Akron: University of Akron: Development and News
More good news from the U. That area of Wolf Ledges/Grant is pretty shabby and boring....this new construction will definitely help out a bit.

Visited the Soda shop last nite. WOW. The place is VERY COOL and the ice cream was absolutely delicious. The 1930's era pics of CLE on the wall were a really nice touch...fittingly nostalgic. Definitely a mixture of past and present. I think they're gonna do great business, esp since they'll be open to 10pm most days. 8-)

Governor John Kasich
Come on Hts, not today!!! I mean social "ills" such as poverty and the like. Sure, many republicans are hypocrites, as are democrats. One can argue that democrats want to intrude on our personal freedoms just as much. Trust me, I can't stand republican's who preach "small government" in one breath only to increase military spending, Drug War and Patriot Act in another. That's why I'm a Libertarian.

Mikel, I think you are way overgeneralizing. How many republicans and democrats do you know? What in your life experience tells you that republicans are more selfish than democrats? Most republicans I know are not selfish. Quite the opposite, in fact. They are generous with their charity. Just like most democrats I know. The republicans I know simply believe that government should play a lesser role in solving our social problems. You can have a "collective effort" outside of government. It's in your power. Now whether you agree with that method is your prerogative. But I think it's wrong to make vast, sweeping judgments like that.

Cleveland: Public Square Redesign
Agree!! Some retail would work wonders. An outdoor restaurant would be ideal. I'm such a shill for Bryant Park lol... http://www.otto-otto.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/06/sw-porch.jpg http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/20/Bryant_Park_Xmas_shopping_jeh.JPG http://z.about.com/d/manhattan/1/7/u/_/Southwest-Porch-at-Bryant-Park.JPG

Wow, this sucks. I can't say I'm surprised though. Just like with any profession, you find cops who are stupid, or just lazy.

^ it has to be pretty exhilarating to be involved with a project like that! Agree with McNulty, this isn't going to hurt Great Lakes one bit. It's going to make the area even more of a destination.

Cleveland: Public Square Redesign
Just looking at that second pic got me thinking....anyone else think that the current lack of advertising makes the square (and the city) seem drab, less vibrant?

Is Detroit the New New York?
This was a topic of discussion on reddit.com a few months ago. Shoot- I can't dig it up because the site is now blocked from my work!! Anyhow, the overwhelming response from Detroiters was that scale of crime and political corruption were too overwhelming, and would prevent any sort of renaissance.

Cleveland: Jack Cleveland Casino
Oh man....I wonder if this is a permanent move? The irony here is that the area alongside the river COULD be a fantastic recreation area complimenting the casino. The ampitheater is a big part of it. If you've ever been to an event down there you know exactly what I'm talking about. It would be the outdoor component to Phase II and that could integrate the city with our river that we love to hate so much. Why do I have the feeling that we're going to sacrifice way too much in the narrow-minded pursuit more parking? It is? And what does the TC Ampitheater have to do with the casino? Are they putting a surface lot there?

Governor John Kasich
Hi Jeff. I believe it's unrealistic and naive to continue on with the status quo and expect positive results. But to be honest, I never meant to say that "everything" should be privately funded. Just most things.

Governor John Kasich
Our ideology is on two different planets lol. I'm glad you brought up the constitution though, my spider senses honed at Akron Law tell me that special interests are pushing our military into world affairs well beyond what was intended under the constitution. I'm sure we could have very good discussion of this over several beers....when's the next happy hour!

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
Question for the guy in charge.... What's the deal with the video display at the west platform at Tower City? I'm getting bored reading each day about the AP news on the NFL Pro Bowl, the explosion in Russia, the NHL All Star game, and that plane that miraculously landed in the Caribbean. These 4 things happened months ago!!!! I'm sure that display was not cheap. But aside from telling time, and flashing the RTA web address, it serves no purpose. Can someone fix this so that it at least provides updated news? Or better yet, fix it and use it to sell ad space so it can bring in more money to RTA. Any effort toward this would be much appreciated.

Well, right. Though we may disagree on just how far removed we are from the government elites in control. My belief is that we need to "de-fund" them. When others feel as "I" do, and wish to channel money to a cause, it becomes "we." "We" are the world. -Michael Jackson

A very significant part of the Medicaid budget is for "low birth weight" babies. So the government could and should fund prenatal health care for Ohio's poor expecting mothers. That will be a difficult concept for the Republicans to accept. Like Steven Colbert said, the government should fund: (1) National defense, and (2) Nothing else To be fair, that's not to say that other things shouldn't be privately funded. More government simply is not the answer to all of our problems. With less government support, you can find who is truly moral and not just a hypocrite. Considering the deficiency in private nonprofit funding for this problem, and other poverty issues, don't we already know the answer to that question? Well one can argue that an answer could arise from: 1. current government based framework is inefficient and consuming too many tax dollars, thus leading to less money available. 2. we've been so conditioned that it's government's job to save people, so less charity is given via private means as a result. As for the poverty issues as a whole, hmmm, you bring up a good point. I believe the issues go far deeper than anything that can be alleviated by simply allocating more money. But again, I contend that with our backs against the wall, the vast majority of Americans will respond to the needs of our people. In my opinion, we can help out far more creatively and allocate our money far more effectively than the government can. Again, that's my opinion and you're welcome to feel differently.

This is sad news about Lelolai, and a real loss for the hood. How long have they been there? A new restaurant will be one step forward, one step back.
