  1. When should we start looking out for another article?

I remember they dredged a short section from the river to the mud-dam on the east side of the canal shortly before removing the dam in the river. Would be a weird thing to spend money on if they weren't certain they were going to put the pump in. So here's hoping because you make a good point. Not that the section of the canal north of here flowed all that well before hand...

We're talking about the Brecksville dam here, right? I think he was talking about the purpose of the original dam, not objectives after removing. From what I remember, they weren't so much concerned with feeding the canal as they were with clearing the channel of Cuyahoga to bring down water temperatures, increase oxygenation, and allow fish to freely travel. However, there is a plan to put on place a pump where the old canal feed was to pump some water from the river into the canal. I don't know what's taken them so long or of that plan has since been scrapped.
  4. https://www.businessreport.com/business/amtrak-backs-rail-merger-that-could-bring-baton-rouge-to-nola-passenger-service "Amtrak and Canadian Pacific Railway Limited today announced an agreement, with Amtrak supporting the proposed combination of CP and Kansas City Southern railways. The combination, which still needs final regulatory approval, is a pivotal step toward launching passenger rail service between Baton Rouge and New Orleans Amtrak and CP have already committed to operating the rail service. However, today’s support agreement, which highlights CP’s positive track record in dealing with Amtrak will be filed as part of the docket in the CP-KCS proceeding at the Surface Transportation Board, adding evidence to support the merger."
  5. Topped Austin, not bad company to be in!
  6. And over all crime is down. The rise in homicides is concerning, but it is very easy to get the perception that crime is rampant and out of control when sharing one-off stories of crime without the broader context. I get that's the point of this thread, but this bigger picture doesn't come through enough. And it almost never comes through cleveland.com/PD, which could just be replace by NE Ohio Scanner twitter... It creates a really harmful narrative for the city. so, thank you for providing the added context.

When did Schumer become a progressive?
  8. So this conversation can happen in the appropriate thread. It's not that you can't say anything bad about Bibb it's that criticisms should be fair and supported. "He's definitely better than a buddy of Bibb's or an inexperienced (in airports) campaign worker, but its certainly not the type of change that Bibb promised" So if he keeps people in place he's not bringing change, but if he replaces anyone they're his buddy or don't have experience themselves? This is an unreasonable standard. Who do you want him to appoint? He was sworn in like 3 days ago and you're already throwing around corruption allegations. Anything whatsoever to back this up? It was clear you never liked the guy, but give him a chance to prove you right or wrong.

Manchin doesn't need to filibuster. You need a super majority of 60 votes to break a filibuster to bring a bill to vote. The only reason Manchin has leverage over BBB is because the Democrats are trying to circumvent the filibuster to pass their legislation through reconciliation. The Senate is limited in how many bills they can pass through reconciliation and those bills are limited in scope. He also has leverage over the filibuster debate because it again only takes a simple majority to pass senate rules changes. The true irony is that if the Senate got rid of the filibuster it would likely result in more bipartisan legislating.

  11. They're going to continue to operate the parking lot for now. They didn't specify what the end goal was beside maintaining public access to the river front. I think it's a bit premature to get worked up just yet.
  12. Could we get a pedestrian bridge across the river here now, please?
  13. FWIW I believe the rail lines running through the peninsula are abandoned if we wanted to get really wild and extend a rapid line through.
  14. Who’s plowing snow, collecting trash and handling other city business as Mayor Bibb settles into office? "Monday marked Justin Bibb’s first day as mayor of Cleveland, and though it will take some time to get his new administration fully up-and-running, routine city business still needs to be handled. So who is overseeing snowplows, police, trash collection, building permits and other day-to-day city tasks, now that Bibb has been sworn-in and 16-year former Mayor Frank Jackson is officially out? The answer, in many cases, hasn’t changed much from a few weeks ago: Numerous Jackson appointees remain at the helm across many city departments." https://www.cleveland.com/news/2022/01/whos-plowing-snow-collecting-trash-and-handling-other-city-business-as-mayor-bibb-settles-into-office.html

  16. Context is often lost when sharing individual crime stories. Crime has been rising the past 2 years, but that is from historic lows. If this continues it will certainly be a larger concern, and we certainly don't want to wait to address it until it becomes a larger issue, but I think it is important to keep this in perspective, especially on this thread. https://www.cleveland.com/metro/2022/01/clevelands-homicide-total-dips-in-2021-still-second-highest-in-30-years.html That said, crime statistics don't matter to the individuals who directly experience crime and it's repercussions. Condolences to KFM44107.

  18. I think we can walk and chew gum at the same time.
  19. I'll agree some men in history deserve a nuanced understand to be able to recognize both their great accomplishments and terrible deeds. However, monuments and buildings rarely provide context for this nuanced discussion and I think that is the point that is often lost in these conversations. Also, removing a name from a building isn't the same this as removing the individual from the curriculum. (Not that you are suggesting it is.)
  20. I don't think anyone is arguing it will solve all the problems in Cleveland. Just this very specific problem.
  21. The print journalism environment definitely became more difficult, but the decline of the Plain Dealer (and so many other local newspapers) falls squarely on Advance Publishing. They cannibalized the daily newspaper by creating a free site, with mostly the same stories, but a separate non-union news room. All that just to pushout and destroy one of the first news guilds in the country. As soon as that was done they started putting their stories behind a paywall. Not sure how well that worked out for them, tough to ask people to start paying for something after you've provided it for free for so long and right after you bust a union in the manner that they did. And that's all without mentioning the decline reporting that LifeLongClevelander brings up. Seems like almost half their stories are just mad libs, fill-in-the-blank, police blotter stories without any larger context of crime in the city. At least we have nonprofit papers like The Land and a couple more slates to get started in '22 to help fill the void.
  22. That's in addition to the ~$3.5M the port is getting from the state. - Rehabilitation of Docks 26 West and 24: $946,884 - S. Customs and Border Protection Facility: $870,933 - Dock 20 North Paved Container Yard: $1,737,500 But it looks like this grant is only for planning rather than actual capital improvements which would explain why it's well below the average. https://www.portofcleveland.com/port-of-cleveland-awarded-10-52m-in-state-maritime-grant-funding/
  23. Is it too soon to know about a replacement project? Is Stark selling the lot?
  24. Right... Well given the mess she inherited in the massive maintenance backlog, declining ridership and revenues, and ever expanding residential and employment sprawl, I would say she's done about as well as expected. There have been obvious missteps, like the request for proposal of a new rail fleet. However long over due this is, it is good that it's going through now and that it sounds like they are switching to a single rail fleet. Moving to signal prioritization and right-of-way on the health line is a positive, though again overdue. Adopting a smart card and upgrading the RTAs app, all positives. An increased focus on TOD for new revenue streams and to increased ridership is also a great shift in thinking. Most of these will take time to see the benefits so hard to say better now than when she took over, but I would argue she's setting us in the right track.
