Ohio Census / Population Trends & Lists
Nice perspective edale. I was honestly startled by the number. Hopefully we have bottomed out, but I have read some predictions that the bottom will be closer to 250k - who knows at this point? The city is making good moves now, and they really need to get the streetcar built to add to the draw. I think I mentioned this a couple of years ago, but Cincinnati and Dayton could eventually benefit from a "bounce back" effect. Butler County is at 368k and Warren is over 200k. With the types of retail developments and lawn sizes being built in these counties I can't imaging them holding more than 500k. In the case of Warren County I also wonder how much further out people will live. Since the metro is continuing to grow people will have to go somewhere, and the cities could possibly pick up some urban dwellers. At the very least Hamilton and Montgomery county should benefit. The lesson for older cities is that if you do not expand your boundaries you lose - Atlanta is one of the few bucking this trend. One small positive is that the city of Hamilton actually grew.

^^ Nice - I had no idea she was here. BTW I totally remember when the story about the Charlie Sheen party broke. We used to joke that Rob Dibble was lucky to get out alive - his personality at the time just seemed like he wouldn't know how to handle the excess, and I could see him being first in line for one of Heidi's girls. Charlie is obviously way out there now, but I was glad that a Dayton boy stayed loyal to his baseball team.

Evan Rachel Wood is now here - she and Ryan Gosling apparently made a visit to the zoo yesterday. Hopefully they left with a good impression.

^^ Cool - I was glad to hear they were filming in Northside. It sounds like Paul Giamatti has joined Clooney and Ryan Gosling. No signs of Marisa Tomei.....

University of Cincinnati Bearcats Basketball Discussion
Cronin might have had a job saving week - UC has quietly beaten #16 Louisville and #11 Georgetown (on the road). Man I hope he is finally on his way getting Bearcat basketball back where it belongs.

So has anyone seen any stars or filming around town? I am certainly not going out of my way, but I saw the crew while driving through Mt. Lookout Square, and last week I saw them downtown filming on the skywalk between Macy's and Tower Place. It was nice to see the hundreds of stargazers lining 5th St. on top of the bustling city streets. I do enjoy them showing up in familiar places and hopefully other films soon follow.

Cincinnati Streetcar / The Connector News
In the article Mayor Mallory makes reference to a defeat of the streetcar in November being a waste, estimating $50 million will have already been spent. Are the odd bedfellows not pushing for a May ballot measure? I thought they were still considering this, although if it is the only ballot item they would have to answer to that cost.

The Enquirer had an article on Clooney's new film "Ides" and had a link to films shot here. I have not seen this listed before, but here they are, since 1987: http://www.filmcincinnati.com/Shot_Here/

I did not see it, but apparently Natalie Portman gave a shout out to her grandma in Cincy on the Golden Globes during her acceptance speech. I know she has been here multiple times visiting her in Hyde Park, but this is the first time I have heard her mention this publicly.

Cincinnati Streetcar / The Connector News
Has anyone heard if the opposition is going to try to get signatures for a May ballot issue? On January 4th it was reported they had about 30 days to get them, but they were still deciding. I might have missed an update, but I am hoping they are not trying for some sort of under the radar campaign to surprise the backers. Considering it would cost the city $400k just for this issue it would seem somewhat hypocritical.

University of Cincinnati Bearcats Basketball Discussion
Overall a disappointing game losing by 11, and hopefully they can learn. The team looked tight in the first half and fell behind big. At least they played better in the second half.

Cincinnati: Downtown: The Banks
I am not sure there is a correlation with radio stations and current tastes - I think they just try to locate in developments/places where they think they can draw a lot of people. Definitely not my bag though. This is an interesting array of locations: Las Vegas Oklahoma City Tulsa Mesa, AZ Auburn Hills, MI St. Louis Park, MN Denver Foxborough, MA Cincinnati

Tomorrow (correction) will be especially tough considering they are not playing downtown - this will be at their little on-campus arena. Villanova rarely loses in this building.

