Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad
So question about the piece I bolded; what does CSX have to lose? They agree to terms with CVSR to extend to Cleveland and move to over-night operations but the funding never materializes and CVSR backs out what has CSX lost? Seems like they are passing on the opportunity for upgrade rail at literally almost no risk which is...irrational. I can understand bedrock's rational, developing around a rail connection that may not happen could make for certain inefficiencies. Though I think it's worth the risk giving that if they back it I think odds would improve. And if they would back CVSR AND Amtrak returning to Tower City it would do more to revitalize the mall than almost anything I would think...

Man, your post isn't even internally consistent. "From Edgewater west it's much milder because unless the wind is coming from nearly due north it's not coming off the lake. Detroit and Chicago are similar. Even Buffalo is not directly exposed to the north winds over the water. Buffalo is due east of Lake Erie which is where you, correctly, say the wind is coming from off the lake and Buffalo famously gets huge amounts of lake effect snow.

I think it's pretty telling that Team NEO, led by Matt Dolan, didn't more firmly side with GCP--especially given that Matt's brother, Paul Dolan is the Board Chair of GCP. Maybe its the quasi-governmental status of Team NEO tempering Matt's response, but makes me think that Paul is one of the silent board members Chris and Justin referenced in their letter. I think it's also telling that the region's business journal, Crain's, is running articles questioning the economic projections of HSG, from their retail, residential, and office plan to the number of events they claim they will be able to bring.

Akron’s West Hill neighborhood is getting its ‘green space back’ by Reegan Davis Saunders May 14, 2025 More than 150 people gathered at Glendale Park, a gravel-filled lot located across the street from the Glendale Steps, for the first West Hill Wednesday event of the year. The May 7 gathering served as a preview for the reimagining of the space that will become home to West Hill’s new park. As part of a push from the Friends of Glendale Park and the West Hill Neighborhood Organization, among other community groups, the parking lot — originally intended to be a park connected to the Glendale Steps — will now be developed into a usable recreation site for Akron residents. In recent years, the site has been used as a staging area for construction related to various sewer projects across the city, said Akron Planning Director Kyle Julien. The city now plans to spread grass seed on the site and is considering planting a wildflower meadow on the corner near Glendale Cemetery. https://signalakron.org/akron-west-hill-neighborhood-is-getting-its-green-space-back-park/

$16.5 million settlement reached in Cuyahoga Valley National Park paper mill cleanup Published: May. 14, 2025 By Adam Ferrise, cleveland.com CLEVELAND, Ohio — The former owners of a paper mill that’s now located inside the Cuyahoga Valley National Park agreed to pay $16.5 million to settle a dispute with the federal government over who was responsible for the site’s environmental cleanup. Paddock Enterprises, a successor to a company that owned the Jaite Mill property before the government bought it in 1985, initially sued in 2022, arguing that it shouldn’t be held responsible for the $45 million the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency had initially sought for remediation of the site. The agreement calls for Paddock to pay $33 million to the government and for the government to reimburse Paddock $16.5 million. The settlement requires U.S. District Judge Sara Lioi’s approval. https://www.cleveland.com/court-justice/2025/05/165-million-settlement-reached-in-cuyahoga-valley-national-park-paper-mill-cleanup.html

Lakewood: Development and News
The article ends on an interesting point. The Grant building and East Rockport School was sold back in 2018 to Liberty Development Company for $500,000. The school board chose Liberty because they were the only developer who didn't propose tearing down the 1899 building and instead wanted to renovate the buildings into a mixed use space. Liberty's Vice President of Development, Dru Siley, was formerly Lakewood's Development Director. In the seven years that Liberty has owned the buildings the city has extended multiple tax incentives to redevelop the site, including a 75% commercial tax abatement and creating a TIF district at the property to reimburse Liberty for energy efficient renovations. Apparently those incentives weren't enough for Liberty to get the project across the finish line, in seven years, and in December Siley told City Council they would consider changing the plan to be exclusively office spaces if they could find enough commercial tenants. Evidently Lakewood City may end up being that commercial tenant for Liberty... Something seems off about this series of events... Did Liberty make a proposal for the Roundstone HQ? Goodbye Lakewood City Hall? Mayor to pitch council on move to historic site Published: Apr. 18, 2025 By Cory Shaffer, cleveland.com LAKEWOOD, Ohio -- Lakewood Mayor Meghan George on Monday will propose moving the city out of the 70-year-old City Hall on Detroit Avenue and into the historic school board site on Warren Road. ... The city last year began a review of the current City Hall. That review found that the space, particularly the police department, was outdated and lacked sufficient facilities for the rising number of female officers. The cost to renovate the building to modernize the police department alone would cost $10 million, the city said in December. ... Under the proposal, the city would allow the police department and municipal court to stay in the current building and expand their footprints. The city would also sell the annex building that houses the tax department and move all city departments into a single building. https://www.cleveland.com/metro/2025/04/goodbye-lakewood-city-hall-mayor-to-pitch-council-on-move-to-historic-site.html

This is a nice addition to Public Square. I hope Destination Cleveland is right and it facilitates people spending more time there into the evening. I would think if people are used to going to and spending time in Public Square when it's nice it'll make the Winter Lights in December that much more popular. I still would like them to go further and close Public Square to personal autos for a truly pedestrian space. RTA buses only and food trucks.
