Ohio LGBTQ+ News
Did you actually read the original article though? Because it is fairly hard to argue that its just some Republican back benchers that aren't guiding legislation or policy when you see some of the individuals who were included in the discussion. And you can say that the legislature wont go to this extent, but they did just overwhelmingly override a veto from a member of their own party, even after he signed executive orders as a compromise but it wasn't enough for the Republican legislature. So all signs are pointing towards this being where the Ohio Republican legislature is headed. And I will make this super simple for you. Here is the relevant section. I'll even bold it for you. You're welcome in advance. https://ohiocapitaljournal.com/2024/01/29/michigan-and-ohio-gop-legislators-discuss-endgame-of-banning-all-trans-health-care/

Want to see improvements to North Main Street in Akron? Here’s how to give feedback Published: Jan. 25, 2024 By Megan Becka, special to cleveland.com AKRON, Ohio – Akron is asking community members to weigh in as it moves forward with creating plans for several roadway safety improvements on North Main Street between the All-America Bridge and the High-Level Bridge over the Gorge (northern city limit). The city has partnered with the Environmental Design Group on the safety improvement projects, which were first shared during the Akron Better Block initiative in 2015. The projects are the culmination of years of study and public engagement, and focus on making the road safe for all users, particularly pedestrians and bicyclists, according to the city. Per the National Environmental Policy Act, the city is seeking comments from the public about the social, environmental and economic impacts of the proposed project. Community members can share their feedback online or in person on Feb. 3 at 11 a.m. at the North Hill library branch, 183 E. Cuyahoga Falls Ave. During the meeting, Environmental Design Group will share the proposed projects and seek comments from community members. https://www.cleveland.com/akron/2024/01/want-to-see-improvements-to-north-main-street-in-akron-heres-how-to-give-feedback.html

Another Akron office building up for sale. From what was stated in the article it sounds like the current office leases are stable and it is a diverse mix at about 55% occupancy. So if residential conversion is in the PNC Center's future, I would expect it wouldn't be a full conversion. Though, as yanni pointed out, there's a lot for sale in downtown Akron at the moment. CLEVLOT website and tool aims to streamline the process of repurposing Cleveland’s vacant land BY JENNA THOMAS JANUARY 24, 2024 It’s not often that educational panel discussions are standing room only, but that was the case last month when experts weighed in on the future of the Cleveland Land Bank at a forum at Cleveland State University’s Levin College of Public Affairs and Education. Why so much interest in vacant land? Well, for one thing, there’s a lot of it. In fact, according to presenters at the forum, the city’s vacant lots could cover three airports, with a combined 30,000 lots spanning 6,000 acres. That works out to about one-eighth of the city. Be sure to bring out that handy fact next time you’re trying to sell your in-laws on moving here (or not). ... Now, Mayor Justin Bibb’s administration is trying to reform the land bank to make it more responsive to the needs of individual neighborhoods and more effective at repurposing land. Their main tool for doing so is called CLEVLOT, or the Cleveland Vacant Land Opportunity Tool. CLEVLOT is a website and online tool aimed at helping people search for and buy vacant land in the city (if you’re interested in learning more, fill out this contact form or call 216-250-2638). As the room filled and CSU staff dragged out stacks of additional chairs, it quickly became apparent that there was a deep and widespread interest in making better use of the city’s empty land. https://thelandcle.org/stories/clevlot-website-and-tool-aims-to-streamline-the-process-of-repurposing-clevelands-vacant-land/

That's right, the article says the $49M paid by FE was to buyout the remaining 6 years of their 10-year lease. Though it sounds like they are still selling at a discount, Summit County property records show an appraised value of $18.4M. Understandably, it sounds like FE would like to just unload the property.

