  1. The original post was a request to open the Cleveland Crime Thread, not to specifically comment on those events. Let's not shut this thread down too and stay on the topic of crime in Cleveland suburbs...
  2. Bedrock pays nearly $3 million for more riverfront land STAN BULLARD July 24, 2023 https://www.crainscleveland.com/real-estate/bedrock-buys-key-flats-site-28-million
  3. I think the reason there aren't many bikers is due to what you are describing with the lack of truly protected bike lanes and places to park/lockup bikes, but also, importantly, a very limited network of interconnected bike lanes. Even if you have the relative safety of a bike lane from where you start your journey, chances are you're going to end up on a sharrow or just a normal city street.
  4. Where's Cleveland RTA on this? Akron RTA is offering free rides to polling locations on election day, Cleveland should be able to at least match that. Laketran is offering free rides to the board of elections for those who want to vote in person early and free rides on election day to polling locations. Riders just have to tell the driver they are going to vote.
  5. Akron METRO RTA, Laketran offering free rides to vote in August special election Ideastream Public Media By Abigail Bottar Published July 24, 2023 "Voters in Lake and Summit counties can get free bus rides to vote in the August special election. The hope is to make voting more accessible. ... Akron METRO RTA has offered free bus rides for general elections since 2018, but this is the first time the transit authority will be offering free rides for a special election. Fairchild hopes the service will drum up voter engagement on Election Day. ... Akron METRO RTA is waiving all fares for riders on August 8." https://www.ideastream.org/government-politics/2023-07-24/akron-metro-rta-laketran-offering-free-rides-to-vote-in-august-special-election
  6. This is very promising and by itself I would think do quite a bit to promote development along these corridors. Hopefully it's just a first step though; It would be nice to see the city at least consider/study implementing a land value tax so lots don't sit empty I'm not as familiar with the zoning laws and building code so forgive me if this is ignorant, but it seems like comprehensive and substantial reform is needed here so it is clear for builders what they can build and they don't have to worry about having to go through an iterative review and redesign process that can be derailed at any time by a small handful of residents. I hope they also have in mind some street redesigns to compliment this new policy; I think I've heard Lorain is due for a road diet, seems like it could be a good candidate for a BRT line too. W117th comes to mind. I had one question about this legislation though, @KJP, do you know if this change to the zoning laws will be fixed to the area currently defined by transit frequency or will it change as services change? If the RTA increases frequency to a new area of the city would that be eligible for this new zoning and would the inverse be true as well?
  7. NASA Glenn is a key partner with airlines in developing advances in flight Kim Palmer July 21st 2023 "The prospect of returning to the moon and eventual commercial space flight garners the biggest headlines, but NASA Glenn Research Center’s work on the next decade of advances in commercial air travel is expected to be just as groundbreaking — and for many, more relevant. ... NASA has grown into an agency with 10 centers across the country and a $27 billion annual budget. Each site has a unique role, specialty and set of core competencies that contribute to the agency’s aerospace and aeronautical missions, Kenyon said. Glenn has more than 500 specialized research and test facilities, including full-scale engine, flight, materials and structures testing; and wind tunnels used to accurately simulate harsh flight conditions. Those facilities have enabled the agency to work with industry and academia to develop decades of aeronautical technology advances." https://www.crainscleveland.com/government/nasa-glenn-key-future-innovations-air-travel
  8. Where does it say that the NWSL or MLS Next Pro can't play in a multi-use stadium? It says it says that one of the reasons it was eliminated in the last expansion round was "the stadium situation" and the stadium is a "crucial element" in its current bid, but where does it say it needs to be a stand-alone stadium? I don't know what their plan for a stadium was in the previous bid, but my understanding is while you can host a soccer game in the current Browns stadium its not ideal. But if you were to build a stadium intending both field uses I would think it would work just fine for both. Maybe I'm wrong about that, but I think its worth looking into for cost and land use reasons.
  9. Unless the teams/leagues are going to be building these new stadiums I would like to at least see some consideration given to combining the new soccer stadium with the new Browns stadium. I understand field size and uses are different, but if we really want to maximize the number of times the stadium is used combining the use of a football and soccer stadium seems the best solution. Heck, even if the teams/leagues are going to completely finance the construction of two new stadiums I would still like to see them combined if they are going to be downtown. Its a massive area these stadiums sit on. Cleveland Soccer Group makes progress on stadium plan, eyes 2026 NWSL bid JOE SCALZO July 20, 2023 05:45 AM https://www.crainscleveland.com/sports-business/cleveland-soccer-group-eyes-national-womens-soccer-league-bid
  10. And this response entirely ignores the point I was making. Good candidates at the top of the ticket for a party can help down ballot, but the inverse is true as well. If democratic voters in heavily gerrymandered districts in rural Ohio know that their vote will make absolutely no difference in the state house, state senate, and US house elections that is a huge incentive to not turnout at all to vote in statewide elections. On the side of the politicians; anyone who is qualified is going to either stay in the private sector to make more money than run a failed campaign. Or, if they really are committed to being in public office they will move to a state where elections are fair and the statehouse is functional because it isn't imbalanced due to gerrymandered districts.
  11. This ignores the effect gerrymandering has on voter turnout of the opposition party and that party's ability to recruit, develop, and retain quality candidates that will leave for states with fair elections if they have ambitions of actually governing.
  12. That's what Eric Wobser made it sound like. The entire district is within Cleveland City limits, I don't know why the county thinks it shouldn't be dominated by Cleveland appointees. The concerns over creating another quasi-public entity to direct development of a large area of the city seems like a much more valid discussion to be had.
