Cleveland: TV / Film Industry News
I know guys that I'm living in the past- it's fun, but the media from the New York Surf Film Festival is starting to emerge...surfers are notorious slackers. a sample of the glittery nyc crazy-ness: New York Surf Film Festival 2009 The best part is at 3:50, ha ha. We've just submitted to Sundance, a stretch, but we gotta at least try! And we're submitting to Cleveland Intl. this week. It would be so amazing to premier locally at the Cleveland Festival, it's drawing more people and getting even better with each passing year. If we're fortunate enough to get into Cleveland, you can bet it will be a ridiculous party. I'll get a block of rooms downtown for sure!! :drunk: Scott www.outofplacemovie.com

If you had the resources, how would you improve Cleveland?
1. Take pride in our lakefront: think investment into our coastal infrastructure ie beaches, wetlands, marinas, houseboat communities and green bulkheads along the river and a vast network of boardwalks. 2. Develop the Flats in accordance with our heritage....think wooden shipbuilding historical exhibits, narrow streets, brick buildings, retail and residential. 3. Remove all obstacles that block the connection between the Flats, Warehouse District, Whiskey Island and the Lakefront. This includes taming the shoreway, pedestrian bridges over the cuyahoga and a Transit Center serving as a concourse bridging Mall C over the Shoreway to North Coast Harbor. 4. Finishing the towpath trail terminating at the Coast Guard Staion at Wendy Park. 5. Remaking Euclid Ave into the finest street in America; a proud showplace of retail, residential and a District of Design that features the latest in technology and artistic achievemant. 6. While I'm at it, burn every bus...bring back the trolleys!!!! 7. Why stop now...level the Justice Center, and every other building that is damn ugly. So if you want to see these changes, vote ME for dictator of the CLE. Even though I live in Lakewood.

Oh no, don't change the name!!!! The bar has a terrific reputation, why would you abandone that? Damn, I was really looking forward to their corned beef and cabbage on St. Pats Day again.

Does that mean they'll be tearing down the original law building? I admit, the law school is one of the blandest places on earth.

Cleveland: Downtown Aquarium
I have to agree with MTS. I like the location. And if you consider the possibilities of the larger aquarium project in that is in works, maybe that could be a good fit at NCH. Why must everything be in one place? WHY??!!! And I don't want to here "well it's done like that in X place". If properly marketed this could be the thing that helps pump more people - permanent and visitors - into the west bank. If they want to visit NCH, that another "area" they will make a must see. Concentrating everything in once place is not always the answer.

Thanks guys. I have to say again that everyone in New York was just amazing. Lots of love for C-town, they treated so well from the moment we got there. We were real underdogs going into this festival, now things are really looking up for us. The awards party was packed and held at a swanky gallery owned by Red Bull and it was open bar. When the emcee announced that we won it was chaos, everyone in the place was so glad for us. I'll never forget it. Also it was such a rush to meet all kinds of people who are interested in Cleveland- people who have never been to Ohio, but came away really loving our city. And I met other ex-pat Ohioans who were curios about the movie and dropped in. I think my favorite memory (aside from meeting mrnyc of course) was that someone in the theatre recognized Hessler Street in the film and screamed "All right!" Thanks again urbanohio, can't wait to (fingers crossed) premier locally at Cleveland Intl. FF. Scott aka surfohio

Thanks so much for the kind words mrnyc!! This past weekend at the festival was the highlight of my life. New York is filled with so many kind and generous people I can't wait to get back. It was so great getting the chance to meet you on Sunday. It really meant a lot for us to get some Cleveland support down in Tribeca...unreal, thank you again. Scott And guess what.... http://www.globalsurfnews.com/news.asp?Id_news=43245 "The esteemed Viewers Choice Award For Best Feature Presented by Jet Blue and The Dominican Republic deservingly went to “Out of Place”, directed byScott Ditzenberger. “Out of Place” is an insider’s perspective of thesmall, underground community of Lake Erie surfers in Cleveland, Ohio." Cleveland: Flats East Bank
You make some excellent points. And there's a good question, should the Flats East Bank ever be resurrected and planned as a tourist destination? But I'm not convinced Wolstein is really committed to a new "neighborhood" at all. His last minute prayer for the Convention Center/MM shows that he's flexible as to the idea of what the FEB should or could become.

Cleveland: TV / Film Industry News
Nehst deleted their profile on Myspace months ago...A serious red flag, but like everyone in the local film community, I wanted to believe that they were for real. To me it's obvious they were taking advantage of our optimism. Anyhow, I just gave Cleveland some love in a Q&A interview on the New York Surf website. Please check it out: http://www.newyorksurf.com/2009/09/11/a-freshwater-perspective/ p.s. the interviewer's wife is from Solon Andrew Heyman: "There is...a dedicated crew of surfers on Lake Erie, making do with what they’ve got and making their own thing happen. Whatever you want to call their “scene,” it’s not burdened by the cynicism and obnoxious chest-thumping one associates with ocean surfing these days. It’s got a quiet, DIY aesthetic that is a hundred times more underground, more punk rock, than anything we’ve come to associate with the surf scene around New York..."

