Cleveland: Innerbelt News
I was having a few beers out in Lakewood on Tuesday. Heard the guys next to me speaking contractor language. Turns out they're hired by ODOT doing work on the bridge. Very interesting to hear about the green bulkhead ideas they're studying to help out with providing better habitat to fish. Anyhow, I told them that I know several people who are afraid to drive over the current bridge. They gave me their scientific explanation, basically how RUST is actually holding a lot of the bridge together. Yep. Scary!

Cleveland: Restaurant News & Info
This is great news. I love Fat Fish Blue and hope Twisted Kilt goes to Strongsville. I'll always remember talking up Robert Lockwood there. The place is a Cleveland institution. I'll stop by later today 4 sure.

I've only been to Hooters less than a handful of times in my life and the place always felt dirty. Tilted Kilt not so much in my opinion. I'd bet you've been to Hooters "more than a handful" of times Clevelander17. Hey-oh!

Cleveland: TV / Film Industry News
The shows producer, Carter Bays, is from Shaker. The actor who plays Ted is Josh Radnor. Josh is from Columbus and went to Kenyon College. He was my next-door neighbor during freshman year. He's a fun, good guy. His dad might be from Cleveland originally. uote author=3231 link=topic=3329.msg588043#msg588043 date=1321629914] The actor who plays Ted is Josh Radnor. Cleveland: Demolition Watch
A friend and I were on the way to the happy dog late that night when that fire broke out. We were really worried it was W. 78th. So we parked by Reddstone and managed to walk pretty close to the fire. There were embers flying all over the place, even across the shoreway! It's a lucky thing that the wind was straight out of the south, or else we'd be talking a lot more damage. ^^ Strap that brewery looks pretty cool.

We need more positive articles like this one. I'm a big fan of Ronayne. If you ever get the chance, the guy is super congenial, and loves to talk about CLE.

Cleveland: Random Quick Questions
There's a great documentary about the clean up the Cuyahoga that's been airing on PBS stations around the country on and off for the past couple years (at least) that shows this boat in action. The thing is awesome. Haven't seen that...yet. I'll look for it. The Flats could/should be a living, breathing interpretive resource for the history and future of the Clean Water Act.

Cleveland / Lakewood: The Edge Developments
Thanks for posting KJP. Most interesting...the gallery they did looks nice. The rooftop on Twist looks okay, but the smoking area in the back is awful, though I'm not sure they're responsible for that. The Bang and Clatter theatre facade is absolutely terrible, however, and now we know who to blame for that. Anyhow, is anyone buoyed with confidence over the involvement of this company? Gottaplan does the awesome rendition still justify the demo of the current buildings?

Cleveland/Oberlin - Possible Relocation?
True, but it's not like Lakewood is your typical suburb that lacks culture. It's diverse and has a lot to offer imho. Plus, Lakewood has less crime and much better public services like police and snow removal. And values new Mcdonalds over saving historical buildings! That, is a sore spot.

Exactly. Likewise, the most stunning architecture of the Chicago World's Fair was actually made of straw. Still, I'm with Freethink. It would be amazing to still have that vision of pride and grandeur restored at the bridge. Plus it's nice to see how it was so scaled to pedestrians. I'd be all for new construction that celebrated that amazing history of the Great Lakes Exhibition.

That building with the windows is Samsel Supply. Check this great history: http://www.samselsupply.com/history.html Samsel Supply was a “Green Company” ahead of its time. Frank and his company were recognized for the clean up of ecologically damaging spills in inland lakes and rivers. Samsel played a major role in the clean up of the Cuyahoga River. Today, Samsel is partnering with Cuyahoga County, taking a proactive role in the Greenspace Initiative Program. It is a program that is helping return fish habitats to the Cuyahoga River. It is our way of continuing the efforts to restore the safe green environment of waterways. Get this: Frank Samsel became a contractor cleaning up oil from the Cuyahoga. He designed a 56-foot boat that could suck up flammable liquids and pick up debris, and he named it—“Putzfrau.” That’s German for cleaning lady.“It did pretty much what we designed it do to do,” Samsel said. “The boat was built to work for about 20-years; and it was out of work in about seven.” I don't know about you, but I want to see that boat on a pedestal- prominently displayed- when I visit the Flats.

Cleveland / Lakewood: The Edge Developments
^ Gottaplan if YOU were the developer I'd be excited. Architecturally, I think the peaked roof at the former Giant Eagle is very unique and worth preserving. I would bet anyone on this board (limit 3 people) one local draft beer that any new construction will have lesser street/sidewalk presence than the current setup. Sad truth, it would be better for that place to remain a vacant lot/surface parking vs. throwing up what could be an Arby's or a Speedway. Also, any ltruly arge development there that crowds in the crowds in the church too much will hurt it's chances imho.

Cleveland / Lakewood: The Edge Developments
Financial markets remain tight today, so reducing the cost of redeveloping the site by providing a clean property that is ready for construction would likely increase interest by new site users, Brindza said. What the hell, they're treating this property like a superfund site?!!?! The existing buildings look fine. What are the chances that new construction will fit the existing character of the street? I'm not optimistic about this at all.

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
R&R you were at McNamara's Public House. It's a favorite among the boating crowd at Edgewater Marina. I've always been fascinated by bars that don't do any form of advertising. Anyhow, I'm with you. I'm not going to stay at a place that's filled with cigarette smoke. There have been, in fact, murders at the Edgewater Deli next door: http://realneo.us/back-to-cleveland-killing Not to be too much of a cynic...but is there a good neighborhood in Cleveland that doesn't border a bad one?

Lancaster, PA - more than a Bird in Hand
Met friends there for a regional micro brewery tour. I was overwhelmed by the density and the architecture. It's very charming. It's such a great thing that they were able to preserve so much of the history.

W 25th should be treated just like High St. in the Short North. Keep the buildings intact and keep the architectural character in place.

^ wow that building is absolutely cursed. Lots of bad management in the past. Remember the Gold Coast Cafe? No idea what's going on there, but it would be positive if the teardown revived the incredible, old church building behind it. I'd really hate for a surface lot or suburban style plaza.

Cleveland: Jack Cleveland Casino
http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2011/10/casino_builders_unlikely_to_pu.html Sandor said the question is not whether the building will lose it's historic designation, but weather it will remain certified for IRS purposes for tax credits. Those tax credits allow Forest City to recoup a portion of what it has spent on past renovations. ha ha, you were right the first time sir.
