2026 Ohio Statewide Races
Maybe Crain's got out over their skis on this reporting or maybe Vivek fell out of grace over the weekend. Either way leaving DOGE (or being forced out) before even getting started does not give him much of a spring board... And if Vivek was forced out might call into question his support within MAGA. Vivek Ramaswamy to leave DOGE and launch a run for Ohio governor

I meant the full route map, it looses definition when zooming in. My mistake though, the AECOM map is just fine. I didn't know they ran all the way to Canton, why did they stop?

Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad
Informative update, as always. This is disappointing, but it sounds like there's still some hope. Ken, would you be able to share the route map so it is easier to see the detail and where bedrocks proposed station is? I get CVSR trains alone likely wouldn't be enough volume to make a difference to Tower City, but I really feel like Bedrock missed a huge opportunity by pushing for a multimodal station returning to TC. Is it also maybe worth CVSR looking south? I know there isn't the same population density in that direction but doesn't Akron MTA own the rail right of way to Canton and they could link to the McKinley Library and First Ladies Museum. Would also preserve that rail corridor if Akron-Canton ever decided they want to invest in that rail connection to CAK.

Cleveland: Mayor Justin Bibb
Given that I wasn't aware that Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego is the outgoing leader I'm not sure how big of a deal this is for Bibb or Cleveland in the national conversation, but within internal Democratic politics I imagine this is great for Mayor Bibb. Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb picked to lead nationwide group for democratic mayors Published: Jan. 17, 2025 By Sean McDonnell, cleveland.com CLEVELAND, Ohio — Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb has been tapped to lead the Democratic Mayors Association, just as Republicans take control of all three branches of the federal government. The group, made up of mayors across the country who lead cities of 30,000 or more, announced Bibb as its next president in a news release Friday. ... The Democractic Mayors Association describes itself as an organization that mobilizes mayors on behalf of progressive issues under a united voice. https://www.cleveland.com/news/2025/01/cleveland-mayor-justin-bibb-pick-to-lead-nationwide-group-for-democratic-mayors.html National coverage: NBC News Cleveland's Justin Bibb to lead Democratic mayors group ABC News 'Homegrown rising star': Justin Bibb tapped to lead Democratic Mayors Association

Ramaswamy will use DOGE as springboard to run for Ohio governor Gregory Korte, Bloomberg Jan 17th, 2025 Vivek Ramaswamy, the former presidential candidate and biotech entrepreneur partnering with Elon Musk on a project to slash the size of the federal government, plans to announce a 2026 campaign for Ohio governor, according to a campaign operative familiar with his thinking. Ramaswamy’s future came into clearer focus on Friday, Jan. 17, after Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine bypassed him and chose his lieutenant governor, Jon Husted, to replace Vice President-elect JD Vance in the U.S. Senate. But the Ohio campaign operative said Ramaswamy’s plan was always to help with a sweeping federal cost-cutting initiative under President Donald Trump to build a resume for governor. https://www.crainscleveland.com/politics-policy/ramaswamy-use-doge-springboard-run-ohio-governor

Lakewood: Development and News
Immigrant Son Brewery Owner Andrew Revy to Open Sofia's Kitchen + Bar in Former Salt Space in Lakewood By Douglas Trattner Jan 17, 2025 Lakewood, like many neighborhoods, suffered a series of devastating restaurant losses in 2024. Eric Williams shuttered El Carnicero after 11 years, Matt Fish closed the original Melt Bar and Grilled after nearly 20 years, and Jill Vedaa and Jessica Parkison closed Salt on a high note after eight years. But in this business, when one door closes, it won’t be long before that door reopens with somebody else turning the key. In the case of Salt, that person is Andrew Revy, who owns Immigrant Son Brewery a half mile away in the same neighborhood. After being approached about the potential of taking over the space, Revy says had no choice but to consider it. ... Heading up the kitchen is veteran chef Andy Strizak, whose resume includes stops with a who’s who of Cleveland’s top culinary mentors – stretching clear back to Parker Bosley at Parker's American Bistro. Other employers include Michael Symon, Karen Small and Ben Bebenroth. Like those mentors, Strizak strives for fresh, local and seasonal product at all turns. https://www.clevescene.com/food-drink/immigrant-son-brewery-owner-andrew-revy-to-open-sophias-kitchen-bar-in-former-salt-space-in-lakewood-45886903