  13. Akron Mayor Horrigan, with support of the Ohio EPA, requests to be released from the 2 remaining criteria of the US EPA consent decree to control it's sewer and stormwater runoff. Akron is proposing 4 alternative stormwater interventions costing roughly a combined $50m instead of building an enhanced high-rate treatment facility near the Towpath Trail north of downtown near the Little Cuyahoga River, costing around $200m. Akron takes on U.S. EPA over sewer mandates Dan Shingler July 18th 2023 "The city has spent more than $1 billion so far trying to satisfy federal mandates that at one point were projected to cost Akron more than $1.5 billion, before it came up with some creative ways to get those costs down. At a news conference on Tuesday, July 18, held along the Towpath Trail north of downtown near the Little Cuyahoga River, Horrigan said that’s enough and drew his line in the sand. ... With all but two of the 26 federally mandated components of the entire project completed, Horrigan said Akron has gotten the results it and the Cuyahoga River watershed need. ... Those alternatives include reducing discharge by treating wastewater at the city’s existing facility on Cuyahoga Street; adding sewers to the village of Peninsula in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park; working to provide sanitary sewer service to the Sawyerwood neighborhood in Springfield Township; and addressing sewer overflows to Springfield Lake from the village of Lakemore." https://www.crainscleveland.com/akron-news/akron-fights-us-epa-over-huge-sewer-mandate

Breeze Airways to start service to Fort Myers, Florida, from Akron-Canton Airport Scott Suttell July 18th 2023 "Low-fare airline Breeze Airways is adding another nonstop route to Florida from the Akron-Canton Airport. Breeze on Tuesday, July 18, announced it will launch a winter and spring seasonal route, starting Nov. 16, to Fort Myers, Florida. The flight will operate on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. To launch the service, Breeze is offering the routes with fares starting at $59 (one-way) if purchased by Monday, July 24. From Akron-Canton, Breeze already offers nonstop service to Orlando, Tampa and West Palm Beach in Florida, as well as Charleston, South Carolina; Las Vegas; and Norfolk, Virginia." https://www.crainscleveland.com/transportation/breeze-airways-launch-fort-myers-service-akron-canton
  15. Doesn't residential conversion help offset the losses from the WFH transition though? Assuming at least some of the people that live in a converted office space are working from home at least some of the week that is still payroll tax revenue coming into the city.
  16. Something new is brewing in downtown Canton Dan Shingler July 17th 2023 "Canton’s getting a new brewery, to be followed by some luxury apartments, in the midst of the city’s innovation district and just steps away from downtown events center Centennial Plaza that was completed in 2021. The old Canton Brewing Co. building will soon have a new name on the door. Brew Kettle, which has its main brewery in Middleburg Heights and five other locations across region, will open a 12,000-square-foot brewery, restaurant and activity center in the former Canton Brewing building at 120 3rd St NW, said Brew Kettle owner Bryan Weber. “This is the city’s arts district, so we’re going to rebrand it as The District Brewing Co.,” Weber said as he gave a tour of the place on Tuesday, July 11." https://www.crainscleveland.com/real-estate/brew-kettle-owner-bringing-new-brewery-downtown-canton
  17. What Would an Amtrak Revival Look Like? By Angie Schmitt July 14, 2023 "Just four trips a day roll between the two Pacific Northwest cities, a 175-mile journey that takes just over three hours. Limited service and a typically spotty on-time performance means that the Cascades route struggles to compete with driving and flying on this corridor, which sits at the sweet spot for intercity rail. But by US train travel standards, anyway, Cascades is something of a success story. Supported with generous state subsidies, fares hover around $30. Between the two major metros, which are home to a combined 7 million people, Amtrak carried about half a million riders in 2019 — more than all the airlines combined. Soon, however, Pacific Northwest residents could see what’s really possible. Under the national rail carrier’s proposed 15-year, $75 billion expansion plan, Portland-to-Seattle service would be more than tripled to 13 trips a day." https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-07-14/inside-amtrak-s-75-billion-plan-to-revive-us-train-travel
  18. I was wondering about this as well. Flights to other places in Europe are cheap from Ireland; assuming people are using the convenience of the direct flight to Ireland to then get cheap connecting flights to other European cities I would also assume that would be detail the Aer Lingus would have (maybe a big assumption, at least with the route still new). Do airlines ever share this information with airport officials/administrators? Or is there a way folks at Hopkins could get their hands on this to target the next European destination?
  19. Akron CDC The Well gets $8 million for housing rehab Dan Shingler July 14th 2023 "Akron’s community development corporation The Well got a huge boost in its effort to rehabilitate housing in the city’s Middlebury neighborhood. The city and the Knight Foundation announced they are each giving the nonprofit grants of $4 million to continue its work on what the city has dubbed the “Restoring Housing” program. ... Horrigan has committed $2.75 million from the city’s allocation of American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding along with $1.25 million in U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development grants, the city announced. Knight is matching that amount." https://www.crainscleveland.com/real-estate/akron-cdc-well-receives-8-million-housing-work
  20. I took this flight June 9th and it was overbooked. Rumor was a family didn't buy a ticket for their child over 2 expecting the kid would be able to sit on their lap for the flight. Hoping that this flight remains popular and we can leverage it to more European destinations.
  21. I really think this is our best option. Not only does it better connect east-side neighborhoods to the lakefront, but it connects those neighborhoods to downtown as well. ODOT plans to spend billions in coming years in modernization efforts on the central interchange and dead man's curve. Even with making the curve less dramatic I still don't see how traffic isn't going to back up on 90 westbound with the shoreway converting to a lower speed boulevard at the same place 90 turns south.
