Cleveland: Detroit-Shoreway / Gordon Square Arts District: Development News
Again, when you can demonstrate a precedent for GOOD NEW construction that's actually happening on Detroit Ave, I will jump on your "tear it down" bandwagon. I'll simply point out that every freaking new building on Detroit sucks. Really sucks. But all of a sudden people "see the light" for good urban design and are going to construct a new place with fantastic materials? Our conversation is history repeating itself. You want to tear down the Giant Eagle on Clifton. You argue how amazing a new development COULD be at that intersection. Rendering comes out and just like I predicted, it is nothing close to your vision; rather it's another stupid CVS...it sucks. I'm not arguing that you don't have a good vision for what could be.

The City Grill bldg is cool. That windowless fortress though, not so much. What exactly is cool about the City Grill bldg? It's outdated 2 story, empty storefront & crappy apartment above? So if a storefront is empty, you tear it down? There is absolutely NO precedent for new construction that fits in well. Why the heck would anyone take the chance of a suburban CVS type building there? Especially when there are holes to fill elsewhere in the vicinity. The City Grill building is in character with the rest of the street. It's not crappy. My friends were in serious process to buy the place. People failed that transaction, not the structure. The building itself is a perfectly good candidate to continue the neighborhood turnaround.

Neither. Cleveland. Every city should be unique. Agree with you 100 percent. I'm speaking in the context of what works and what doesn't when designing a more accessible waterfront. That was my point, not that I want Cleveland to copycat anyone else.

THanks for your insights on the neighborhood. And welcome to the forum.

For reference I just wanted to echo these sentiments. The Geis plan is indeed horrible. We need much better for our waterfront. The above illustration plan from Mayor Jackson is much more appropriate. Do we want to emulate San Francisco, or Oakland?

Heck yeah. I can picture some wetland re-development and boardwalk trails too. There could be Fed money in conservation efforts. In some ways I think being a bit disconnected from downtown could actually work out as an advantage. You've got the gorgeous views of the water and the city, but it's really a world away; it's a tranquil place, almost rural even. edit: I'm including land north of the runways in my assessment...obviously it's not "tranquil" right next to the shoreway.

The value of authenticity should be celebrated imho. But ironic look? Wearing silly trucker hats, wife beater, uncomfortably tight jeans etc, that I don't get, but then again I kinda do... seems every subculture evolves a "uniform" where people just start looking/dressing a certain way to identify with like-minded others. It makes it fun, because we can laugh at stereotypes! ie hippies, yuppies, ghetto pants, punk rockers, goth kids, rednecks, etc. etc.

Cleveland Guardians Discussion
Right! It's grating on me. And I'm one of the few fans out there willing to cut Dolan and Co. some slack. Well, I try not to overthink the situation and enjoy baseball for what it is...but these front office clowns are making it just about impossible. I'm sick of this. Sell the damn team already.

Cleveland: Downtown: The Avenue District
I was thinking that this space could really liven up the hood. Not sure what would work there, but I'm so glad they are once again moving forward with this project. So much potential there with new residents in the mix. Right now, this part of town scares my co-workers because it's desolate after 5pm.

Anyone know if that Mike-Brady-designed apartment bldg can be painted or something? Cause if it can be, I'd be more than willing to pitch in.

I just heard the interview of Nick Antonnetti (sp?) on WKNR today. Man, that guy got on my nerves in a hurry. To me the Dolans, ShapIro and this guy come across as soooo condescending. I'm paraphrasing here.... Rizzo: is anyone on the team untradeable? NA: No. Rizzo: so even Jason Kipnis could be traded? NA: Well, is Jason Kipmis the best player in major league baseball? Me: What kind of answer is that?! We can't even AFFORD the best player in mlb so whatever your intent, why even answer that way? The Indians are a PR disaster.

Akron: Random Development and News
As usual, I disagree with the decision makers. Manna said he did not entertain the thought of reusing the circular building, which is the neighbor of his law firm, Brennan, Manna & Diamond. He has said for years he would look forward to tearing it down. “To be completely frank, I didn’t like it. It has not stood the test of time. It clearly was from the ’70s and looked like a spaceship,” Manna said Wednesday. “I see absolutely no architectural significance to that building other than it’s just round.

On a positive note, that certainly is a structure that can be removed pretty easily in the future.

US Economy: News & Discussion
Perhaps, but I think that many members have more cynical and self-serving reasons for wanting more political control over the central bank. Ron Paul may be the exception, but for better or worse, he usually is. This piece roughly sums up my view on the topic: http://www.nationalreview.com/articles/312592/beware-audit-fed-noah-glyn The Fed is a creature of statute, and Congress has both the authority to audit it and the responsibility to oversee it. A fiscal audit of the Fed is not in itself objectionable — the problem is having Congress insert itself into the Fed’s internal monetary-policy deliberations, which are for very good reason insulated from the political process. This is not a question of the Fed’s fiscal probity: The Government Accountability Office (GAO) already audits the Fed’s financial statements. What Paul and his House colleagues are seeking is for the comptroller general to audit the Fed and then return a “detailed description” of its operations to Congress, along with “recommendations for legislative or administrative action.” This would undermine the monetary-policy independence that is the Fed’s main reason for existence. In congressional testimony, Fed chairman Ben Bernanke described the effect of the bill: “What the Audit the Fed bill would do would be to eliminate the exemption for monetary-policy deliberations and decisions from the GAO audit. So, in effect, what it would do is allow Congress, for example, to ask the GAO to audit a decision taken by the Fed about interest rates.” Bernanke is correct when he argues that this would “create a political influence . . . on the Federal Reserve’s policy decisions.” Just read the article, thanks for posting. Some very good points made imho. But I found the comments section equally interesting. There were 18 total comments and every single one was critical of Glyn's reasoning. Human nature being what it is, I still think the FED is not been free of political persuasion and history shows this to be true. Avoiding embarrassment and ridicule is a heavy factor in their fears of transparency.