2026 Ohio Statewide Races
Did DeWine do Democrats a favor by nominating Jon Husted to fill Vance's Senate seat? The governor's race is obviously still Republican's to lose so Democrats will have to put up a compelling candidate. I don't think Acton is it, I don't think Ryan is it. As much as I like Brown and would love for him to be governor I'm not even sure he is it either being branded a career politician in his last election. I assume on the Republican side you're going to have some mix of Frank LaRose, Josh Mandel, maybe Vivek Ramaswamy, Matt Dolan and some others. Husted would be more moderate than any of that group, other than Dolan, and have more relevant experience. Also, two years into Trump's governance may create a positive environment for Democrats. On top of that, I'm holding out hope that Ohio wont vote for a MAGA candidate not named Trump when Trump is not on the ballot.

I've had this same thought, in part because of something you alluded to above; when buying fabrics you want to actually see and feel the fabric so it is one of the few retail formats that makes sense to retain a brick and mortar footprint. The smaller format would also cover more than just garmet sewing; you mentioned quilting but also upholstery. Smaller format and niche focus also lets you train your employees to be specialists instead of generalists so they can actually be helpful to newbies or DIYers.

Summit Metro Parks’ upgraded parcours trails offer all-season exercise journeys Published: Jan. 16, 2025 By Megan Becka, special to cleveland.com AKRON, Ohio – If winter weather has you feeling a bit stir crazy, consider checking out one of the recently renovated parcours trails at Akron’s Goodyear Heights Metro Park and Sand Run Metro Park. Parcours (the French word for journey) trails consist of a path that includes exercise equipment or obstacles installed at various points. Each station has a beginner and “par” level indicated on its sign to offer fitness options for beginners through experienced users. Signage instructs trail users on what to do at each station, along with prompts to walk or run between stations. Exercises include stretching, jumping over rocks or using the chin-up bars, for example. ... Upgrades included $13,000 for station equipment for both trails. Sand Run Metro Park trail improvements also included a permanent reroute of part of the trail onto the East End section of the jogging trail. The East End project, which included a new bridge, roadway pavement removal, grading, stream and wetland area restorations, and trail surfacing totaled $1.1 million. The park district received a $175,000 grant from Clean Ohio to help fund construction costs, according to Marketing & Public Relations Manager Claire Merrick. https://www.cleveland.com/akron/2025/01/summit-metro-parks-upgraded-parcours-trails-offer-all-season-exercise-journeys.html

Silver Creek was selected for improvements because the park district eliminated swimming at the park during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to Mark Szeremet, the park district’s chief of planning and development. Recent park improvements include the addition of Miner’s Trail, new boat docks and renovations to the Big Oak Area parking lot and restroom building. JobsOhio
I don't know the structure of JobsOhio so I similarly might lack nuance, but I think we can reasonably assume good intentions here and this is an unintended consequence of organizational structure. JobsOhio has is broken into several regional areas of focus, but I assume most, if not all, of the leadership is based in Columbus and so there is an implicit bias towards those developments because leadership is more familiar with those projects and project areas. Solution being disperse the leadership among the regions.

With Intel specifically weren't there also other limiting factors on where these fabs can be built? I seem to remember reading something saying they couldn't be within a certain number of miles of a freight rail line because the vibration would throw off the calibration of the chip production. Could be misremembering though.

Akron-Canton: General Business & Economic News
Here is the UofA article I was referencing in my last post. Also, free article from Signal Akron for anyone without a Crain's subscription - Akron to receive an additional $6.4 million for polymer-related job training ‘It’s like cutting my heart out …’ — Faculty, students at University of Akron react to proposed cuts by Arielle Kass and Andrew Keiper November 23, 2024 Proposed cuts of 10 polymer professors at the University of Akron have already had a chilling effect on the well-regarded program, leading to anxiety about how it will continue if the reductions become reality. ... Faculty in Akron’s polymer program said this week that the proposed cuts would be devastating to the university. But a message from the president’s office, sent to stakeholders in the program, said the university wanted to “bolster” the program by reorganizing it to include chemical engineering and chemistry. The letter said the merger of disciplines would increase faculty interaction with students and encourage multidisciplinary teaching and research. https://signalakron.org/its-like-cutting-my-heart-out-faculty-students-at-university-of-akron-react-to-proposed-cuts/

