Miscellaneous Ohio Political News
I'd probably support the commission proposal referenced here. 55% and 60/88 counties seems reasonable. I'm voting no on issue 1 as I think it goes too far, but I do think there's a decent philosophical case for a more moderate version of this law. Issue 1 as written seems nakedly political in its timing and unrealistic in many of its specifics, so I'm not supporting it. My vote would likely flip with a bit of moderation, normal election timing, and I think any vote threshold should apply equally to citizen or representative proposed amendments.

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
I'm not sure there's much of a difference between following and chasing if you're in a police car. Once the alleged criminals realize the police are following them if they don't pull over they're probably going to speed up. (and if they're already joyriding at 3x-4x the speed limit, my money's on speeding up). Agreed, the stupid punk lawlessness (like the dirt-bike / fourwheeler joyrides) creates an atmosphere that suggests breaking the law is okay. That can lead to more, and more serious, crime. It also makes the city feel unsafe (even if it isn't necessarily). And there are lots of things that are illegal that may not make anyone less safe, but can certainly degrade the quality of life of everyone living in the city, all of these contribute to the same culture of lawlessness.

Cars & Vehicles Discussion (History, etc)
It sounds like what you're describing is up selling, and while it's real, it's not unique to the auto industry. If there was demand that could be reasonably satisfied, one of the auto companies would move to meet that demand. While this is likely true, it's also a bit silly. Applying this logic to the rest of the economy, and no one but the uber rich would ever buy a house (condo) ever again. While I agree that a monthly payments do a decent job of hiding costs, the people who don't see through this tend to have pretty bad credit, and will struggle to get large loans anyway. I think the more compelling answer is that the people who would be buying cheap new cars, buy used cars instead. Honestly that's probably better anyway, as it greatly extends the life of the car. Less waste and all that.

As a 20 something and someone who expressed mild reservations about these marquees I'm also curious why you implied that these might be designed to appeal more to the youth than older generations. I confess to having no idea what youth appeal in a theater marquee would even mean.

I don't mind the color, the coordination or the design. I just don't like the material. It looks like plastic (probably because it is, but if it's not it doesn't matter, because it looks like it is). It looks cheap. If these had the same design and colors but looked metallic or stone I'd like them a lot better.

- Cleveland: Downtown: Tower at Erieview & Galleria Renovation
Looks like Erieview Tower is seeking more tax credits... Cleveland considers commercial tax abatement for Erieview Tower makeover, anchored by W hotel The city of Cleveland could take the unusual step of providing commercial tax abatement for the Tower at Erieview, a struggling downtown office tower set to house Ohio's first W hotel. The proposal, outlined in legislation introduced to Cleveland City Council on Wednesday, July 12, calls for a 75% tax break for 10 years on new real estate value created by the 210-room hotel, revamped office space, a renovated parking garage and a high-end restaurant. The $193 million project, to resuscitate downtown's fourth-tallest building, also will include 227 apartments. And owner James Kassouf, who leads an investor group that acquired the property in 2018, plans to revive the adjoining Galleria mall with entertainment and dining in a subsequent phase of construction. https://www.crainscleveland.com/real-estate/cleveland-eyes-commercial-tax-abatement-erieview-tower- Cleveland: Lakefront Development and News

Is there any remaining momentum, any at all, for the Green Ribbon Coalition's proposal? https://www.greenribbonlakefront.org/projects/gordonpark/ Edit: Further edit: If this was ever done this Park would be larger than edgewater without even considering the nature preserve.- Electric Cars
Source? Or is this just not per Capita? We have 65% more people than 1965 (and 77% from 1960), consumption per Capita looks to be about flat from the mid 1960's and has been on a consistent downward trend this millennium. https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/per-capita-energy-use?tab=chart&time=earliest..2021&country=~USA https://www.worldometers.info/world-population/us-population/- Cleveland: Streetscape Improvements

My understanding of the plan is that E18th is designed to reduce car traffic running down the new boulevard. That's also why it jogs so far East, it allows the exit ramp to function as a joint exit for E18 and the new boulevard. (Straight through the light to E18, or right onto the new boulevard). I understand that people on this forum probably aren't happy with that line of thinking, but I think reducing car traffic for the main section of this boulevard will help make it more pedestrian friendly between E9 and W3, which is the important section. It's a pragmatic approach.- The Future of America and Its Cities
I love how one of the first rules you learn in any statistics class is that you can't extrapolate outside of the data range, because you can't just assume current trends will continue, but it's still so commonly done. The above example is particularly egregious, but people often take more complex projections (such as UN population projections) as gospel, despite suffering from the same fundamental error. To put it in perspective, if we ran this same simulation in 1920, I doubt it would have predicted 2000 very well. For instance Cleveland had 42% growth over that time period! A projection at that time would have predicted tens of million of people in Cleveland in 2000, in reality, we only have about 2 million, double our 1920 population. It looks like those are in planter boxes? That seems unnecessary and bad in this instance. (It's understandable near Tower City where everything is literally a bridge). There aught to be plenty of space to plant tall trees into the ground where the roots can expand. Hopefully these don't end up being planter box trees, nice trees would do a lot for this street. There's little to no greenery there right now.- Cars & Vehicles Discussion (History, etc)
I'm continuously surprised there isn't a market for more economically priced new vehicles. One of my co workers bought a new car for $16,000 just a year or two ago. It's about as cheap as you can go (manual windows for instance), but apparently there isn't much demand for cheap new vehicles, as that model (Chevy Spark I believe) has been discontinued. I'm pretty sure the robust used vehicle market just outcompetes the cheap new vehicle market, but I'm sort of surprised there aren't more people who just want a new car they can rely on for a few years, without all the bells and whistles.- Cleveland: Downtown: Ten60 Bolivar Apartments
- Suburban Sprawl News & Discussion
I don't see how this tweet has anything to do with suburban sprawl. Losing religion is a worldwide trend, and is if anything faster in our more urbanized European peers. What connection do you see between the crisis of faith described in this unlinked article and suburban sprawl? Historically church attendance has been highest in more rural areas, so I don't see it as plausible that sprawl is causing this drop in attendance.- Cleveland: Random Development and News

I'd love to see the Landmark building converted to Residential, and the bus terminal seems like a good idea. I just hope they finish that blank wall, and in the same style as the original building. No need for a modern reinterpretation or anything like that. Even unfinished the Landmark building is one of the prettiest buildings in town, hopefully that blank wall is finally dealt with.- Northeast Ohio: Regionalism News & Discussion
Your snark isn't helpful or appreciated. I think it's best we try to be respectful in disagreement. (And I haven't even disagreed with you!) My understanding of your comment is that you are comparing the total number of public sector employees across the three major Ohio Counties. That's an interesting and nuanced idea, but I wasn't able to find numbers on that. If I have time later I might look deeper through the Bureau of Labor statistics, but I've already sunk enough time looking for this information at the moment. Also, your screenshot came later, after I asked and you responded "yes," and it was to a different person, about a different topic.- Rethinking Transport in the USA
We could dig into that. I downloaded the study before I commented, but I really don't think it's worth it. It's an online poll with about 2,000 respondents. I didn't read into how they gathered respondents. I'm just not particularly concerned because we don't know how many polls they didn't release (they being the commissioner of the poll or the executer). Again, the analogy to party polls applies. Amazingly polls funded by a candidate always make that candidate look good.- Northeast Ohio: Regionalism News & Discussion
Care to share with the class? I usually don't like the "please provide a source or your argument is invalid" culture you sometimes find online, but in this instance I'm genuinely curious and spent some time looking and was not able to find anything.- Northeast Ohio: Regionalism News & Discussion
