Cleveland: Ohio City: Church+State (West 29th & Detroit Ave)
This is like the third HIngetown mural from an American Greetings alum. Dinara Mirtalipova is a self taught illustrator/designer. Born and raised in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, she eventually landed in snowy Ohio. Dinara studied Computer Science at the Tashkent State University of Economics, however her true passion was always patterns and illustration. Raised in Soviet Uzbek culture, Dinara inhabited Uzbek/Russian folklore that still influences her work. https://www.mirdinara.com/

^ This got me thinking.....seeing this place all lit up at night is going to have a tremendous visual benefit to what has been for so long a very forlorn looking stretch of Detroit.

So many good, hopeful little snippets in this article. Renaissance kind of thinking that's been long overdue, at least on the action side of the equation. While the 5-15 year timeline is a letdown, it does at least give plenty of time to plan out and do things the right way - finally.

How 'Race Records' Turned Black Music Into Big Business The recordings, which became a national phenomenon, captured artists like Bessie Smith and Louis Armstrong—but most artists were exploited and forgotten. ERIN BLAKEMORE In 1926, a self-taught musician named Big Bill Broonzy found his way to Chicago. A sharecropper turned soldier, he had left Mississippi and headed north to escape the pervasive racism of the Jim Crow South along with thousands of others of African-Americans in the Great Migration. Like many other black men, he worked as a janitor and a Pullman porter and a cook. But when he found himself in front of a microphone in a recording studio, the blues musician knew he had found his niche. Broonzy’s recordings were sold as “race records”—music for and by black audiences. But though he recorded hundreds of songs in just a decade, responding to a national hunger for black voices and black music, he barely made any money. “I didn’t get no royalties, because I didn’t know nothing about trying to demand for no money, see,” hetold Alan Lomax in 1947. Broonzy was just one of thousands of black recording artists who helped fuel the phenomenon of race records between 1920 and 1940. But though these artists pioneered new sounds in blues, jazz and gospel, most labored for no recognition and little pay. https://www.history.com/news/race-records-bessie-smith-big-bill-broonzy-music-business- Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
A friend of mine was beaten up at gunpoint and had his car stolen in Ohio City the other day. I wanted to share his FB post here. Early 6/3/20. It was warm and quiet. Peace ❤ It's all interrelated. I'm in pain. Body and Soul. I'm sitting on my porch steps, bleeding, waiting for the Cleveland Police. It's their second visit, now 1:36 a.m. Spent 3.5 hrs at the ER. I'm wholly broken- physically, spiritually, and emotionally. There is a lot of hate and violence going around, in many directions, a lot of confusion, and hurt. Around 8:15 last night, I was randomly attacked, pistol whipped, and my car was stolen. (*I'm okay..bloodied, sore and badly shaken. It could have been much worse). This is a cry for sanity. It is a lament. A lament for America, for my city..... We are dumb humans, fumbling around with our precious, broken, hearts. I don't have the energy or the inclination to HATE. I'm tired. I'm tired and I've had enough...it has to STOP. We need to stop hating each other and unite. It's all interrelated. We've been duped for so long..and now, with THIS pressure cooker?? Really? Is anyone surprised? I'm not. I could easily make a stab at our current (lack of)leadership. Rightfully. But look at the bigger picture:: 400 hundred years of oppression:: The Oligarchy:: Covid:: Stop hating each other:: Stop being distracted and look at the bigger picture:: THEY distract us and set us against each other:: If WE unite, WE can win the fight. I want to thank Cleveland Police (Officers Vick and Thompson), Cleveland EMS (Toni), and Metrohealth Hospital (Sandra, Sheamus, Sean, Stacy, Pam, Dr. Breitly & Dr. Noeller). I will not be online much. I need to heal (literally). I need to step back and listen, decipher what the Universe wants from me. Comments welcome, but I will not be responding. In the end, IF we are to prevail, if "All Lives Matter", we need to care for each other. If there isn't EQUAL JUSTICE for All, there will not be PEACE for All. Can you dig it? In the words of Kurt Vonnegut: "God damn it, you've got to be kind." All we have is love and each other. It's all interrelated..- Cleveland: Flats East Bank

Not saying you're wrong at all, but the Director of PFF was just on 92.3 saying that Clowney wasn't in the same league as Myles and the upper echelon of edge rushers. Haha. So you're saying Cleveland developers aren't "Sheik" enough (Zaremba Avenue Dist), or don't bring enough of that "South Beach flair" (Optima/Oligarch Ventures) ? Anyhow those rents would appear to bode well for even more infill. Good stuff!- Cleveland: Restaurant News & Info
Ya know a long time ago Tony George said in an interview that he had no personal or emotional attachment to his restaurants; they simply exist to generate revenues. That stayed with me. In a way I even admire him being truthful about it, but I figured I'd much rather spend money on the places where owners did put their emotion and care into their bars & restaurants.- The Official *I Love Cleveland* Thread
Local man builds Lido Lounge for squirrels By Zachariah Durr In these uncertain times, we have all responded differently to the pandemic of COVID-19. Maybe you taught yourself to bake, or finally started reading Infinite Jest. Or maybe you built a squirrel-sized replica of a local notorious strip club. A Twitter user who goes by the handle “Zarkerelli the Don” has created a feeding area for his backyard animal friends in the form of Cleveland’s 117th street staple, Lido Lounge. http://www.cleweekend.com/local-man-builds-lido-lounge-squirrels/?fbclid=IwAR0vsSSTVIn3geNm2YaMPAkrOMuZ5oSDUyRBW7zicq3yQ-xh4VAKTobcJQU- Cleveland: Restaurant News & Info
