Sales tax set to go up in central Ohio after voters give green light to COTA levy "Local sales tax is set to increase by a half percent after a Central Ohio Transit Authority sales tax levy passed Tuesday night. The levy will bring in an estimated $6.2 billion by 2050. COTA says it will use that money to make the LinkUS plan a reality and increase service by 45%, build the region's first rapid bus lines and fund more than 500 miles of sidewalks, bike paths and trails by 2050. 27.5% of the levy proceeds, about $60 million per year, would go toward what the ballot calls "transit-supportive infrastructure" like sidewalks, bike paths and trails. The Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission has announced the first 83 projects that would be built by 2030." The measure (with over 95% reporting) was passing 57%-43% https://www.dispatch.com/story/news/politics/elections/local/2024/11/05/election-results-2024-cota-tax-levy-bus-transportation-linkus-ohio/75797832007/

A little more about the tweaked timeline... Construction work to 'flatline' "There are about 1,700 to 1,800 construction workers on the site, and Intel has told union leaders to expect that number to remain the same for 2025, said Mike Knisley, secretary-treasurer of the Ohio State Building and Construction Trades Council. "They're going to flatline the project for the next year," he said. That would put the project on pace to be finished in 2028. It can take up to five years from groundbreaking to start making semiconductors for a typical fab, said Joe Stockunas, one of the top executives for semiconductor organization Semi." https://www.dispatch.com/story/business/2024/10/30/when-will-intels-28b-ohio-plant-open-construction-hiring-stalls/75895422007/

Construction goes vertical at Intel's $28B Ohio One site "Two years after Intel Corp. broke ground at its New Albany semiconductor manufacturing campus, construction has finally risen above ground. The California chipmaker uploaded new photos and aerial video of the $28 billion Ohio One project on Thursday, announcing construction had hit the milestone of "going vertical." "We're seeing so much activity," New Albany Community Development Director Jen Chrysler recently told Columbus Business First for an update on several ongoing projects. "We're really excited about the progress we're making there and the partnership we have with Intel." There are 2,300 construction workers and 29 cranes currently on site, according to the city. Bechtel Corp. and Gilbane Building Co. are leading construction. The largest crane on site, the second-largest model made by Liebherr, can lift 5.5 million pounds and is twice as tall as the Statue of Liberty, according to Intel. On Friday, the crane was christened "Ms. Armstrong" by fourth- and fifth-graders at Johnstown Intermediate Middle School. The 1,000-acre Intel site is within the district and Intel has partnered on several STEM education initiatives." https://www.bizjournals.com/columbus/news/2024/10/28/intel-new-albany-construction-above-grade.html

Crews remained at the scene as of 7 a.m. Fort Rapid has three main structures, including a hotel tower, the water park's indoor portion, and a third building. It appears the fire was still smoldering Monday morning in the third, westernmost building on the site closest to Hamilton Road. As walls rise at Intel's New Albany site, massive crane arrives with a new name "There are nearly 30 cranes working on Intel's $28 billion project in Licking County. None is bigger than a recent arrival, and it's sporting a new name: Ms. Armstrong. The crane, a Liebherr LR12500, is one of the biggest in the world. It will pick up the trusses from an assembly yard and put them in place on the top of the two factories Intel is building. The crane is powerful, capable of lifting up to 5.5 million pounds, and is taller than two Statues of Liberty... To date, the project has logged 5 million hours of labor, Evers said. Already, enough concrete has been poured to build four Ohio Stadiums, he said. A significant milestone has been reached in the construction in that walls and floors are starting to going in after focusing on what Evers called, "The two biggest basements in Ohio." Construction workers from 75 of Ohio's 88 counties have worked at the site, and thousands more construction workers will be coming in the future, he said." https://www.dispatch.com/story/business/energy-resource/2024/10/26/johnstown-students-pick-name-ms-armstrong-for-massive-new-intel-crane/75810571007/

