  2. I think there's an animal welfare amendment that is floating around. But given that its unknown to this group, which is very plugged in politically, I assume there's not actually much traction to getting the amendment before voters. FWIW I believe I've seen some analysis in places that an animal welfare bill would actually help family farmers and hurt the large factory farmers...
  3. This seems to me to be the right move. I would also like to see the cross walk on W25 be raise as a speed hump and a redesign of Market Square Park. After Successful Pilot Efforts, What Will it Take to Close Market Avenue to Cars for Good? By Mark Oprea on Tue, Aug 8, 2023 "The summer of 2019 left a particular impression on Tom McNair, the executive director of Ohio City Incorporated. McNair, then five years into his position, was overjoyed that one of his walkability pursuits, the closing of Market Avenue to car traffic, was happening. By June, the street was covered in Astroturf and Adirondack chairs. No longer did lines of SUVs and cars line the curb. Instead, there was sidewalk seating, in the most European image Market Ave had ever seen. ... In the four years since Market Ave.'s brief identity as a pedestrian street, questions as to how to try again to close the avenue off are resurfacing in earnest, as the support for the avenue's permanent closure grows in its collective intent. But, as in 2019, quagmires continue arise." https://www.clevescene.com/news/after-successful-pilot-efforts-what-will-it-take-to-close-market-avenue-to-cars-for-good-42493025

  6. Cleveland police look to curfew and technology to combat crime wave Ideastream Public Media | By Matthew Richmond Published August 4, 2023 "Cleveland City Council came back from its summer recess for a special meeting this week on the city’s ongoing crime wave. Members pressured police officials to hire additional officers but Chief Wayne Drummond said they won’t even be able to keep up with the number of officers leaving. .. Three academy classes this year are scheduled to graduate 37 new officers, while 99 officers have already left the department. According to department figures, an additional 250 officers are eligible for retirement, meaning they’ve served 25 years and are at least 52 years old." https://www.ideastream.org/government-politics/2023-08-04/cleveland-police-look-to-technology-curfew-and-technology-to-combat-crime-wave
  7. I would assume this is being done now, at least in part, to strengthen Akron's appeal to the US EPA that they should be released from the last two covenants in the consent decree. Whatever the reason, I think this is probably a step in the right direction, though I would like to see more details/specifics. "The city is seeking feedback on the plan by Sep. 8. Akron proposes riparian setback ordinance to protect land surrounding waterways Ideastream Public Media | By Abigail Bottar Published August 4, 2023 "Akron is seeking feedback on a proposed ordinance that would protect land surrounding waterways. The plan would positively impact the health of Akron’s rivers and streams. The city is proposing a riparian setback ordinance, which would increase protection of land surrounding the city’s waterways. The setbacks would reduce the impact of runoff, as well as several other environmental benefits. ... The ordinance would not outlaw existing structures within the proposed setbacks but instead would regulate any new plans." https://www.ideastream.org/environment-energy/2023-08-04/akron-proposes-riparian-setback-ordinance-to-protect-land-surrounding-waterways

