  2. If the plans for the additional improvements that were canceled are in the city records somewhere it would be cool if, down the line, those improvements were finally completed. Akron's Glendale Steps to be recognized on National Register of Historic Places Ideastream Public Media By Grace Springer Published September 8, 2023 "The Glendale Steps, which connect Glendale Park to the West Hill neighborhood in Akron, have been listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Constructed in 1937, the steps were added to the register because of their significant Romanesque Revival style architecture and as the work of landscape architect Warren Manning, who is most famous for designing the gardens at Stan Hywet, according to a news release from nonprofit group Progress Through Preservation of Greater Akron. Manning began plans for the steps in 1929, when the Akron Garden Club commissioned him for improvements to the park area, according to the release. The steps finally began construction during the Great Depression in 1936 with Works Progress Administration funding. Other planned improvements to the park were cancelled due to budget problems during the Depression." https://www.ideastream.org/community/2023-09-08/akrons-glendale-steps-to-be-recognized-on-national-register-of-historic-places

  9. We'll be closing the books that day so hard to say when my day will end, but probably late evening. I'll try to catch the next one, enjoy!
  10. Its the former, they are no longer for sale. Which is also probably due to the decrease in demand.
  11. I think the opposition to police chased has been mischaracterized as "don't chase". Not calling out you specifically, you've moved the ball forward in this discussion. But this is what I mean when I say the chase / don't chase is a false dilemma. There are other means of pursuit. I think Cincinnati was testing a sticky tracker that can be shot onto cars to track them to their final destination rather than engaging in a high speed pursuit. Helicopters and drones, street cameras. All of these could be used to apprehend people who flee.
  12. This is a false dilemma
  13. I don't think anyone is not blaming the person fleeing. The question is whether the OSHP made the situation better or worse. Given this chase ended with 2 people almost being hit (really looks like one may have been hit) after the driver was t-boned, its very plausible the car chase did not make this specific situation better.

  17. Sound of Ideas: Roughly $130 million to be spent on the removal of the Gorge Dam in Cuyahoga Falls By Drew Maziasz Published August 31, 2023 Listen here. State and local agencies have been in the process of removing dams along the Cuyahoga River since the 1990s. The dams were originally used to feed water into the lock system, produce hydroelectric power, and irrigate farmland. But many of those uses also led to more polluted waters and cut off residents from enjoying what the Cuyahoga River has to offer. With a new source of funding secured for its removal, the Gorge Dam in Cuyahoga Falls is the latest dam set to be removed. It’s expected to be fully demolished by some time in 2026. Proponents of its removal say the dam coming down will improve water quality in that stretch of the river, as well as allowing more recreation activities, like kayaking and fishing. Thursday on the “Sound of Ideas,” we’ll discuss the removal of the Gorge Dam with some of the parties involved. The Director of the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency will be with us, as well as the Chief of Conservation for the Summit County Metro Parks. Later in the program, we’ll launch a new installment of our “Sound of Us” community storytelling initiative. This latest series of stories, “Living on the Spectrum” focuses on individuals on the autism spectrum. Finally, we’ll bring you another installment of our music podcast “Shuffle.” This week Amanda Rabinowitz sits down and talks with Canton area singer-songwriter Anya Van Rose.
  18. Akron aims to get new downtown hotel near convention center Dan Shingler August 31st 2023 "There’s a push on to get a major hotel built in downtown Akron, and the efforts are apparently gaining traction. Suzie Graham, president and CEO of the Downtown Akron Partnership (DAP), said getting the hotel has become a major goal of her organization. Such a hotel would boost the use of the John S. Knight Convention Center, she said, and DAP hopes to get it built next to or very near the convention center, which is on East Mill Street downtown. “Our visitor economy is coming back strong. It’s stronger than it was, and we have a great opportunity to secure a mid- to upscale hotel near our convention center,” said Graham, noting that the number of visitors (though not workers) who come downtown is set to eclipse pre-pandemic levels this year." https://www.crainscleveland.com/real-estate/post-pandemic-visits-rise-akron-aims-new-hotel
  19. GOJO cuts staff but says it's staying put in Akron Dan Shingler August 31st 2023 "GOJO Industries, the Akron-based maker of Purell, announced Thursday, Aug. 31, that it was laying off some salaried staff positions, but confirmed it is no longer for sale and staying in Akron. While a specific number of layoffs was not given, a company spokesperson confirmed reports that less than 10% of the company’s staff in Akron was affected. With about 2,500 employees before the cuts, GOJO was and remains a major employer downtown. The company has seen huge shifts in demand for its signature product, Purell hand sanitizer, since the pandemic struck in 2020 and caused GOJO to hire more people and open more production and distribution facilities." https://www.crainscleveland.com/manufacturing/gojo-cuts-staff-stay-akron

Based on the topology described (and looking at the topological map on google maps) the land may not be all that buildable outside of making a few lots along the road. I think that would also be the ideal balance; that would give Peninsula some tax base without greatly expanding needed infrastructure while also protecting the greenspace around the three watersheds flowing into the Cuyahoga to hopefully help improve the water quality. Also, based only on the description of the property from the article, it sounds like there could be some unique habitats in the area that would help protect certain species like bats.

I've never actually been to The Quarry, but from the description it sounds like a cool property. Ideally the Conservancy for CVNP would buy it and incorporate it into the park, but Peninsula probably needs a win for it's tax base after loosing out on the opportunity to develop the golf course. It's listed for $3.175M, down from $3.485M earlier in the spring, so apparently little interest in the property. The Quarry in Peninsula announces that this summer was likely its last for public swimming Craig Webb Akron Beacon Journal August 28, 2023 "Situated along state Route 303 just outside of the heart of Peninsula, the quarry is part of a 85-acre parcel that is up for sale. ... [Carol and George Haramis] plans to keep the 10-acre [Christmas Tree Farm] but is looking to sell the large [85-acre] swath of undeveloped land around it that includes a few ravines, a few ridgetops, two creeks, a pond and the sandstone swimming quarry. ... It is situated outside of the boundaries of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park so there are no scenic easement restrictions on the property." https://www.beaconjournal.com/story/news/2023/08/28/the-swimming-quarry-in-peninsula-may-be-closed-for-good/70698552007/
  24. I get the benefit of being centrally located, but I actually think Cleveland is the better location for the main studio. Given our theater district we have a lot of people already trained in set design and construction, makeup artists, sound engineers, light technicians, ect. I think Cleveland would more easily be able to fill the job openings for a movie production than some of the cities.
