Cleveland Subway/Bridge Tour + Surrounding Area 2009 / 2010
Amazing shots! Love the subway tour. But I can't believe how vacant the city looks on such a beautiful day.

Cleveland: Greetings from Edgewater Park
No joking...one spring day in 2005 I was swimming at Edgewater when something strange happened.....for the first time ever, I could see the sand bottom! It still clouds up sometimes, but for the most part it's been great. This year has been very clear and I'm loving it. Now if we could just divert the Cuyahoga somewhere else lol.

Cleveland: Cleveland State University: Development and News
One day last summer I walked by to check on the demolition of the old student center. It was absolutely surreal to see how eerily similar the signage rendition of the new building looked to the old building being knocked down behind it! Anyhow, I'll reserve judgement and hope for the best.

So cool to see some "up north" shots of my home state :) How is the new Devils arena? It looks pretty sweet from the NJ Transit.

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
Right. re: Detroit and Lorain, it was just in a "west side" context. Sorry that probably wasn't clear. I specifically mentioned Steve's Lunch and Happy Dog in particular because that's where friends of mine have had guns put to their heads. Both incidents were very late at night, I should add. Good points MayDay. But I'm worried about the businesses in and near these neighborhoods. They are some of my favorite places in the world, and now I have second thoughts about heading out there at night. A bad rep is very hard to shake. We all know how the perception of the Flats went south when the masses, rightly or wrongly, perceived the area as unsafe.

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
As much as I love Cleveland I feel compelled to share this story. On Saturday I made a rare trip to the Warehouse District to meet up with some friends who were visiting from out of town. On my way home to Lakewood I decided to take the scenic route on Detroit Ave. instead of the Shoreway. While I was passing Now That's Class, one of my very favorite bars, I saw my friend Kristen hanging outside with a bunch of her friends. It was 1:30 am and there were maybe 15-20 people outside Now That's Class enjoying the beautiful weather. I decided to park and have a few drinks with Kristen and her husband Sean. We had a couple of beers and soon enough it was 2am and the owner was announcing last call. I walked with Kristen and Sean for one block west on Detroit toward their car before turning back east toward my car. I drove home to Lakewood without incident. Well, tonight I just learned that literally seconds after I left my friends, they were confronted by some a-hole at gun point. The guy demanded money. Sean said he didn't have any, but Kristen, wanting this to end quickly, opened her purse and gave the robber everything she had...maybe 200 dollars. Meanwhile, some guy was close by on his front porch, witnessing the whole thing. He lept into action and tried to tackle the robber. That's when the gun started going off. Kristen and Sean fell to the ground, and the good samaritan was grazed in the head by one of the bullets. The robber fled and wasn't caught. Anyhow, I just wanted to share this story so others can be aware of the dangers that are out there on the near west side. Because I have SEVERAL friends who were also held up at gunpoint over the last year between Steve's Lunch and the Happy Dog, I suppose it was only a matter of time before such an incident happened again. Lets face it, there is some real trashy people living in the vicinity. It's a long long way from being a place I would consider "safe." In fact, I recently spoke to someone who bought a house in Detroit Shoreway and was held up at gunpoint in his own back yard. I don't care how up and coming a neighborhood is...life is way to short to subject yourself to that kind of violence. There are a lot of guys out there who should be in prison, but they just haven't been caught yet. Please, if you're going out there remember to use caution at all times. I won't be hanging out on Detroit Ave. any time soon, at least not while this incident is fresh in my mind. There is absolutely zero police presence in this neighborhood, and I won't patronize businesses in this area until this changes. It pains me to say this, especially since I have a film playing the Capitol theatre next month. I may not even go. I'll be content hanging out in Lakewood, where the possibility of being violently assaulted is far less likely. Again, sorry to report this, but I think it's important enough to share what happened on this forum. Scott

My wife is a teacher. She used to work for White Hat in Cleveland. She had no breaks during the day, and had to eat lunch standing, while teaching class.

Looking to find the best hood in/around CLE
Wow, thanks everybody! Some more info. He wants to buy, but I couldn't get a price range out of him. Lets just say he's middle-upper middle class. And kids are likely in the near future. So far a pretty convincing argument for East side lol. Love it. I wish I could get over there more...but that would mean crossing the river 8-)

Looking to find the best hood in/around CLE
Hi all. My biologist friend (now in Baltimore) came to me with this question. Before I selfishly force him to move near me in Lakewood, I figured I would present it for the wisdom of the forum.... Scott, My company has an opening in the Cleveland office (It’s in Little Italy), and they want me to consider taking it. Our maximum distance we’d like to live from the office is about 10 miles. Let us know if you have some ideas of good neighborhoods we should visit. We’re interested in… Walkability/access to restaurants/farmers markets/grocery stores Family friendliness Access to transportation (RTA/rail) Access to parks/trails Low crime (this should be easy to find compared to Baltimore) …not necessarily in that order. Please give is some ideas so we can do more homework!!! Thanks,

Go to Lakewood. Lots of variety re: housing. Most diverse community I've ever lived. Dog park in Rocky River Reservation along with a very nice paved jogging path. http://hikingohioparks.com/rocky-river-reservation-hiking-ohio-parks.html

I've been to the Toronado in San Diego (North Park). It is excellent, great vibe. If SF is like SD, yeah, it's definitely a cool place where you can hang and feel right at home. whatever you do, you must go to the Toronado http://toronado.com/ the neighborhood is interesting too.
