Pitt #20 and West Virginia #22 - this should help with SOS if everyone, especially UC, keeps winning.

University of Cincinnati Bearcats Football Discussion
Can we agree to not bring up the nameless one on this thread the rest of the year? It is clear they have no interest in playing a regular series so it has no impact on the Bearcats. That being said, this team could be at least top 2-3 in any conference this year so we should enjoy it. It is relatively early in Kelly's career, and I constantly complain about gametime coaching, but I have never seen a team completely change it's offensive personality in the middle of a game like last night. Pure genius. Let's see what happens with Pike and how Collaros can do the next couple of games. Addendum: that game also shows you what constant effort will give you -early in the game the defense could not touch B.J. Daniels, but they stuck with the plan. By the end of the third quarter he had probably run 300 yards behind the line of scrimmage, and by the fourth he was gassed, and his will was broken (not to be overly dramatic).

Wow - nice win with some adversity and silly mistakes. Regardless, a 17 point win on the road against a juiced team ranked 21st is impressive.

It sounds like Kelly is going to get a lot of time on ESPN radio and television tomorrow (on different shows 11-2) - good to keep spreading the word to the nation. Maybe some of the students in the group can catch some of this.

University of Cincinnati Bearcats Football Discussion
I am impressed with all the Bearcat discussion - when I took night classes there while working I used to tease the traditional students that I had been to more games than they had and I had gone to a different undergrad school. This is an opportunity to really grab the student body and get them involved for life. Two years ago there were an estimated 212K living alumni with 105k in Greater Cincy - there is no reason the program cannot take a step up if they energize this base as well as local non-alumni. I do think overall the Big East is down this year, but still not worst of the BCS, at least according to the first two sources I checked. There is a surprise at who has finished 6th and another BCS conference has finished 7th: Currently, Big East is 5th but were 3rd a couple of weeks ago http://realtimerpi.com/football/ncaaf_conf_Men.html Currently, Sagarin has Big East 5th http://www.usatoday.com/sports/sagarin/fbc09.htm?loc=interstitialskip Final 2008-2009 rankings, Big East 3rd on realtime rpi http://realtimerpi.com/football/2008-2009/ncaaf_conf_Men.html Final 2008-2009 rankings, Big East 5th on Sagarin http://www.usatoday.com/sports/sagarin/fbc08.htm Final 2007-2008 rankings, Big East 3rd on realtime rip http://www.realtimerpi.com/football/2007-2008/ncaaf_conf_Men.html Final 2007-2008 ranking, Big East 4th on Sagarin http://www.usatoday.com/sports/sagarin/fbc07.htm

University of Cincinnati Bearcats Football Discussion
Personally, I am glad both are doing well, although having gone to OSU I am sometimes amused at the sense of entitlement regarding football. Especially since I saw some relatively bad teams. I do think it is silly to argue about who is better since they do not play regularly and are in different conferences. Here is a less biased ranking, which is more along the lines of what the BCS ranking is (where UC is 8 and OSU 11). Here UC is 9 and OSU is 10: http://www.realtimerpi.com/

Cincy1 replied to The_Cincinnati_Kid's post in a topic in Restaurants, Local Events, & Entertainment^^^ That is great news for Bad Veins - I had some slightly insider information that they had signed a little while back but was not sure where the information should go. I think the label is out of California and has some pretty good indie bands under contract.

This does indeed suck although I really felt the loss when the terrestrial station was sold, and they moved to internet only.

Dayton: NCR
This is poaching at its worst and metro Atlanta has always been one of the most agressive regions. State leaders better come up with a better plan to counter any offers in the future and get better information - to not have a face to face meeting with the CEO until the decision was already made is terrible. Hopefully the company goes belly-up prior to Duluth getting any kind of ROI.

