  1. ^ I don't understand, what was wrong with their front entrance? Those front steps in your first pic look architecturally appropriate, really nice. The "improvements" in the drawing actually look kind of dangerous.

Really though, under a future scenario where such technology is reliable, is it any different than letting your child take the bus, subway or taxi by themselves?

I'm a frequent visitor. I've never posted there, but over the past two years I've come across an incredible amount of interesting information there. Now, that's not to say there isn't a plethora of stupidity also, but overall it's a wealth of knowledge. Especially when there is turmoil overseas, you get people right in the middle of a war zone posting to reddit!
  5. IIRC, there was a proposal to tear the place down for new residential.
  6. I looked up "facadectomy." Yes...that!
  7. So You Want My Job: Restaurant Owner by Brett & Kate McKay on July 19, 2012 Once again we return to our So You Want My Job series, in which we interview men who are employed in desirable jobs and ask them about the reality of their work and for advice on how men can live their dream. Last month we got a look inside the life of a restaurant critic. This month we hear from the guy the critic critiques: the restaurant owner. Dan Deagan is the owner of not only a rockin’ beard but also a tasty gastropub in Ohio. Today he gives us the lowdown on his stressful but satisfying job. 1. Tell us a little about yourself (Where are you from? How old are you? Describe your job and how long you’ve been at it, etc.). My name is Dan Deagan. I’m 38 years old. I grew up in Poland, Ohio (suburb of Youngstown). I currently reside in Rocky River, Ohio (suburb of Cleveland). I am the owner of Deagan’s Kitchen & Bar, a gastropub located in Lakewood, Ohio. I’ve been in the bar/restaurant business for 22 years, working at basically every position in the industry, including line cook, bartender, server, manager, and now owner. 2. Why did you want to become a restaurant owner? When did you know it was what you wanted to do? I had no intentions of staying in the business. I always planned on getting a “real job,” and bartending/serving was just to pay for school and bills. It was a fun job and I realized that I was actually pretty good at it. I got into management and decided that I was tired of making other people money. I wanted to do it for myself. I opened my first bar in 2002 (Dive Bar in downtown Cleveland). It’s still open and doing well, but I started becoming more interested in food. I wanted a place that my wife and I like hanging out in: independently-owned, casual atmosphere, great craft beer list, and fine dining quality food. We opened Deagan’s Kitchen & Bar in September 2010 and have been very lucky to get great reviews and success. read the rest: http://artofmanliness.com/2012/07/19/so-you-want-my-job-restaurant-owner/

I wonder how Jim Haslam III feels about Lakefront Development?
  10. Boarding schools could be an amazing benefit to these kids.
  11. That was a momentum game for sure. Now is the time for the owner to win over the fans on the fence with a big acquisition.
  12. I think the closing of Phoenix Coffee was a bellwether event.
  13. We're still in this thing!! With Soriano in this lineup, we are sooo much better. Come on Shapiro/Antonetti, lets make this happen [clap clap clap].

    Damn!!!!
  15. I think the recent discussion on how to develop has been enlightening. I think a poll on the subject would be interesting, as people are surprising me with some of their responses. Anyhow, I'm curious about one thing. Midtown is right in between the downtown of a major American city and one of the most prestigious hospitals in the world. Is it really that crazy to demand a certain level of design for current projects? At the very least Euclid Ave should have elevated criteria, if it doesn't already.

Tony Grossi reporting on WKNR that Randy Lerner is in discussions to sell the team to Jimmy Haslam III.
  17. There are several cities, even in the U.S., that require surface paving in parking lots or driveways to be cobblestone. That's actually standard almost everywhere in Europe. I'd love to see a cost benefit analysis of using better looking materials. So much of our cities are asphalt, and so much of that asphalt looks terrible. Where I live, near Madison in Lakewood, I'd say that poor looking asphalt is the dominant physical feature. Anyhow, if a section of downtown deserves some street improvements, it's the WHD.
  18. I'm not sure I agree with abolishing the FED. But no matter what or if the Senate ever votes on this one bill, questionable actions taken by the FED (and economic collapse elsewhere) are putting them under increased scrutiny. This makes sense to me. It's from John Mauldin's blog: Massive central bank involvement in the markets risks returning us to a de facto centrally planned economy. Those S&P 500 companies all have the same chairman; it is Ben Bernanke because his policies are affecting everybody. That is what makes money management so difficult. Correlations will ebb and flow; they always do. But what makes them go away? This will only happen when governments and central banks go away. But if they go away, then does that not mean things get ugly? Maybe they do get ugly, but it also means that we sort out the excesses in the market. We reward the people that do the right thing and we punish the people that do the wrong thing. And we have an adjustment process that may be ugly, but then we have a period of long expansion. See rest, and alarming looking graphs here: http://www.ritholtz.com/blog/2012/01/living-in-a-qe-world/
  19. That "mandate" language is grandstanding and you know it's basically meaningless. It's just fun to use when it's something you agree with. Yes Federal Reserve Bank, please keep "helping" the economy....right off the cliff.
  20. Okay, if we want to talk "mandates from the people" you should be in favor of allowing the Senate put the bill up for a vote.

The more I think of it, if the rate of technological advance is any indicator, the costs to implement such a system could be available at somewhat low cost.
  22. I prefer this kind of "paving" for WHD.

I agree this could spell all kinds of trouble for mass transit. However, if a system employing driverless cars saves lives, it's worth the pursuit at any cost.
  24. ^ I dare you to walk right up to Geneva on the Lake and call it tacky....to it's face!
  25. Those were convincing points ha ha. I imagine you got them from your recent tea party or militia meeting no doubt. I'm sure the FED was created to be free from pressure. But human nature being what it is, and the FED being as powerful as it is, there should indeed be the highest level of scrutiny applied to their decisions. You have stated numerous that government serves the role to advance our interests; that government solutions to problems are necessary or often preferable to private solutions. Well so be it. Political pressure, whether that's good or bad in someones opinion, comes with the territory. I don't see it as negatively as you do ie "mob rule." I see it as a flawed system with flawed results. The best we can given the circumstances, is provide more access, more insight into what the hell they are actually doing.
