I hear ya man. For whatever reason it seems things in Akron take ten times longer to develop. We used to laugh because the "Coming soon Ohio Brewing Company" sign was in the Oneills building window for maybe five years.
  2. ^ Right on. They can lease out sections of the square to businesses and maybe sell some ad space for revenues. Create more stakeholders who have an interest in keeping the place clean and safe. Oh, I forgot to mention there are also fireplaces at the Bryant Park "porches" for year round use. And I must say it again...they sell their own Bryant Park microbrew on tap!! We could really use this. Cleveland deserves it. http://www.wichcraftnyc.com/porch
  3. I spent the day in Bryant Park in NYC today. It is a flat out amazing public space. It's got mass transit, two outdoor bars/cafes with boardwalk seating, microbrew on tap, ping pong, bocce ball, live music, grassy areas and tons of tables and chairs for meeting up or simply for enjoying the surroundings. In my opinion it's everything that Public Square (and the mall) should be but isn't. I don't think we have to reinvent the wheel to remake Public Square. Those through streets must be dealt with, sure. But something as simple as a few kiosks selling hot chocolate or such would be a huge step in the right direction. Anyway, here are a few pics if you're not familiar: http://www.ny-photos.com/bryant_park.html

Also, it will have special events for Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Years Eve, and New Years Day. Here's the previous discussion on UO: http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php/topic,24409.0.html

Thanks for the great pics! As a former Akronite I've seen a host of positive changes, and just as many awful, frustrating setbacks that I won't get into here... I will say that the city absolutely MUST ditch the one way streets asap. Right now the role of every street, save for Main, is to funnel traffic through or away from the city as quickly as possible. I sincerely hope that becoming more pedestrian friendly and accomodating to retail growth will be a primary goal. By the way, I was fortunate to attend the Time Warner Roadrunner Marathon last weekend. It was crazy seeing so many people, including the college students spending the day downtown. Very strange sight for someone who practically had downtown to himself for ten years!
  10. Love Baltimore! I really admire the energy (if not the architecture) at their Harbor. And you have to love the historic side of Fells Point. I sincerely hope North Coast Harbor and the Flats can follow suit very soon. Thanks for posting MayDay!!!!

I think the majority of voters are going to rely on what matters to them most: physical appearance. Is it me or has Governor Strickland looked kind of gray and colorless lately? Kasich "The Trainophobe" practically conveys youthful exhuberance in comparison. Either way, I'm not sure either candidate could find the city of Cleveland without the aid of mapquest.

Shame on those wealthy out of state patricians for corrupting our Cuyahoga County officials lol... By your logic the voters support certain candidates or party because they love and admire a dysfunctional government.
  13. I was there! Great energy about the place...it was packed. The furniture was pure artistry and still very functional. By the way, the building has so much potential it's unreal.
  14. I'm with Ron Paul on this. Again he reminds me that he may be too principled, honest and well reasoned to ever get elected to the presidency. http://www.ronpaul.com/2010-08-20/ron-paul-sunshine-patriots-stop-your-demagogy-about-the-nyc-mosque/
  15. I am sincerely proud of Lakewood. Head over to Lakewood Park on 4th of July...I defy anyone to find a more diverse city than Lakewood, Ohio.
  16. FYI we have a special outdoor screening Out of Place Thurs. 8pm at P.E.A.C.E. Park in Coventry. Admission is six dollars and is sponsored by Phoenix Coffee. This is likely to be our last big local showing and the weather is supposed to be beautiful...so check it out! http://outofplacemovie.com/2010/08/screening-this-thursday-in-coventry/

A few years back the "Loser card" was played up very nicely in Columbus. On city BUSES THEMSELVES they had billboards showing the stupid face of a driver who was caught d.u.i. and the slogan was like "This bus is Jimmy's new ride because he got caught drinking and driving." Now Jimmy has no pride left because he's on the bus lol.
  18. Great news....can't wait to see the renderings!!
  19. Wow, 70 rail cars at a time...not exactly congruent with the toothless Lakefront Plan that we wasted so much time with.

  21. Northeast Ohio losing two Akron grads who happen to be some of the regions biggest advocates: BLACK KEYS SAY GOODBYE TO AKRON Northeast Ohio’s Most Successful Band Begins to Cut Its Hometown Ties by D.X. Ferris The Black Keys are the biggest local-music success of the past decade. But the duo’s latest album, Brothers, could be their last as an Akron band. Drummer Patrick Carney has already moved to New York City. Frontman Dan Auerbach is still in Akron, but he’s got his eyes on Nashville. “Akron’s a great place,” says Auerbach. “But we get to see all these great cities and spend time in these beautiful cities, and sometimes you come home and it’s a little bit of a bummer. We have to drive to Cleveland to go to Whole Foods and the West Side Market almost every week. To see an independent film, you’ve got to drive 40 minutes.” article continues at http://www.clevescene.com/cleveland/black-keys-say-goodbye-to-akron/Content?oid=1953648
  22. As for Rock Bottom closing, I blame a lot of that on location. The west bank is not exactly a destination any more.
  23. The Coast Guard building absolutely MUST be the terminus of the Towpath Trail. Throw in an interactive coastal museum, bike shop and a hostel and we have our magnet and impetus for continued positive change for our shoreline.

  25. Count me as one who thought it was a bad idea to allow Wolstein to tear absolutely everything down north of the bridge. I'm worried that the unique character of the place has been forever lost.
