raised sidewalk.
  22. Hmm, anything to anticipate in world photos thread? Welcome back! Looking forward to Ingenuity on the lakefront this year.
  23. Birdtown market garden grows with addition of vacant lot on Robin Street In addition to being serious urban farmers, Annabel Khouri and Eric Stoffer, above, are also committed Birdtown homeowners. They bought the house next to their Lark Street plot after it fell into foreclosure. The Local Food Movement is growing in Birdtown. Three years after transforming a vacant Lark Street parcel into an urban market garden, the husband-and-wife team of Eric Stoffer and Annabel Khouri are expanding to another area of the neighborhood. The Bay Branch Farm owners last week acquired the land at 2107 Robin Street from the city for $3,000. The property was stripped of its house in 2010 when the city razed it not long after buying it for $24,000 from Fannie Mae following a foreclosure. http://www.lovelakewood.com/blog/2012/08/24/birdtown-market-garden-grows-with-addition-of-vacant-lot-on-robin-street/