Cincinnati: Local Media News & Discussion
Yeah this really sucks. The Sound is not exactly the most alternative station, but it is pretty standard fare for what is called alternative in today's radio. They did do a good job of mixing old and new with a lot of variety as well as periodic nods to local artists so I will miss that. I concur that woxy.com is worth a try, although it seems to have gotten a little more dance tracky. It seems like 94.1 is already slowly feeling the void, but we'll see. It is still a little too much pop and soft (ala The Fray, urp), and 96 Rock is still too hard. Maybe Cumulus will step up to fill the space.

Kind of off-topic, but I think you are referring to the Metro. We used to go in the mid-eighties for the drag show downstairs and the great dance music upstairs - New Order was at their peak around then. Plus they had chalk to draw and write on the walls, which was always entertaining.

Cincinnati: Downtown: The Banks
Hofbrauhaus would be a perfect fit, and I definitely would not mind that being part of the mix. Something with a beer garden would be great for that location. I think many of the earlier opinions can easily be found to be true with a little research but no big deal.

Cincinnati: Population Trends
I did not see these numbers for Cincinnati anywhere, but an increase of 146,000 since 2000 is not too bad. It seems like we can match last decade's increase (165,000), and if we can start seeing an increase in net domestic immigration (from a small negative number) the metro will be in good shape: Cincinnati-Middletown, OH-KY-IN 2008 2,155,137 2007 2,143,824 2006 2,119,959 2005 2,101,215 2004 2,082,796 2003 2,065,531 2002 2,049,629 2001 2,035,394 2000 2,014,615 (July)

Ohio unemployment numbers
^ Exactly what I was thinking - some people are probably getting very discouraged.

Cincinnati: Corryville: Vernon Manor Redevelopment
I sure hope not - I have no inside knowledge, but it still seemed to be doing a good business. Even people staying there that were interviewed said it was busy so I always wonder if there was some mismanagement in these situations. I guess they have no reason to lie, but maybe an angel investor will step up. It definitely cannot sit empty.

Cincinnati: Corryville: Vernon Manor Redevelopment
Wow this is sad - prior to getting into an official career I waited tables in the dining room and worked banquets there in the early 90's. This is a great building, and I have a lot of fond memories. That was a good time because the Rainman crew had just been there two years earlier and the Joe Pesci movie Public Eye actually had on-site auditions and that crew also stayed there - people seemed excited to work there. They always did a great dinner and banquet business, and most of the Bogart's performers stayed there as well as all the families, doctors etc. in town for hospital stays or conferences. One of the best settings in the city is when they did rooftop happy hours, which provided some great views.

That is an awesome map - what is going on with West Virginia, which seems to be doing surprisingly well? I would not have predicted that.

Cincinnati: General Business & Economic News
Fifth Third is actually hiring locally - I am not sure where they end up eventually although being bought seems to be a possibility. I still think the Old Kent market is really hurting them. While being bought would suck the job cuts do not seem to hurt the local market too much once a bank reaches a certain size (looking at US Bank in Cincy and Chase in Columbus). Overlap obviously would come into play, and we additionally do not know when we've hit bottom until after the fact. The January unemployment numbers are posted by the way and one interesting nugget is that the city's unemployment at 8% is actually lower than the metro's rate of 8.4%. I am sure that is not happening anywhere in the state (maybe Columbus), but that would be an interesting topic to research. The home county (Hamilton) is actually at 7.7%, which seems to fit the normal pattern and is doing relatively well within the metro. I am concerned about what the February numbers will look like and think the early predictions of the national economy reaching 10% were a little modest. Ohio already has two metros at a ridiculous unemployment rate of over 13%, and we probably have at least 6 months until these numbers bottom out.

^ Part of me says you are full of baloney, but upon review I think you have valuable insight as usual. On a side note, did you pass AP English as a 15 year old? Whether I agree with your opinion or not, you have a certain eloquence that says I am experienced and 50, not street-smart and 30. I have to remember to not type too late - my initial statement sounds a little harsher now but I am glad no offense was taken.
