  3. Yeah that was one of the more interesting/fun projects. Yes, the days of Taylor Hall...er the hampster cage.
  4. I recently came across some photos of a third year project i had to do in Architecture school. We had to design a skyscraper in downtown Cleveland. The theme was Afrocentric Architecture , which is basically architectural design derived from African culture and art. We had to choose an artifact with which to base a design. I chose this mask from the Senufo people...on the Ivory Coast of Africa. Although an odd assignment, it was a lot of fun to go through the process. The building in the photos are what i came up with. It is occupying the site what was to have the Ameritrust Center sitting on it. http://www.emporis.com/en/wm/bu/?id=103095 Looking at the design now, it seems a bit top heavy to me and i play a little too much off of the Termial Tower. But it would have been great to see a building there. The Mask -

Last wednesday, I headed downtown to take some pictures of the hoopla at the Q. I wanted to get a few pics of the area before the Cavs got swept :-(. So i decided to take a walk around town and snaps some pictures. I started at St. Claire & E. 9th, headed through the malls, over to the Q, back to the malls and down to North Coast Harbor. Then over to edgewater for the sunset, then back to the Hope Memorial bridge and Superior Viaduct for some evening shots. Enjoy.
  6. how long do the meets usually last?
  7. Where is that street with character? Never heard of a street out of wood.
  8. Photoshop is a wonderful tool. very nicely done.
  9. I agree MayDay. The waste of taxpayers money is a big issue. My only beef before was that had this been designed by some lesser known architect, and it looked the same, there might not be as much of an outcry to tear it down. The issue of sustainable design and wasting money to demolish it would be an issue regardless of who designed it though.
  10. A compromise for all would be to put a new skin on the building and renovate the interior. But doesn't the county reject that idea because the interior plan is too small and not condusive to their office needs?
  11. I'm sorry but I think a duck's ass looks better than this building. Just my opinion. I know Breuer is considered a great modernist architect, but so what. Architects become "great" based on exceptionally designed and aesthestically pleasing buildings, based on the opinions of public and architectural community of course. But not every building designed by a "great" always turns out to be an exceptional building. There are exceptions of course. Breuer I'm sure designed other buildings that propelled him to be considered a master of modernist architecture. But does that mean every building he did after those should be considered a wonderful building? I don't think so. Besides, it's not like we are talking about demolishing a neo-classical tower constructed in the 1930's or something. Although I will agree that being only 30-some years young doesn't justify the demolition of it. I am torn on the idea of demolishing it or renovating it however. I would love to see a new signature building in it's place. But it would be better if the Breuer tower was left for reuse as maybe a residential tower, as was mentioned in a previous post. I agree that is would serve Cleveland better if a new building was constructed on an existing parking lot. It is just unfortunate that the property was already purchased by the county. If only the idea of demolition was announced as a possibility before purchasing the property, they may have been able to better asses the public outcry. Maybe it was mentioned and people didn't react to it because the county didn't own it yet. I'm rambling, but the point is that yeah, just because it was designed by what is considered by many to be a great modernist architect, does that automatically consider it to be a great building?
  12. Damn!!! i always have something going on...wedding this year...Maybe i'll eventually hit one of these meets.

Great pics indeed. I visited there in 98 and really enjoyed it. Did anyone ride the subways there? The escalators down to the subway were the longest rides i've ever been on. Another note, the cars were so outdated, a reminder of how the country operated under communism.
  15. Ohio Boxboard Co. (ca. 1919), 1400 East 30th St. An example of early 20th-century industrial design and one of the few remaining buildings designed by Christian, Schwarzenberg and Gaede, an architectural firm that practiced in Cleveland from 1913 to 1972. Firm became Christian & Klopper, Inc. in 1972 and is still in business today.
  16. This is a bit off the current topic, but looking at the buildings slated for demolition by Blinker12, one caught my eye. I have the original building drawings of the Daniel's Furniture building at 2800 Superior Ave. It was constructed in 1919 for the Ohio Box Board Co. The terra cota detailing at the top is quite interesting and it would be ashame to loose it.

You definitely will not get this with digital. Although some film cameras actually have a feature to double expose a shot. It stills baffles me how this happened, but a nice suprise anyway.

Somehow I ended up with St. Augustine sp?, Florida over Euclid Avenue i think. The odd thing is that the perspectives are almost a perfect match.
  19. Lucca, Italy is an interesting city. The city is within a fortress like wall and several bell towers have trees growing on top of them.
  20. Seeing the other San Fran post reminded me of my trip three years ago there. Truely a great city.

  22. From what I can remember, it is an opaque glass deck. We crossed that on our way to see Frank Ghery's Guggenheim museum.