  13. ‘We need help’: Local officials push for DeWine’s assistance to stop gun violence in Cleveland Published: Jul. 30, 2023 By Molly Walsh "As Cleveland reels from a summer of violence, city leaders are pleading with Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine to calm the unrest. Cleveland City Councilman Michael Polensek said DeWine needs to understand the depth of the problem that officials are facing here. The governor spent time with residents in East Palestine, where a train derailment in February dumped hazardous materials into the Columbiana County village. But he has not been visible addressing the brutality plaguing Cleveland and other Ohio cities. ... Bibb and Polensek reached out to DeWine, the GOP governor, to ask for assistance from the Ohio State Highway Patrol, which has helped with traffic enforcement since May and will begin handling criminal cases in the city." https://www.cleveland.com/crime/2023/07/we-need-help-local-officials-push-for-dewines-assistance-to-stop-cleveland-gun-violence.html
  14. Cleveland school district bringing back buses for 7th and 8th graders by Paul Rochford "This week, CMSD announced it is bringing back yellow school buses for 7th and 8th graders this school year. The return to district-provided rides was made possible by $7 million in federal COVID relief money, which allowed the district to purchase 80 new buses. ... Prior to the purchase of the new buses, only about 220 of the district’s 300 buses were running, Eric Taylor, CMSD’s executive director of transportation, told Signal Cleveland. Of the buses that were working, many were dedicated to transporting students attending charter schools and other nonpublic schools, a responsibility that state law puts on the school district. Since the 2014-15 school year, middle school students who live more than a mile from their school, with the exception of popular city-wide-draw K-8 schools such as Campus International, have been given passes to ride public transportation. High school students also have access to the passes." https://signalcleveland.org/cleveland-school-district-adds-new-buses-for-7th-and-8th-graders/
  15. Cleveland partners with Cuyahoga County Sheriff to combat violent crime downtown Kim Palmer | August 1st 2023 "In an effort to deal with a spate of shootings and other violence that has occurred this summer in downtown Cleveland, the Cuyahoga County Sheriff’s department and the Cleveland Police Department are partnering to increase patrols and traffic enforcement throughout the central business district. Sheriff’s department law enforcement officers “will be strategically deployed to maximize resources and provide increased visibility — with the goal of deterring criminal behavior and improving security,” according to a statement from the county issued Monday, July 31. ... This is not the first time the city of Cleveland has partnered with other law enforcement agencies. In the spring, the Ohio State Highway Patrol joined with CPD to help deal with the city’s non-street-legal vehicles and other traffic problems." https://www.crainscleveland.com/government/county-sheriff-help-cleveland-police-downtown-patrols
  16. Interesting article, and an important data point to keep in mind. Even though we too many of our streets are auto-centric doesn't mean every street is a good candidate to be pedestrianized. I don't know Cuyahoga Falls that well, so correct me here, but could part of the reason it didn't work here is the lack of population/density and alternate modes of transportation available (i.e. public transit options)?
  17. Reading between the lines, it seems like there may be *some* uncertainty around the future of Burke, though the safe assumption is probably that it stays put. From the Crain's article on Bryant Francis, Hopkins' new Director of Port Control: "Asked at Friday’s event about Burke Lakefront Airport and talks of shuttering runways to make way for more lakefront development projects, Francis was careful to point out that he is “an airport guy” and noted there are at least two studies underway looking at land usage. “I do see where Burke is placed. … I know there is a lot of time and effort going into the hard decisions around this issue,” he said."
  18. Cleveland Hopkins in 2023 will see a completed master plan and 10 million passenger visits Kim Palmer | July 28th 2023 "[Bryant] Francis, who has been in the [director of port control] for about two months, said the airport is looking at a 2023 with two big developments: hitting passenger/visitor numbers of 10 million for the first time since 2019, and finalizing Hopkins’ 20-year master plan. ... The first phase of the master plan predicts needs based on an increase to around 11 million annual passengers, with those improvements costing between $800 million and $900 million. Planned infrastructure changes will increase the ticketing/check-in area by more than 3,000 square feet; nearly double the security screening checkpoint square footage; increase the number of gates to 53 from 45 while also increasing the seating capacity at the gates; and add 4,000 more parking spaces to the 65,000 currently available, he said." https://www.crainscleveland.com/government/cleveland-hopkins-2023-see-passengers-climb-above-10m

Improvements keep coming to CVNP! New pedestrian bridge marks better access to Cuyahoga Valley National Park, Cuyahoga River Ideastream Public Media | By Abigail Bottar Published July 27, 2023 "Cuyahoga Valley National Park unveiled a new bridge Thursday that connects visitors to the Towpath Trail and the Cuyahoga River. Park officials say the bridge is another way to elevate visitor experience. Positioned next to the Boston Mill Visitor Center, the bridge connects visitors from the center to the Towpath Trail and the Cuyahoga River. Instead of sharing a bridge with local traffic to go over the river, hikers, bikers and visitors alike can now safely cross on their own designated bridge. On Tuesday, in the afternoon sun over the rushing river, park officials, volunteers and visitors celebrated the opening of the pedestrian bridge in Peninsula. Amongst chirping birds, officials took the first trip of many over the new bridge. This bridge was a project the park wanted to take on since the visitor center opened in 2019, Park Superintendent Lisa Petit said, but they lacked the funding." https://www.ideastream.org/environment-energy/2023-07-27/new-pedestrian-bridge-marks-better-access-to-cuyahoga-valley-national-park-cuyahoga-river
  20. I seem to remember they were able to reuse the pylons used for the original stadium to build the new one. I'm also no engineer so I don't know how much reusing the pylons would save or how much new ones would cost.
  21. Anyone know if the reason the design team opted for a park rather than even a low-rise mixed use development is due to projected costs of building on North Coast Harbor because it's fill?

  23. Aerozone Alliance will be second location for RTA's microtransit program Kim Palmer | July 26th 2023 "The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority selected the Aerozone Alliance — an area near and around the NASA Glenn Research Center and Cleveland Hopkins International Airport — as the next location for a first/last mile, microtransit program connecting Cleveland workers to hard-to-get-to job hubs. The workforce connector pilot program, announced Tuesday, July 25, is the second private-public mobility partnership with RTA and Columbus-SHARE Mobility. It joins the Solon Workforce Connector pilot, which provides on-demand shuttle service between the Maple Heights Southgate Transit Center and large employers. That pilot was announced in February. The microtransit service provides employees with first/last mile transportation from the Brookpark Station in Cleveland to employment sites in the Aerozone Alliance district that currently require long walks from RTA bus stops." https://www.crainscleveland.com/government/rta-expands-microtransit-program-aerozone-alliance