Ruling clears way for Fort Rapids' conversion to affordable housing "A proposed sale of the shuttered Fort Rapids water park and hotel to an affordable housing developer came closer to going through because of a court ruling last week. California-based Drever Capital Management may close on its $6.65 million offer for the property on the far east side of Columbus following the Oct. 15 dismissal of an appeal by Jeff Oh Kern, who had unsuccessfully claimed ownership rights. The sale is expected to resolve several other pending court cases in the convoluted struggle with more twists than the park's slides. Maxwell Drever, chairman of Drever Capital, this year told Columbus Business First the firm specializes in transforming "broken hotels" into workforce housing. "We think the building is still salvageable," he said in June. The hotel could possibly be renovated into studio apartments, and the developer would "brainstorm" uses for the water park structure. Drever made its offer on Fort Rapids in 2021, but the deal has been held up by legal challenges: an earlier prospective buyer, a deed restriction, a company that bought the rights to delinquent taxes, and a fight over who actually is the current owner." https://www.bizjournals.com/columbus/news/2024/10/22/fort-rapids-court-ruling.html

New Albany: Ohio One (Intel Semiconductor Facility)
New Albany provides update on Intel "Though New Albany has a slew of notable projects, its most prominent is Intel Corp.'s $28 billion semiconductor manufacturing campus. The project started construction in July 2022 and is expected to be completed between 2026 and 2027. The plants are slated to become operational between 2027 and 2028. There are 2,300 construction workers and 29 cranes currently on site, according to the city. Chrysler said the city has completed about 75% of infrastructure work for Intel, which includes new and widened roads as well as new water and sewer lines. A convoy of "super loads" traveled along new roads constructed for Intel this summer. Those loads included a 384,000-pound air separation unit, which will join three other units Intel will use for the two factories. "We're seeing so much activity," Chrysler said. "We're really excited about the progress we're making there and the partnership we have with Intel." Intel suppliers also are starting to establish a presence in New Albany. That includes DSV, a Danish transportation and logistics company that began construction on its 1.2 million-square-foot facility in October 2023. Chrysler said DSV will begin operating at the site in early 2025." https://www.bizjournals.com/columbus/news/2024/10/14/new-albany-ohio-economic-development-projects.html

City Winery still expects to be pouring glasses and hosting shows in Columbus "The New York-based restaurant and entertainment venue announced plans to open a Columbus location at 2108 S. High St in 2022. But news on the project has been mostly quiet since then. Founder Michael Dorf this week told Columbus Business First that City Winery still is coming. "We are almost there and look forward to starting construction soon,” he wrote in an email. The project has building permits pending with the city that were filed in May. Plans in Columbus call for a fully functioning winery, a restaurant and both indoor and outdoor spaces for live music and other performances as well as private events. City Winery is part of Steelton Village, a $350 million mixed-use project that will bring more commercial and residential development to the city’s South Side. https://www.bizjournals.com/columbus/news/2024/10/11/city-winery-columbus-construction-soon.html

Congress approves bill to speed up construction of new microchip plants, including Intel facility in Ohio "The U.S. House of Representatives on Monday approved bipartisan legislation that will streamline federal reviews for microchip manufacturing facilities such as a $20 billion factory that Intel is building outside Columbus. “This legislation will help prevent delays to the semiconductor manufacturing projects the CHIPS Act made possible and will encourage future investments in American manufacturing,” said a statement from Brown. “This is critical to Intel’s project in Licking County and to ensure that we can outcompete China. The bipartisan Building Chips in America Act of 2023, whose cosponsors include U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown of Cleveland and U.S. Rep. Emilia Sykes of Akron, passed the House by a 257 to 125 margin. Since it passed the Senate unanimously in December, it now heads to President Joe Biden’s desk to be signed into law." https://www.cleveland.com/news/2024/09/congress-approves-bill-to-speed-up-construction-of-new-microchip-plants-including-intel-facility-in-ohio.html

Designed to detect the presence of distant worlds by studying tiny color changes in light from the host stars they orbit, iLocater is a next-generation spectrograph that, upon its initial completion next year, will be installed at the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT) located in Arizona. Overall, this support, which totals $4.3 million, will help improve broader exoplanet research at the LBT and advance iLocater’s hardware over the next three years. It will also allow the instrument to make detailed measurements of the sun. Under development since 2013, iLocater will be a second-generation instrument for the LBT, whose research impacts span the full range of modern astrophysics.
