Cleveland: Tremont: Development and News
I'm also skeptical of elevating all of the activity to a second floor patio. That said, I think there's a chance it could be really cool! It just depends on the little details and how well they interface with the Towpath. This actually reminds me of the Yours Truly in Rockside which is elevated and right off the Towpath trail. It seems to work well in that location, so it might work here as well.

I don't know, I generally opt for AirBnB over hotels for personal travel precisely because they usually don't feel like hotels. And if the home owner actually lives there they never do. The difference between charging someone to stay in my spare bedroom for a couple of days and running a hotel seems large to me. It seems like a good idea to incentive people renting out unused space in their homes. If you want to reduce sprawl renting out currently wasted space seems like a good thing. Perhaps it is reasonable to make a distinction between purely rental properties (which basically are run like businesses), and active homes. I think people should have little to no restrictions on what they can do with their homes. If no one lives regularly lives there though it's a different story.

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
I'm sorry to hear that. I hope your employee is okay. That said I don't think this discussion will be improved by an appeal to emotion. Nothing in your reply indicates you gave any thought to any part of my comment, so I'll just let this conservation die. Once again, best wishes to your employee. No one deserves to have that happen to them.

Cleveland: General Business & Economic News
There was some talk up above about potential benefits to Cleveland from Intel moving to Ohio. I thought you guys might be interested to know I saw my first evidence of that today. I was visiting Swagelok Cleveland (compression fitting, valves, etc) and they said they are building a clean room for building up tubing assemblies to the necessary specs for the semiconductor industry. Nothing huge, but this isn't a readily available capability locally now, and it's really cool to see Intel starting to have an impact. Tldr: Intel is already making an impact.

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
If police NEVER give chase, then there is nothing to discourage criminals from running away. All they have to do is remove or replace their license plates, and they are virtually guaranteed to get away with whatever it is they've done or will do. If the police give chase even 10% of the time, then the alleged criminals have something to dissuade them from running. If you only look at one interaction giving chase never makes sense, but if you look at it as a series of events and possible chase scenarios, then giving chase some of the time makes sense.

Cleveland: Downtown Parks & Public Spaces - Development/Construction
The Trust for Public Land has released their annual parkscore ratings. Very similar story to previous years. Cleveland is doing pretty well by most metrics with the notable exceptions of overall acreage and certain amenities like dog parks. https://www.tpl.org/city/cleveland-ohio

2022 U.S. Senate Race
No https://ballotpedia.org/Primary_elections_in_Ohio Winners in Ohio primary elections are determined via plurality vote, meaning that the candidate with the highest number of votes wins even if he or she did not win an outright majority of votes cast.

Interesting pro Dolan article discussing a theory that has come up here before of Dolan squeezing out a plurality win by being the least Trumpy candidate. https://www.politico.com/news/2022/04/29/trump-says-matt-dolan-is-not-fit-for-ohios-senate-seat-hes-gaining-ground-anyway-00028824

Cleveland-Akron: Bicycling Developments and News
The city of Cleveland is using their Instagram story today to promote the downtown bike loop, and to lobby for federal funding for it. Nice to see this is still being considered, I'd love to see this funded! They are also promoting Lee Road revitalization.

Greater Cleveland RTA News & Discussion
I've never used this system before, but just looking at the website it looks functionally equivalent to RTA's current app. Other than bundling it into the same app as other regional transit systems, does anyone know if this app will offer any other advantages to RTA's current system?

Cleveland: Public Square Redesign
They also aren't supposed to jump the curb onto the sidewalk. In either case someone has either fallen asleep at the wheel, or you're dealing with a terrorist. Agreed. My point is only that they are generally used after a curb or a buffer space and not as the first line of defense.

Cleveland: Public Square Redesign
Probably the same reason that there's a long line of them guarding the entry to Terminal Tower / Tower City. Bollards generally aren't used where cars are supposed to be, as hitting one could easily be fatal to the driver. I agree that safety concerns can sometimes veer into irrational territory, but it's not obvious to me that this was one of those cases. A malevolent person with a vehicle could easily plow through a bunch of people here absent any guarding. The ironic part is that the concern is far more valid now than when it was originally suggested, as the idea has been put into public consciousness many times through these discussions. Also, not to be that guy, but something bad would only need to happen once before we would all wish we had just spent the money on bollards. Let's just get them in and move on to the next problem.

Cleveland: Public Square Redesign
Glad to see this finally moving forward. https://www.cleveland.com/news/2022/04/cleveland-city-council-approves-swapping-jersey-barriers-with-bollards-on-public-square.html CLEVELAND, Ohio – The concrete Jersey barriers on Public Square are one step closer to removal, after Cleveland City Council on Monday approved plans to replace them with bollards that are considered to be more attractive. Council agreed to spend up to $1.5 million on the improvements, which carry a total expected price of $3 million. The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority could contribute $500,000, though its board has yet to vote on that allocation. The remaining balance is expected to be covered by fundraising efforts. ... The part that was most confusing to me, is that the article calls out "up to 80 mostly permanent steel bollards" I'm not sure how we get to that many, that seems like a lot to me. Most of the area has curbs, so where are these bollards going? Down the whole length of superior? Edit: It looks it could be 4 foot spacing following the current Jersey barrier path.

