I have my opinion, and an indisputable source, Wikipedia, on my side! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_most_charitable_countries
  2. This is sad news about Lelolai, and a real loss for the hood. How long have they been there? A new restaurant will be one step forward, one step back.

Hey there Boreas! That money that currently goes toward those in need isn't just created by the government (well, it is minted by....) it's taken by threat of imprisonment from you and I. If we were allowed the freedom to allocate our tax dollars, I have faith in the American people that those who truly need the money will be helped. And not only that, you would see much less money toward using our military to fund foreign invasions. Not only that, but if taxes were cut or abolished, I still don't think anyone would starve in America. Too many good people honestly care about these things. Anyhow, that's how life is in my libertarian, anarcho-capitalist utopia! I invite you to live there.

A very significant part of the Medicaid budget is for "low birth weight" babies. So the government could and should fund prenatal health care for Ohio's poor expecting mothers. That will be a difficult concept for the Republicans to accept. Like Steven Colbert said, the government should fund: (1) National defense, and (2) Nothing else To be fair, that's not to say that other things shouldn't be privately funded. More government simply is not the answer to all of our problems. With less government support, you can find who is truly moral and not just a hypocrite.
  5. We are a diverse group on this forum, with often completely opposite views. However, we can make all agree, and unite to make difference as one voice to oppose the further destruction of our cities. Whether it's here or Cincy or Columbus or wherever, we can channel our energies toward doing something...anything that could help. I will surely be writing to the planning dept. and thanks McCleveland for the links. We must oppose loud and ignorant majority of people like this who are so dumb they cannot even spell "raze" correctly: Cleveland.com. 7. Not likely to happen imho, but fun to talk about.... Drafting Drew Carey in Ohio A group of libertarian-minded conservatives are attempting to draft television star Drew Carey into the Ohio Senate race against Sherrod Brown. With no clear-cut Republican contenders having emerged yet for the contest, conservative activist Josiah Schmidt took it upon himself a little more than a week ago to construct a website and Facebook page to kick off the draft effort. While Carey, who is from Cleveland but currently lives in Los Angeles as host of "The Price is Right," has not yet commented on the movement, Schmidt told POLITICO the Reason Foundation has already agreed to reach out to the television star about the possibility. Reason, a libertarian think tank, partnered with Carey on a documentary series on the plight of Cleveland last year. continued at: http://www.politico.com/blogs/davidcatanese/0311/Drafting_Drew_Carey_in_Ohio_.html
  8. For some reason your post reminded me that Asia Town could benefit greatly from a Visitor's Center. Make it easy to find, even outside the district if necessary. Staff it with knowledgeable people who have an in-depth understanding of all that the neighborhood has to offer. Offer discount coupons, a book store and event schedules. Would be an easy way to bring more casual, downtown visitors into the fold. Lure more people who typically head straight back to I-90/71/77 right after Cavs, etc.

For a year my wife taught 3rd grade at a public charter in Slavic Village. I'm not the biggest fan of unions, but what she and the other young teachers experienced in their work environment was deplorable. -She usually had no breaks during the day. -Parent would come in and say things like "my kid don't need school he's a ball player" or "I wish I never had my daughter." -Kids that desperately wanted to learn but had to be sent home because there was nobody to bathe them or provide clean clothes. -Desks and chairs being thrown on a daily basis. -Break up physical altercations between parents and other peoples children. -Kids who were abused or abandoned and non stop phone calls and meetings with child services. -When she got home she did lesson plans until around 10pm because she loved her students and wanted them to learn. By May she just couldn't handle it anymore. She had to take time off. Years later she is now teaching again at a much much better run public charter in Lorain. Really, to see her and teachers like her trying to succeed under those conditions in Slavic Village was really brutal. Anyhow, my point is not to cry about it, but just wanted to give my 2 cents on the matter of teacher burnout. p.s. Almost forgot, the much touted and talked about Christmas bonus turned out to be a canned ham from the millionaire CEO of the company. So funny, they touted this "bonus" in her job interview and through November, like it would be a thousand dollars! Surprise lol.

I may have to work Thursday night....unfortunately I'm a game time decision. Oh, and thanks so much for the rapid info!! p.s. I would never object to jolly scholar
  11. This is more unacceptable behavior on part of the Clinic. Who can we contact?
  12. They are entranced by that mustache. And so am I....
  13. Is that Lazarus in that first pic? Any chance they'll open up some windows on that building?

That book is amazing....I'll be getting that for sure. Thanks for posting!!
  15. Drop ceiling....of course!!!! And why not glass block those pesky windows while they're at it!!!!!
  16. Way back in the 90's there were awesome plans to convert a good portion of BF Goodrich into residential. Yada yada yada instead they tore down most of the BF Goodrich complex..... Back then I remember the City was not exactly receptive to getting behind the idea. But now 10 years later it appears things are finally getting on track.
  17. Why not just tighten the stupid, irresponsible behavior policy? I'm sure you don't want the coast guard circling every boat in the marina for alcohol violations. Shouldn't police resources be better suited elsewhere? Do we need E. 4th street style fencing to keep people in licensed areas? Really I've been coming to this place for ten years and I've never once seen a fight there.
  18. If you try and bring your on beer to Wendy Park, they will do exactly that and did multiple times last year when we played volleyball. Well that sucks. I guess I'll be sticking closer to the bar/marina area then.

The loss of the lighthouse was one of the great architectural tragedies imho. It used to be quite a chore to find a pic of it, but it was absolutely amazing! Found a pic: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lighthouse,_by_Sweeny%27s_Photographic_Landscapes.jpg
  20. Oh...ha ha....gotcha. :wink2:
  21. I suppose it's only natural there be some disagreement over Wendy Park. It is after all a limited resource. Being situated at a Marina I'm not sure it's possible you can shake the "bucket of miller" blue collar boating crowd. I've accepted this, and have grown to appreciate the diversity a bit, even though I despise country music and cheesy tropical themed cover bands. But the day the authorities try and confiscate my cooler is the day I'm gonna have to throw down! It's the freedom of Wendy Park that makes it great. The moment they start feeling the need to crack down on people just minding their own business [read: open container] the place is ruined.
  22. Hmmm...any chance that Pearl Road has its origin in freshwater mollusks? Would love to have a better look at the city back then. I'm guessing that in the future we'll be able to visually experience cities through every time period. Thanks for posting!!! Ugly soils that is. I think we can all see why they are using the auger cast pile for the foundations based on the existing site conditions. The pics are much appreciated. Thanks MayDay! Isn't that all infill? I thought the original bluff ran basically along Main Ave. I could swear reading that they were using a pad for the office building. I might have gotten confused, it may have been general discussions about building in Cleveland and why we have a lot of 10-15 story buildings. Anyway, good to see them working on it. That's been an open sore... Front Street was the original shoreline. Note the hillside that this site cuts into. While this is not 100% accurate, this zoom-in birdseye view from 1877 is accurate enough (you can see Front Street coming down that hill from Water (West 9th) Street by the old Union Depot, it's retaining wall is still there from 1862)... http://www.maps.com/map.aspx?pid=13130&AID=10297911&CJPID=3214&SID=popshops m
  23. Yeah I was thinking there should be a better way to connect to the Rapid from that lot, rather than walking down Madison. Guys, we're gonna have to resolve this issue if we're going to court investors for our massive TOD.
  24. Agree I think the food will be the major change. And a positive one at that. Before Sunset it was Bourbon St. Cafe. Only the name changed. Same bands, same aura. I think Crop would be crazy to try and change the casual atmosphere.
  25. Ha...my hood is adjacent to a factory.