Cincinnati Streetcar / The Connector News
Just to add to this it is correct that SLC was really trying to prepare for the Olympics. Having been there many times its streets are ridiculously wide, and it definitely does not have the vibrancy of downtown Cincy. It almost feels suburban. That being said you can clearly see what rail has down for the CBD as well as The U (University of Utah) and connecting those areas. While metro Cincy continues to grow, this would be one more tool to get more of that growth in the center city. I just cannot see how this would not work here.

Can UC take another step toward relevancy in one of the best rivalries in college basketball? This would definitely help after just getting back in the top 25. UC has a large overall lead in the series, but X has been dominating it lately. They are definitely going to have plenty of other opportunities considering a third of the top 25 is Big East teams.

It's about time Clooney brought some crews hear, and it would be nice if they could get back to the action we had in the last 80's and early 90's. If only Spielberg would bring some movies back home. This movie does have quite a cast and sounds like it could be a good one.

Cincinnati: Oakley: Oakley Station
I have little faith in Vandercar creating something special, but if they bring additional residential I will be happy. This area also really needs a new cinema - how bad can they screw that up? I know I shouldn't ask. One interesting thing is that for as crappy as the previous development was that Target seems to do an amazing amount of business.

Cincinnati Bengals Discussion
Well I would say that Dallas is a large market, the team gets tons of exposure, and the franchise has won 5 Super Bowls. That might explain it. I just do not think there are a lot of people with no ties to Cleveland that decide to be Browns fans. I know a lot of Cleveland fans here, including about 75 at my company, but they have all relo'd from the Cleveland area.

Cincinnati Bengals Discussion
It was city vs city way before my reply, and I did not compare Cleveland to Cincy. I was simply stating what seems to be a reasonable explanation for the large number of Browns' clubs outside of Cleveland. I guess I thought the numbers might even be bigger.

Cincinnati Bengals Discussion
Oh the losses were much worse in the 70's - it is relatively stable now. And to clarify Cincy has gained metro population using a fixed set of counties, not simply by adding them.

Both teams are sad, but I would expect the Browns Backers to be bigger than 80K based on the net domestic out-migration since 1990 alone. It's more than 230K - totals in final column: MSA: Cleveland-Elyria-Mentor, OH 1991 2,117,512 0.7 15,305 41,419 25,500 1,175 -9,325 1992 2,131,036 0.6 13,524 32,892 20,716 2,017 -8,110 1993 2,140,398 0.4 9,362 32,152 20,814 2,068 -11,136 1994 2,146,303 0.3 5,905 30,883 21,519 1,699 -12,018 1995 2,150,203 0.2 3,900 29,993 21,633 2,134 -10,016 1996 2,153,598 0.2 3,395 29,660 21,221 2,287 -10,534 1997 2,152,676 0.0 -922 29,167 21,620 2,018 -14,360 1998 2,151,568 -0.1 -1,108 29,005 21,047 1,850 -14,757 1999 2,149,943 -0.1 -1,625 29,107 21,526 1,937 -12,918 2000 2,148,143 -0.1 -1,800 - - - - 2001 2,144,528 -0.2 -3,615 35,572 26,680 4,742 -18,186 2002 2,140,552 -0.2 -3,976 26,967 21,691 3,561 -13,552 2003 2,136,026 -0.2 -4,526 26,724 21,296 3,015 -13,703 2004 2,128,958 -0.3 -7,068 26,728 21,701 2,853 -14,629 2005 2,118,249 -0.5 -10,709 25,816 21,591 2,959 -17,708 2006 2,106,336 -0.6 -11,913 25,968 20,505 3,262 -20,235 2007 2,099,185 -0.3 -7,151 25,600 20,771 2,865 -15,237 2008 2,094,051 -0.2 -5,134 25,461 20,435 2,839 -13,502 2009 2,091,286 -0.1 -2,765 25,255 20,567 2,826 -10,191