Cleveland: Flats Developments (Non-Stonebridge or FEB)
Developer aside, the renderings look really good. For the sake of Cleveland I hope this succeeds. This seems to me to be an extension of FEB, not in competition with it. I'm hoping it serves as connecting tissue to Settlers Landing and is symbiotic with all of the east bank. There is a boardwalk in the renderings, which would be huge and is alignment with the vision for the valley.

Cleveland: Public Square Redesign
Planting a mature tree is a challenging process, and I doubt they'd survive the process in a mostly paved public square. Honestly, just put in the bollards and be done with it! It's a perfectly acceptable solution that could have been done years ago. Let's not let the perfect be the enemy of the good here. I don't want more time to be wasted on finding a creative solution.

Cleveland Brewery / Beer / Alcohol News
After trying Cleveland Whiskey's flagship whiskey, I unfortunately have to agree with the above comments. It's not quite dreadful, but there are plenty of better bourbons at the price point. That said I also tried one of their Cleveland Underground varieties (the apple wood one) and I thought that was significantly better, so they seem to be moving in the right direction! I'm really happy about their success though, and I think they'll be a great anchor to the Flats South development! Can't wait to see what they build there, and I'll definitely visit when it opens!

Cleveland: Flats Developments (Non-Stonebridge or FEB)
Agreed, I love this trend and hope it continues! I hope the next trend is embracing and propping up the local music scene. Maybe I'm just missing them but there seem to shockingly few restaurants and bars in downtown and the near west side that will regularly bring in singer/songwriter type people (or bands) to play while people are eating/drinking. (Beerhead seems like it might be doing this more often on peak nights, and I know of Wilbert's, honestly I'd love it if some replied in the appropriate thread with a list) There may be an opportunity for a more musically focused district somewhere in the Flats, maybe in the west or south banks? Our own mini version of Austin's E6th street, Broadway in Nashville, or Bourbon Street in New Orleans. That is, if other restaurants/bars don't pick up on the demand beforehand and start bringing in music.

Cleveland: Random Development and News
You're not wrong, but from my experience churches generally want more than a purely capitalist reason to do something like this. For instance, the church I attended during college developed some of their land into apartments, but they specifically did so as interfaith housing (it was a very liberal church). I don't see a proposal like this being too likely unless unless the developer can sell the church that the proposal aligns with their mission, whatever that is.

Cleveland: Flats Developments (Non-Stonebridge or FEB)
This should be a welcome addition! https://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/2022/04/two-story-mural-coming-to-the-foundry-in-clevelands-flats.html CLEVELAND, Ohio – Soon, the view for the Foundry Community Rowing and Sailing Center rowers who slice their way along the Cuyahoga River will become a bit more scenic. Detroit artist Pat Perry is painting a two-story tall, 150-foot mural on the Big House, one of the buildings on the Foundry’s campus in Cleveland’s Flats. Perry is scheduled to work on the art through at least Saturday, April 30. ...

2022 U.S. Senate Race
Good write up, but as Brian said, you're being overly optimistic. Ohio went +8 to Trump in a Biden +4 national environment. This year is not going to be +4 for the Democrats nationally, so this race is really on the Republicans to lose. Mandel might just be able to do it, as others have pointed out he's very unlikeable, and comes across as unhinged. The rest of the field aren't exactly strong candidates, but can likely skate through by virtue of having an R by their name. (Also, I REALLY don't think being Jewish matters to 95+% of Republican voters. The preeminent conservative pundit right now is probably Ben Shapiro, an Orthodox Jew. Other than for the crazies, being Jewish is a total non issue). Trump also turns away some would be R voters, particularly suburban women. The worst case scenario for Dems is the Virginia scenario, where the Maga vote comes out, but Trump stays out of the spotlight, and doesn't drive away the Suburban vote. Trump sure likes the spotlight though, so I doubt he will. Also, I think Trump went with Vance because he's a pseudo celebrity. Similar to why he's backing Oz in PA. Smart choice or not, Trump is clearly drawn to celebrity.

2022 U.S. Senate Race
^ My interpretation of that tweet is that Trump views Mandel as a candidate that could lose in November, even with a Republican tilted landscape. He's likely right. I think Mandel is the only (R) candidate who could lose this November.

Cleveland: Downtown: Tower City / Riverview Development
I really like the hostel idea! It would be on the small end for a hostel, but it has great potential for supporting people biking into Cleveland for a night out, as well as just generally looking for a cheap place to stay downtown.

Canal Basin Park and Lake Link Trail
When is this image from? Because it seems like the proposed park area keeps changing. I believe most of the southern riverbank is now (sadly) excluded from the plan.