FirstEnergy selling 19-story downtown Akron headquarters, consolidating operations Eric Marotta Jan. 23, 2024 A fixture in downtown Akron for more than 40 years is up for sale as FirstEnergy Corp. works to move its operations to the west side of town. FirstEnergy is selling its 19-story office tower at 76 S. Main Street, seeking $15 million for the property it purchased in December for around $49 million. In 2019, the company signed a 10-year lease extension with building owner McKinley Inc., which would have kept the headquarters downtown until 2035. Cleveland: Random Development and News
According to the article I shouldn't be surprised that Cleveland is in the top ten, but is that right? I know we were an early adopter of office-to-residential conversions, but but that only means we've been at it longer than other cities, reducing the available square footage of potential conversions. We also had less office space than cities like NYC and LA to begin with and now that those cities are seeing lower demand for office space they're starting to convert too. Akron: Summit Lake Developments and News
2 pieces of news here, one a bit older but I think more exciting; (1) Signal's Akron newsroom has opened and started reporting stories! And (2) Akron continues to reform it's zoning code and expands form-based zoning to the eastside of Summit Lake. Summit Lake residents respond to proposed zoning changes by Kevin Dilley and Akron Documenters January 19, 2024 [City Planner Daniel] DeAngelo said that zoning across the city needs to be updated and that officials have moved to form-based zoning, which was approved last year and unveiled in plans for the Merriman Valley in July and approved in December. DeAngelo said the city wants to align zoning regulations with usage. In Summit Lake, that means providing more flexibility, housing affordability, greenspaces, and possibly road and sidewalk improvements. Following the presentation, staff answered residents’ questions for about an hour. One resident asked why the west side of Summit Lake was not included in the plan. Officials said there were plans to expand into other parts of Summit Lake in the coming year. The plan was presented by city staff to the Akron Planning Commission today and received unanimous support. Next up is Akron City Council, which will discuss the proposal and vote this month or next, officials said. https://signalakron.org/summit-lake-residents-respond-to-proposed-zoning-changes/

Akron: Lock 3 Development
Should this thread be moved back into active projects? Anyway, one artist lined up for an art installation in Lock 3 with 5 more planned. Public art slated for Akron’s Lock 3 honors rubber history Ideastream Public Media | By Kabir Bhatia Published January 17, 2024 The transformation of Akron's Lock 3 Park is slated to include a new sculpture celebrating the city’s past. Curated Storefront has received $100,000 to commission a piece by Chakaia Booker. The New York-based artist repurposes old tires in her abstract work. She exhibited her work in Akron during the FRONT Triennial in 2022. The grant money comes from the nonprofit VIA Art Fund, also based in New York. It announced more than a dozen grants nationwide on Wednesday in addition to the funds for Lock 3. Rick Rogers, executive director of Curated Storefront, said they’ve also selected five potential artists for future projects. Over the next two years, he said they’re planning to raise about $400,000 to complete their goal of $1 million for art in the park. https://www.ideastream.org/arts-culture/2024-01-17/public-art-slated-for-akrons-lock-3-honors-rubber-history

I'll second that. While my preference is for this to be on the river, it's for it to be continuous on the river. Continuity > river fronting

Cleveland: Flats East Bank
Not the most accurate measure, but measuring on Google maps the river is ~288ft wide here. Just around the bend, near Center St the river narrows to ~140ft. I'll defer to anyone else with more expertise on this but, I don't think taking up a bit of the river for a boardwalk will significantly inhibit shipping traffic. I don't think routing along Old River is a bad alternative, but if we could keep it along the river I think we should.

Better than Max Miller. But that's a bar so low you could trip over it... Miller won the district in 2022 by almost 11%, I'm not sure Kucinich is going to be hurting a Democrat's chances here.

What are the property rights for these parcels? Does the property line extend into the river or do they include waterfront rights? If not then could the Metroparks or city just drop some pylons and build a board walk over the river around these parcels?

Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad
It maybe worth doing if for no other reason than preserving the rail right-of-way for passenger rail. It seems unlikely at this point that Amtrak would return to Tower City, but I believe Ken has said in the past that some of the costs to re-establish that right-of-way could be shared with CVSRR. Even more unlikely, if the old inter-city commuter route from Cleveland to Hudson-Akron-Canton was ever dusted off and implemented I would think it would utilize this right-of-way as well. I do want to stress that it would still only maybe worth doing. Seemingly long odds on either of those happening.
