  1. As far as stupid lists go, I think this one was at least somewhat coherent. While I'm not surprised that Ohio would make a list of cold states lol, I think the real issue is more bad publicity for California. Imagine a state with all of its universities, famed and beautiful cities, great history, a tourist mecca with stunning vistas, busy ports, hundreds of miles of beaches, cutting edge technology sector and a wealth of natural resources that far surpass most countries....and somehow that state is in financial ruin! If there was ever a more obvious, more damning example of a dysfunctional government, it is California.

Beautiful pics! Unfortunately, my first thought when I saw the thread was this horrendous issue: http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2010/06/post_302.html

Ha! Generally speaking, people who agree with you are geniuses, and people who don't are complete morons. :-) ya think? Not here though. I won't hear of it!

Wait a minute, I know more than a few knee-jerk responding unthinking liberals! If you know a good mix of people with diverse backgrounds and life experience, you see that often times, some pretty bright people can disagree, and be on two sides of an issue. Then again, if we aren't defining liberal and conservative the same...then who knows what we're even talking about. Or maybe its an epiphany. But barring divine intervention, thank goodness there are liberals to enlighten the benighted, unthinking masses that there is a better way!
  5. Also in bird town, bela dubby cafe/gallery. This is my home away from home. Great vibe, like a cool living room. Free wifi. Quiet in the day, pretty lively at night. Enjoy your trip!!
  6. Right! I'm not if revisiting the idea is part of Euclid's new waterfront plan. But really, it would be so nice to have a "magnet" shoreline attraction like that here...something we are sorely missing right now.
  7. Picturesque town! I wish we had a pier like that here in Cleveland. Peaked roofs > flat roofs
  8. It would be shocking to lose this beautiful building.

That sounds like libertarianism to me. Now I'm curious, if you don't mind, how would you define conservatism then? p.s. this is why it's easier (and funner) to use stereotypes. Hippy = liberal and army sergeant = conservative. I don't know a single person whose personal beliefs aren't a mishmosh of lcertain ideals claimed by liberals AND conservatives.

Ha ha, do you look like this? http://media.photobucket.com/image/beavis%20butthead%20hippy%20teacher/artilleryleg/DavidVanDriessen.jpg We're dealing in stereotypes here...painting with the same broad brush that may (incorrectly) identify someone in a pickup truck and gun racks as being conservative.

The city does not strike me as textbook liberal. Off the top of my head I'll take one example of a stereotypical liberal cause, recycling. (I know I'm over generalizing here just play along!) I've worked downtown on and off for ten years. If I have glass, plastic, newspaper etc. to throw away I'll be damned if I can find a recycling bin anywhere at any building, or any sidewalk. It is a stark contrast to stereotypical, liberal minded cities like Portland and San Francisco where recycling bins are everywhere. So I guess Cleveland, to me, isn't "classic" liberal. At least in the context of being environmentally sensitive. I mean, look at Edgewater Park where you are surprised if people have the decency to throw garbage in the garbage can. Now I know this isn't scientific....and I don't think conservatives are more prone to litter or not recycle, but this is just my subjective opinion that Cleveland is not liberal- at least in that sense where being eco-sensitive is identified as such.
  13. I finally got a good look at the brand new dorms that are right next to Infocision Stadium. Great looking building from a distance, but.... I'm now convinced that the U of A has absolutely zero understanding of urban planning. I haven't seen worse street presence since Stonebridge in the Flats west bank...it is not the least bit inspiring. At Akron there is disturbing pattern of treating the surrounding streets and sidewalks as hot lava to be avoided at all costs. Look at Polsky building and that massive parking deck on Exchange! These places should be inspiring street life, not killing it. It's very disappointing. My school continues spending hundreds of millions to remake the campus into a less walkable place in order to 1) cater to speeding cars and 2) wall off the student population from the surrounding area. Perhaps there is no foresight, or worse, the powers that be are surrendering to the idea the the neighborhood just isn't safe or worth welcoming. I can't believe I have to suggest this, but Akron would be well served to bring in arch nemesis Kent State Univeristy to help out. Someone needs to straighten out this backward, anti-urban mindset that is suddenly so pervasive. It's one thing to understand the haunting, looming effect of the past few decades of bad planning (hello Cleveland State), but when the mistakes of the past continue on, that is just intolerable.

Oh that beer comment IS sacrilege... Do you think Nilla' wafers taste the same as home made cookies?

Oh come on...that "e" at the end is completely unnecessary! So pretentious. I think I see the problem. Try reading Shakespeare instead. :-)

Wow, a lot of you guys are just weird! Anyhow... -I can't stand Quentin Tarrantino...total hack. -I think reading Shakespear is absolute torture...he's another hack. -Entertainers who preach politics (Eddie Veddar!) are totally annoying. It's like, singing like crap and being famous doesn't give you the right to lecture anyone. STFU. -After a few drinks, I'd probably "get with" Hillary Clinton -When I was in college I started a Baywatch fan club Well, right now I feel glad that nobody on this forum would recognize me...except for mrnyc maybe. I think my secrets are safe.
  17. This is the kind of story that I hate to hear about. It's a story about dysfunctional government, the likes of which we absolutely cannot afford to tolerate in our city. It is reminiscent of the complete frustration that forced Sonny Bono to run for office in order to get through the b.s. of trying to cope with a corrupted and broken political process. http://www.clevescene.com/cleveland/hostel-fire/Content?oid=2216133
  18. That is a beautiful rendering. mb11 your post makes way way too much sense!

Tom, you should hook up with another forum poster named Blake. And another guy on the Akron Zips forums named Jake. Amazingly, all three of you have eerily similar positions on the arena proposal, and you seem to have some real trouble with respecting differences of opinion....just like Blake/Jake! Strange.
  20. I find it ironic that they felt the need to destroy the profitable drive in theatre before making this decision. That area of town has the feel of a wasteland. I want the drive in back.

There used to be an amazing surf shop right there....Gil's Surf Shop. Back in the 60's and 70's families from Pittsburgh and Youngstown used to vacation there. My friend Neal Luoma was the first surfer in Ohio, and he taught a lot of the tourists to surf. Back then Ashtabula and nearby Geneva on the Lake had a very cool surfing culture going on until the area became less of an attraction. The tourists stopped coming and gradually all of the other surfers there moved on to places like California, Florida and Australia for their sunnier skies and better waves. But Neal is still there. He was always content calling Ohio his home. In fact, he has become something of a legend. And not just for us here along Lake Erie, Neal gets well deserved props from surfers all over the world.
  22. So any time a business fails, it's appropriate to just tear down the building?

  25. But you can see Canada from Cedar Point! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pelee,_Ontario Also, there is a very incredible and strange phenomenon where certain atmospheric conditions do allow you to see across Lake Erie. It relates to contrasting temperatures between the water and the air. I have witnessed this event with my own eyes where warehouses in Ontario were visible from Edgewater Park in Cleveland. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,206349,00.html http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,206349,00.html
