  1. I find it very interesting that K&D chose to use the original recessed entry doors on E. 9 as well as posting the 1717 sign right over the acid rain marble etched with "EAST OHIO GAS" letters still showing behind the new 1717 sign. Yah, inside we have nice digs. Outside, ehhh...About a year ago the recessed doors on E 9. were a major homeless area and covered in Sh*t and P*ss. I hope things will be different now... Optimistically, I guess this is how change happens. In the end, this is my day-time territory and I want it to be pulsating with urban life...
  2. OK, this is going to age me badly - I have a plan to visit Amsterdam on my 50th birthday in 2017... If I could make a direct flight from Cleveland, it would probably be better than, ummm, well, I won't say...

Equillibrius - unfortunately, I don't think the fireworks will ever return to Edgewater. It was a safety issue - the surrounding streets got so crowded that safety vehicles could not get in/out. I used to live on Baltic Ave back when the fireworks were at Edgewater and the couple 4th of July's I experienced there were like nothing else I've ever seen...
  4. So there is no lighting in the new shelters? How about digital signage showing times until next bus arrives? No glass in the shelters? Parts of Clifton Blvd dug up to replace a 100ft section with new pavement - why? Yeah, nice looking structures, but watching the construction process, these things will be looking like crap in about five years. The whole thing feels like a high school project gone wrong. My opinion, this is bureaucracy at its best. Very very disappointing. Furthermore, the progress of this thing is ridiculous [Lakewood portion only]. This project was started last Autumn and progress has been snail paced through the Summer of 2014. Every morning and afternoon, during my commute I carefully watch for progress. Rarely do I see anything. I wish I could understand how projects like this work...
  5. I love this conversation...I wonder over and over if we gained or lost with the Terminal complex...In the end, I thing I would have preferred that we left the hundreds of old brick buildings in place and didn't have the Terminal complex [as much as I love the Terminal complex]. The smaller brick buildings were much more manageable and fitting for the population we have in Cleveland in 2014. I think Cleveland overbuilt during the Golden age and a low rise older brick city would have been better. But alas, it is what it is and we have the monstrosity of the Terminal complex with no residential... Just like most other things in Cleveland, I think this one went the wrong way...
  6. Yeah, this little section of Rockwell is and will for our lifetimes be a wasted urban space, best left to parking. The EXTREMELY oppressive Federal Reserve building to the South guarantees this...Let it go to reality, parking will have to happen somewhere and this is the perfect spot. I have friends who used to park in this garage and reported very negative experiences. We have nowhere to go but up.... Ironically, this was originally originally the location of the Cleveland Press building - A Major freaking fortress that was unceremoniously destroyed and replaced by the current 3rd rate parking structure...but hey, that is how things work.
  7. I went on a Walsh tour last Summer for the bridge construction and it was definitely a first class experience - looking forward to some photos!
  8. Darn KJP - Yeah this is an awesome photo, but it ruins my night when I see what was destroyed to make way for the Innerbelt and Gateway... I've seen this one before and seeing it again is like revisiting a nightmare...
  9. Looks like you had some fun MayDay! Thanks for the great shots of Cleveland!
  10. For the Lakewood portion of this project, the number of trees that have been chopped down and the amount of grass that has been paved over for this project is truly ridiculous.
  11. Too bad someone like Nationwide Realty in Columbus doesn't own all the parking lots in WHD. I just happened to end up in Grandview Yard in Columbus a few weeks ago and it is very clear that Nationwide knows how to pull off an urban project on a grand scale...
  12. May 28 is going to be an interesting Walnut Wednesday - I'll be very curious to see how the film crews in the area deal with the huge crowds...All day Tuesday, May 27, hired security guards restricted access to Perk Park and the intersection of Chester/E12 for the filming of a movie. Am I out of line being irritated that I can't walk across a public park because a Hollywood movie is being filmed?
  13. Crazy storm moving over Lakewood
  14. Summit Street, thank you for this incredible set. I love the tall old narrow buildings. This type of architecture has been almost completely obliterated in Cleveland and it is really cool to see that it still exists in a nearby city. Excellent work.
  15. Well Summit Street - you have presented a legendary 3-set of photos of Cincy. I'm a Cleveland boy and have never been to Cincy. The differences between these two Ohio cities are mind boggling. I know Cinci was settled and founded a bit before Cleveland, but the amount of 1800's architecture that remains intact in Cinci vs. Cleveland is amazing. Cleveland, through several different paths, has destroyed much of its 1800's architecture. I look forward to visiting Cincy some day to admire the 1800's architecture. Thank you for this inspiring set.
  16. My view of the 1717 Building from the Oswald Centre. On this unusually sunny morning [May 6, 2014], I could see right into most of the floors. If you look closely, you can see the framing on each floor. They have been hauling dry wall into the building like CRAZY over the past couple weeks - now they need to get to work hanging that drywall...
  17. Walked by construction site at lunch today to see a major flurry of activity. Exciting to see everything coming together here. Checking the Westin site this evening, they are advertising an opening on May 15 and allowing booking of rooms. I would have guessed rooms would be close to $300. Bookings seem to be at $200... http://www.starwoodhotels.com/westin/property/overview/index.html?propertyID=3760
  18. Walking through this project last Friday at Noon with a co-worker who 'kinda' gets the urban/city concept. East 9th and Euclid were packed with traffic, construction was going on all around us and we were walking under the covered sidewalk from the Schofield project: My co-worker says "I feel like I'm in New York City!" Looking around and using a little imagination, I was there too... The corner of East 9th/Euclid is going to be something glorious [again]. I love watching this transformation.
  19. I used to work in the boarded up building [Lincoln Building] across from the Westin. Based on my experiences, it will be boarded up for a very very long time.
  20. As a building preservationist and rock climbing enthusiast that lives in Lakewood, I can barely contain my excitement over this bold proposal.
  21. Pulling the crappy metal covering off this building, restoring the gorgeous brick color, reinstalling historically sensitive windows... I feel like I'm living in some fantasy world where historic buildings are treated with care instead of being destroyed...in Cleveland! Walking back to my office around 7:30PM last night, after screening a movie at CIFF, I stopped at E9/Euclid. The corner was deserted - just me and the Schofield. I looked into the future and tried to picture this corner one year from now...I can't wait!
  22. We're very lucky in NE Ohio to have one of the premier Green Burial parks available. I am slated to go here: http://www.foxfieldpreserve.org/ I want to be laid directly into the ground and left to a natural decay. The thought of having my body drained of blood [which is dumped into the public sewer - research if you don't believe] and pumped full of embalming fluid is sickening.
  23. Hehe, yeah w28th, every historic photo of Cleveland I look at I think the same thing... We once had world class historic architecture and most of it is in a landfill now.
  24. Amazingly this was the 4th bridge at this location. Here is a nice view of the construction of Rocky River Bridge #4, with bridge #3 in the background. I love the chicks in dresses fishing in the river. The 3rd & 2nd bridges are documented in photos, the first bridge has no known photos.
  25. Yes DM4, you have come to the same realization I did about a year ago... We have lost an amazing amount of VERY significant architecture along Superior. I don't want to sound like too much of a freak, but this post is an example of the nightmares that I see every time I drive down Superior - I see the original buildings - I know where they all were - and it makes me incredibly sad.... I would strongly argue that 100 years ago we had buildings that would have rivaled world class architecture in Brussels, London and many other European cities, but it was all destroyed...Superior Avenue of 100 years ago was truly amazing. Now we have parking lots and dubious high-rises...