Akron-Canton: General Business & Economic News
Some countervailing winds here; the announcement for additional funding of the Polymer Hub is very good news, but despite already announced Polymer Hub funding (some I assume would be funneled into UofA) University of Akron announced another round of cuts, including to their polymer program. Just yesterday Crain's also had a write up on Goodyear's remaining planned divestiture, it's chemical business. The long and short of that article was it could very likely mean a hollowing out of those existing chemical jobs in Akron. Hoping the momentum from these state and federal grants overcomes these potential setbacks. Akron's Sustainable Polymers Tech Hub nets another $3 million grant Kim Palmer Jan 14th, 2025 Akron’s Sustainable Polymers Tech Hub was awarded $3 million from the U.S. Economic Development Administration’s (EDA) Good Jobs Challenge in the waning days of President Joe Biden’s administration. The federal matching funding, announced Tuesday, Jan. 14, will help support the Greater Akron Chamber’s Advanced Polymer and Manufacturing Excellence (APEX) program, which addresses skilled-worker shortages and training gaps in the region’s polymer industry. ... The Good Jobs Challenge funding will be used to support a partnership of regional employers, educational institutions, industry, community and labor organizations working to design and implement industry workforce strategies targeting Portage, Stark, Summit and Wayne counties. https://www.crainscleveland.com/manufacturing/akron-polymers-hub-gets-3-million-federal-funding Goodyear's next divestiture could be painful for Akron - Dan Shingler (Jan 15th, 2025)

Cleveland: Cleveland-Cliffs
Because from the perspective of the CEO and Board a name change and relocation of the HQ is not a real concession. It will hurt Cleveland, not the shareholders, and I'll say this again, Companies have no loyalty to cities.
-
Cleveland: Cleveland-Cliffs
I want Cleveland Cliffs to stay here as much as anyone else, but I think a lot of us need to take off our homer goggles. Goncalves and the Board have been pursuing this acquisition for over a year, their current strategy hasn't worked so they're sweetening the pot by offering to move the HQ and keep the US Steel name. If we're objective about this, to the Board the location of the HQ between Cleveland and Pittsburg is pretty irrelevant as is the name of the company. Though, again, if we are objective US Steel clearly has the stronger brand name. I've talked to people in Cleveland that don't know who Cleveland Cliffs is or what they do. People know US Steel, they know its history, they know it has its roots with Andrew Carnegie and J.P. Morgan. These things obviously matter a lot to us and it would be detrimental to Cleveland, but the ends of completing the acquisition justify the means in the eyes of the Board. I'll say this again, the Board's loyalty is to its shareholders and no one else and being the largest steel producer in the US, especially if tariffs come in to play, will be beneficial to the shareholders.

Tremco is a subsidiary of RPM, are subsidiaries including in the F500?
-
Cleveland: Cleveland-Cliffs
Acquiring US Steel would be a huge win for Goncalves and the shareholders, they don't care what the name of the company is or where it is located. Should serve as a reminder that corporations don't show any loyalty to their home towns unless incentivized to.

State representative Adam Mathews (R-Lebanon) was the bill sponsor I believe, at least according to the article. Can't say I'm familiar with him. I wasn't aware of this bill until I came across the article either. Given there's a fair number of villages in Cuyahoga County it'd be interesting to see an analysis of which villages would automatically trigger a ballot measure in 2031/2032.

I have a soft-spot for the current aquarium because my Grandpa worked on the furnaces in the old power plant there, and I do think they did a nice job working the displays into the existing space--utilizing the smoke stacks, ect--but a bigger aquarium would definitely be nice. Not sure if Cleveland Metroparks would be interested in owning and operating but they would be a logical partner.

Medina County Park District in planning stage of Liverpool Meadows Nature Preserve Madisyn Woodring, The Gazette Jan 10, 2025 LIVERPOOL TWP. — The Medina County Park District is currently working to finish the last project of its 10-year plan, which involves opening its first park in Liverpool Township.
