Cleveland: Flats East Bank
To get away from the ugly politics for a second.....what should the Flats look like? Everyone should be at least a little concerned with the preliminary "suburban office park" look to Wolsteins plan. The Flats are indeed a unique, unpolished jewell and any new development should correspond with their great history in mind. Anyone been to Baltimore recently? Fells Point, a historic waterfront neighborhood, should serve as a terrific model of how to rebuild each bank of the Flats. Like the Flats, Fells Point has a distinct, maritime heritage and caters to both visitors and locals alike. Check it out the photogallery for yourself www.fellspoint.us

Cleveland: Flats Developments (Non-Stonebridge or FEB)
Wow I hope this continues to gain momentum!!! Looks like Wendy Park/Whiskey Island may actually have a future after all. Question: Does anyone know what kind of projected numbers that casinos would draw to the area? Would the West Bank in particular be choked with traffic? It's fascinating to contemplate these ideas, though I don't think the waterfront needs a casino to be a draw. I hope that the future of the whole project doesn't hinge on the casino vote.

GoTribe I don't even know where to begin re: your post!!! But anyway, I predict the Indians to go on a roll. Interesting: The Great Lakes Exposition brought in 7 million visitors and $70,000,000 in tourism money between 1936-1937. http://www.earthstation9.com/index.html?193637_g.htm I say bring back the Aquacade.

I agree with you 100% about Edgewater and Whiskey Island. It's very frustrating because anyone should see the potential there. Especially with the possibility of the Towpath bringing ped and bike traffic right through to the Coast Guard station. Also it would be so easy and beneficial to construct your beach house at Edgewater. I would not be averse to setting aside space for retail and residential there either. Revenues generated could pay for making Edgewater look respectable. As far as a NJ style boardwalk goes, I can very easily picture one connecting the Flats East Bank, extending north of the along the River. (couldn't the rail bridge be modified to allow people to cross the river?) There you could recreate the long lost Euclid Beach atmosphere I believe. I think the only difference from copying NJ's layouts would be that a city like Cleveland deserves much better architecture alongside. It could look classic. The drawback is that there is no beach of course. But as far as bringing residents and visitors close to the water, that is still a great option. Sorry I only took pictures of waves on my trip back home. I have a one track mind!!

Erie Islands.....Fairport.....No fair, you are going way way beyond the boundries of Cleveland!!! Ironically, both mentioned have such "beautiful" views of nuclear power plants. p.s. NJ beaches are not all crowded!! http://www.state.nj.us/travel/virtual/islandbeach/ibsp_beach1.shtml

Mentor Headlands is a nice beach. But imho there is no surrounding development to compliment it as a major attraction. I have not seen "plenty" of beautiful beaches in the area as you say. You may be right, but how could anyone know that when so few areas are available to the public. I have mostly seen lots of concrete and rebar cast about in a poor attempt to control erosion. Interesting point about the bedrock/soil/sand issue. I wish the Lakefront Plan went into more detail about the issue regarding coastal engineering. As for Cleveland, there is no single, central destination for everybody to congregate in the warm months. It feeds the misconception that cleveland isn't a "happening city." But as far as the waterfront is concerened, it is a ghost town. I think the crowds that attend events like the rib cookoff, Flatsfest (RIP), etc. would be here each weekend if there were a public boardwalk with retail, arcades, and waterfront views.

I just got back from the Jersey Shore. It was amazing, the coastal atmosphere was truly magnetic, drawing crowds of tourists and locals to the water's edge. It got me wondering about all that Cleveland has lost. While memories linger on in old pictures of Euclid Beach Park and names like the "Beachland Ballroom" the wide sandy beaches and their crowds are long gone. The shoreline here is in bad shape. It's no longer a major attraction, but that has to change soon. Certainly it's possible to re-establish the lost beaches. And it's possible to design a waterfront that will once again be livable and beautiful. Even something simple, like a well placed boardwalk would be a step in the right direction. http://app.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060531/NEWS/605310390

Cleveland: Bob Stark Warehouse District Project
This is sounding very positive!! Thanks for the update. And this is the first time I heard discussion of turning the Main Ave Bridge into a lowered boulevard and moving the lakefront rail underground. Both excellent ideas in my opinion.

Sandusky-Erie Islands: Random Development and News
I am all for more marinas. But when I hear that more breakwalls are being contstructed I assume the worst. I hope the project won't destroy any of the few remaining beaches we have in this state.

The owner of the jewlry store, Bob Zimmer, is opening The Baseball Heritage Museum in the Colonial Marketplace. 4,800 square feet of space with all kinds of authentic memorabilia!!! The grand opening is tomorrow, coinciding with the Indians-Pirates game. As a salute to the Negro Leagues, the Tribe will be wearing throwback Cleveland Buckeye jerseys and Pirates will be wearing the colors of the Homestead Grays. Get out of the suburbs, downtown is the place to be. Scott

CLEVELAND - Euclid/East 4th update!
Well, I suspect the jeweler, A. Sissler, lost a lot of business because of the E. 4th construction project. Losing this historical collection is another loss for Cleveland. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5120835854#ebayphotohosting

Cleveland: Kassouf Hi-Rise Plans
Ha ha...from the moment I first saw the plan for those buildings last week I've been waiting for the "south side of Chicago" reference!!! Give me a crayon and a napkin and in 10 seconds even I could come up with something better looking. Seriously though, the whole car storage thing is a pretty cool idea.

Coming Soon... Out of Place: a portrait of surfing the Great Lakes A film I've been working on for almost 5 years. Ninety percent is shot in Cleveland. I hope it will make a positive impact and change perceptions of how people view the coastline here. It should be edited and released by next fall!!

SD has come a long way with their trolley's and busses. Now they're getting t.v.'s in them. This could be an asset for tourists, as well as an easy way for locals to catch up on news. http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/metro/20060412-9999-1m12bustv.html

Cleveland Public Schools: News and Discussion
Thanks KJP. I'm really glad I found out about this forum. It's very inspiring to hear about other ideas and opinions on our cities. For the last year I've been working at Key Tower. It's beautiful looking out over the lake and the city, seeing all the potential.

Cleveland Public Schools: News and Discussion
Hi I usually don't post here but this is a great forum. I am very close to the education issue in Cleveland. In my opinion this article hits the nail on the head, even if it's from Scene Mag. http://www.clevescene.com/Issues/2006-03-29/news/kotz.html