Thanks so much 8ShadesofGray. Everyone we have screened for is in love with the Soundtrack! There is a such a tremendous amount of great music here, and we wanted all of it to be local, or at least regional ie The Great Lake Swimmers are from Toronto. I also have to mention that The Dreadful Yawns, GLS, This Moment in Black History, Gabe Schray from Houseguest, BarnOwls, Celebrity Pilots and the All Golden...they all kindly donated their music to this film project. In return I hope to introduce those bands to a whole new audience and get them as much publicity as possible. I'm dying, I want to show everyone the film. But but we want to get into the Cleveland International Film Festival in March, and their rules prevent prior screenings in Ohio. But after that I hope to have several area screenings with the local bands playing live for the soundtrack. It should be pretty wild! Hopefully we'll get off to a flying start with a good review from renown Urban Ohio critic, mrnyc at the premier. Scott- Cleveland: League Park
Terrific news about League Park! It is great to hear about the association with Bertman's Mustard and the Baseball Heritage Museum. That is the kind of synergy needed to get things done. Thanks for keeping us informed.- Cleveland: TV / Film Industry News
Jeremy we would love to hit up some festivals in LA. We haven't targeted any specific ones yet, but we will. Any recommendations? California is an important place for us...after the festival circuit, when the film comes out on dvd we're planning on touring it, playing it at theaters, gyms, coffee shops or wherever we can find an audience. It's going to be a chance of a lifetime for us as filmmakers. Please feel free to join our email list on the site!! Would love to meet more of the out of the area Urban Ohio jet set in person!!- Cleveland: TV / Film Industry News
I met John. Again, very cool guy and dedicated. Hodads is one heck of a record store. I'm so glad you bought tickets! Looking forward to meeting you (I'll be the sweating, nervous guy about to run out of the theater lol). Thanks so much for your support for our film, and for Tribeca Cinemas. haha how funny. was it john or rich? john is my step-bro. well sort of. my mom got married to his dad after i got married. ha. they are good guys and have a real passion for the business. i love that strip of madison, its very cool. ps -- i just ordered tickets -- so looking forward to it!- Cleveland: TV / Film Industry News
Hi Jeremy. You're absolutely right, the trailer is too long. Getting a shorter, more professional looking pair of trailers is definitely on the agenda. The synopsis may sound depressing, but the angle of the film is from a surfing/waterfront perspective. Sure I am playing up the lost industry, past pollution, gray skies, the cold, but I am differentiating between Cleveland and places like San Diego, Waikiki, Maui and Australia. In this film you will hear surfers relocated from Florida, Hawaii's North Shore, Orange County, etc talking about why Cleveland is such an amazing place. And people we have screened for have all come away loving this city, its striking character, past hardships and its stunning potential for the future. Thanks for your interest and honest critique. I do hope you end up seeing (and liking!!) the film, and you'll see the city and its waterfront from a perspective that's a little bit differnt. In some ways, Cleveland is truly a surfing mecca. Scott- Cleveland: TV / Film Industry News
Thanks Mr. I hope to meet you there!! Hey, was it a friend of yours that owns Hodad's Records in Lakewood? We filmed one of the scenes there, the owner was very cool about it too. Scott- Cleveland: TV / Film Industry News
My documentary on the surfing culture in Cleveland is premiering in New York City on Sunday September 27th. Any UrbanOhio all stars in the vicinity of NYC please feel free to come by the Tribeca Cinemas, show starts at 4:25pm. We're getting a lot of interest and a ton of good publicity. Tickets available online but hurry, it will probably sell out- it's a small venue. Please check the link and scroll down to Out of Place http://www.nysurffilm.com/index2.php?req=fullschedule Thanks, Scott in Lakewood www.outofplacemovie.com- Cleveland: Detroit-Shoreway / Gordon Square Arts District: Development News
I truly believe it's the little things like this that can really inspire pride in the community.- Cleveland: Flats East Bank
Greyrat, your angry post makes complete sense to me. Wolstein's generic theater concept could simply work anywhere, and did nothing to capitalize on the historic, special, waterfront qualities of the Flats. I can't even go near the East Bank without feeling disgusted. "Anybody who LOVED Cleveland like he says would have incorporated a few of those buildings into his plan. There was tons of space to work them in - 80% of that area was surface parking. Kindlers could of been the quaint historic corner pub for his fake neighborhood if this loser had any vision, heart or soul. I don't believe for a second that Wolstein was doing this out of Altruistic movitations for Cle. He saw $$ dollar signs on the hot real estate market and wanted to turn an depreciating area into fast money."- Cleveland: Lakefront Development and News
