Cincinnati Reds Discussion
For those thinking of seeing the Bravos this weekend - Saturday and Sunday are SRO, and tomorrow has only a small number of tickets left.

Cincinnati Bengals Discussion
They did, and I can't imagine them not keeping Jordan Shipley among others. Jerome Simpson's days are numbered. This situation is hilarious - T.O.'s arrival at the airport looked like a circus.

Cincinnati Bengals Discussion
Wow - hopefully T.O. starts strong quickly. I think he will probably be one and done, and if history repeats he will play nice in the sand box, or Jungle as it were. At least for this year. Daugherty seems pretty fired up in today's column if you have a chance to read it.

Cincinnati Bengals Discussion
I have mixed emotions on this - he might be able to help stretch the field, but he can also turn into a complete distraction. The only reason I would consider him is due to the anemic pass offense last year. The Bengals really blew strong defensive and running game performances.

Ohio: General Business & Economic News
Just to clarify my opinion that we need to become less dependent on manuafacturing jobs, I do think we need to continue to produce things. The issue is that this industry has seemingly been in a death spiral for a long time for reasons already mentioned. Other sectors of our economy have been growing, and this has been a continual drag on the overall performance. The sooner we get to what are going to be sustainable jobs the better as the numbers will become stable. Unfortunately, I do not think we know what the bottom is for this sector.

Cincinnati: Downtown: Queen City Square
Cool - this really shows how different the building looks in different light.

Ohio: General Business & Economic News
Wow - this analysis is pretty telling about the manufacturing economy over the past decade. Cincinnati fared the best in Ohio, but it seems the sooner we move past dependence on manufacturing jobs the better. http://cincinnati.bizjournals.com/cincinnati/stories/2010/07/12/daily34.html?surround=lfn Six of Ohio’s seven largest metropolitan areas are among the nation’s biggest losers of manufacturing jobs since the turn of the millennium, an analysis of the latest federal work force data has found. With an eye on 91-71 - that will win the division this year, just like 90.

CVG: Delta and Comair news
I think some people are just wondering what the market could be with normal conditions - after years of ridiculously high prices Delta has relatively recently lowered fares and begun to recapture some local market. Q4 year over year they had a 265,000 increase while Dayton had a 125,000 decrease. Is the drop at Dayton solely due to people going to CVG? If all of the increase at CVG is due to the drop in fares can we assume since there was an increase of 140,000 more than the decrease at Dayton that 55% of the Cincy leakage goes to airports other than Dayton? Is there more market leakage out there? My opinion is that people will have a deep distrust of Delta for a long time and Cincy generally has below average O&D (moreso to leisure than business). The only saving grace of the high prices was a convenient hub that supplied a lot of jobs. Delta finally gives reasonable fares but they are greatly reducing the hub, causing a loss of jobs and less convenience. To say Delta is an unpopular airline in Cincy is accurate.

CVG: Delta and Comair news
This report has a lot of good information: http://www.aviationplanning.com/Images/4Q2009Report.pdf It is hard to say was CVG's normal numbers would be with the same fares as Cleveland, or Columbus for that matter. We know that CVG had a Q4 increase in O&D of 32% to 1.085 M with a 24% decrease in fares. According to this Cleveland had a Q4 number of 1.653 M and Columbus was at 1.487 M. Dayton dropped a large amount from 695,000 (Q4 2008) to 570,000 (Q4 2009). Presumably, most of that went to CVG, which had a raw increase of 265,000. Using anecdotal evidence, I know most of the travelers at my company are open to CVG or DAY or CMH. While the lower fares have helped the inconvenience has definitely increased so many people choose other airports, which still generally have lower fares. So what could CVG's numbers have been in Q4 2009, for example - it feels like it probably would have been in the 1.25 - 1.3 M range with better fares and no other option but that is obviously a guess. I think we will see this number become somewhat clearer in 2010. One thing I do know, as suspected last year, Delta has zero loyalty to a community that supported a longtime, large, successful hub (I have been on many $1000 flights myself). I realize they are in this to make money, but I would hope the airport board is doing everything they can to bring in competition.

Cincinnati Streetcar / The Connector News
The greatness of the Enquirer is apparent with the increasing appearance of pages taken directly from USA Today. This is a slow death-sprial.

Cincinnati: Procter & Gamble
I have not seen this anywhere - good news for Cincy. http://cincinnati.bizjournals.com/cincinnati/stories/2010/05/10/daily61.html?surround=lfn Procter & Gamble Co. is bringing more than 600 new jobs to its Winton Hill Business Center in Cincinnati.

Nice - all good.

Cincinnati Streetcar / The Connector News
Interestingly there was a poll question in the Enquirer yesterday of whether or not people supported the funding. When I voted the approval was something like 70% - I can no longer find the poll. Not sure if those results held or why it was taken down so quickly.

Cincinnati: Clifton Heights - 65 West Apartments
I am glad for the development but this is also somewhat sad. I played my first baseball for Friars, which had some decent teams way back when.

Urban Ohio "Picture Of The Day"
The use of words to convey the opposite of their literal meaning. This example gets a pass, but Alanis definitely had no idea of what was or was not ironic. Maybe disappointing, or a juxtaposition, or Murphy's Law, but not ironic.

Cincinnati Reds Discussion
Once again I am ticked that the ballpark did not open to the city instead of the river. Especially with this new building the view would have been awesome. I think there was some excuse about FWW somehow creating a bad view, but it seems bogus (unless there is reason the diamond has to face a certain direction). I am excited about the development around the ballpark, but we missed badly on both of our stadiums' orientation. Pittsburgh definitely got this right.

The Ohio State University Buckeyes Basketball Discussion
Great season Bucks! The last loss is always toughest, but I think Matta will continue to keep them a contender in the future.

Cincinnati: Local Media News & Discussion
I do not think the internet was the cause of their demise - it is correct that WOXY could never figure out that model. My implication was that they were an ongoing concern as a terrestrial station, but a failure as an internet-only station, regardless of the reason. I felt it would not work when it happened, which is why I was more sad in 2004 than any point since.

Cincinnati: Population Trends
Certainly possible - it would be interesting to see how the estimates of 1999 compared to the 2000 census (or what the 2000 estimate would have been). When will the Census Bureau release the 2010 numbers?

I feel bad for the long time employees, but this has been a relatively slow, painless death. It started the day they went internet only.

Best Movies Ever Made?
Taxi Driver The Usual Suspects Fight Club To Kill A Mockingbird Cache' - probably does not belong, but I just like this movie. Sleeper: Children of Men - the whole feel and mood and the thought that women mysteriously can no longer become pregnant is haunting and intriguing. The chaos that follows is surprising yet makes sense, reminiscent of some our own world's issues.

NEONS Unplugged needs your help on the Jukebox selections
I know this is late, but Death Cab (for some more Ben Gibbard) would be a great choice - Plans would probably be best for the masses but Transatlanticism is quite good. I love that there is a Pavement disc on the list. For future consideration any Pixies or Dino Jr would also be good, and while there has been more than one suggestion for the Blue Album by Weezer the Red Album is a lot of fun.
