The Official *I Love Cleveland* Thread
Posted in the Forum section of today's PD, a female artist had a blog where she is planning on sketching for 100 days, things that she loves above cleveland. Four years ago, Julia Kuo moved from Los Angeles to Cleveland. To her surprise, she quickly fell in love. Like most people swept up by romance, she wanted the whole world to know why she was always walking around with a grin on her face for no apparent reason. At 25, she is a talented artist who has already illustrated several children's books and numerous stories for The New York Times. Her heart speaks through her art, and so it made sense -- to her, anyway -- to start posting online sketches of her beloved. http://www.cleveland.com/schultz/index.ssf/2011/06/sketches_capture_clevelands_be.html her blog: http://juliaincleveland.tumblr.com/

Construction Update - 5/26/11 Project Updates :: May 26, 2011 http://www.clevelandmedicalmartonline.com/clevelandmedicalmart/index.cfm/news/construction-update-52611/ The temporary construction ramp being constructed will extend from the Exhibit hall floor to Lakeside Avenue. I would have thought the current drive next to the MM would be the only in and out drive.

Cleveland urban exploration
I do give you explorers props for entering these dilapidated structures to take pictures. They are sad examples of urban decay but there is an opportunity for art photography which is always very cool.

Cleveland: Flats East Bank
I disagree. In my opinion all the other entertainment districts are doing just fine. This just creates another destination. Duplication of what venues? Restaurants? Clubs? Putting a chain restaurant or bar down there would be a duplication of venues...not proprietary restaurants or clubs.

CLEVELAND - Making an observation
Check out the May addition of Properties Magazine. There is a story on the new Rosetta space and it is very nice. http://www.propertiesmag.com/cf01.htm

CLEVELAND - Making an observation
Totally agree! Good God the Stanley is in bad shape. It looks as if a stiff fart might blow that thing down....save Columbia!!

That could be but so many columns spaced closely together doesn't seem right.

What "ramp" are you referring to? Another construction entrance ramp?

Looks like they are putting in engineered fill. I wonder if it will be a mat footing. Now lets see some structure!

Peak Oil
Well if the World decides to no longer use the US Dollar as the reserve currency, the price of oil here will most likely skyrocket. So additional domestic drilling may not be a bad idea.

Cleveland: Historic Photos
what is incredible is how dirty/sooty/grimy the downtown buildings were 20-30 years ago...especially the Mall A fountain...it's practically black! Downtown Cleveland has come a LONG way from the 70's and 80's

Cleveland: Historic Photos
It's too bad the big bad Clinic had to take the place of our "second downtown" near Euclid & E. 105th.
-
Cleveland: Historic Photos
Though it would be interesting to see the grit, grime and grossness of the 70's & 80's Cleveland......I'll take pictures of the grandeur, greatness and golden age of the 1900-1930's

Access to Cleveland's Horseshoe Casino
That other part about is that four people can hop in a car and spend about $8 to park downtown. Those same people purchasing all day RTA passes adds up to $20. Doesn't make sense. Just so you know...I'd be one of the people that would rather spend the extra cheese to take the hassle free rapid.

Cleveland: Historic Photos
Man how I wish I could walk around the streets of Cleveland in 1915. Que the violin but it pains me to see how much of the beautiful architecture has been leveled for parking or new buildings. Think of all the beautiful rehabs we could have had.

Cleveland: Cleveland Museum of Art Expansion / Renovation
I had an opportunity to tour the current phase of the museum. A couple of tidbits I learned. - The weight of the atrium structure is over 1,100,000 lbs.....gee that its! - There are circulating water lines in the trusses to prevent condensation build up. - The floor of the atrium will have radiant heat piping to maintain a temperature of at least 72 deg to a level 10'-0" above the floor. - Construction still is on schedule. - When the 1958 addition was constructed, they tore into the existing north facade marble to tie-in the new structure. The quarry used for the 1916 marble was closed shortly after....however they reopened it briefly so that they could extract new pieces to closely match the existing and repair the north facade to it's original state. I thought that was pretty cool. - They have already had over 850 RFI's and had over 400 submittals to review. A few pics. They aren't the best since I used my droid but they get the job done. There will be a balcony off of the galleries that wraps around three sides of the atrium. Future 2nd floor galleries. 2nd floor corridor extending the entire building east to west. It was insane how tight all the MEP systems were installed. My favorite city on earth...just had to take a pic. I'm looking forward to visiting and seeing the entire museum when completed.

Cleveland: Public Square Redesign
A point of reference to my earlier Union Square post.

Cleveland: Public Square Redesign
I agree with the plaza idea by Urbanomics. I would envision a sort of larger version of San Francisco's Union Square or maybe two versions of it if the current PS is cut into two areas. Union Square has a large hard surface cutting throughout and with some park benches. Also added in are a few trees and stepped grassy areas to relax and maybe eat a lunch as a way to soften the hardscape. There are also a couple of retail/snack type kiosks spread throughout as well.

Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
Nice to see the MMCC website now goes a little more in depth about the pros of such a facility. One part of the first paragraph though... Designed to bring buyers and sellers together, Cleveland Medical Mart & Convention Center (Cleveland MMCC) is the world’s only facility targeted specifically to the medical and healthcare industries. Be a part of the first comprehensive marketplace to combine permanent showrooms, a Class-A exhibition hall and state-of-the-art conference facilities tailored to the needs of the medical marketplace. The one million square foot facility is expected to open in 2013. What? Since when did this become a million sf facility? http://www.clevelandmedicalmart.com/about/about-cmm/

Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
A part of me wishes the lighting along Euclid would have been the historic traditional type since it was the grand street of a bygone era. As for the MM, the more details that come out the more it grows on me. I think they went overboard on the size of the lobby however, as they really took away from the usable space on the upper floors.

Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
Really? That must be one hell of a floor. What is it imported marble from Italy or something?

Cleveland: Flats East Bank
I thought the bridge is always up and then when a train is approaching, a large belching horn toots 3 or so times and the bridge begins to lower. At least that is what I witnessed while I was down at Wendy Park. Once the train has passed it raises again. Freighter and recreational traffic just has to wait for a bit.
