Cleveland: Historic Photos
^ oh i know! its actually still there today if im not mistaken. right next to Erieview plaza/tower Yea the East Cleveland phenomenon heh theres also an old fashioned law in the books that force a certain section of Cleveland Heights students to go to East Cleveland schools. Of course it was used so that white kids who couldnt afford to live in E Cleveland that lived in the heights to go to a nice school. Ha... today thats why theres a "bad part" and a "good part" of cleveland heights heh.

Cleveland: Historic Photos
Case and CSU have a lovely collection of old photographs of Cleveland before its "peak" and during. Thought id post a few of my favorites: A 1930s view of the city from Detroit-Superior bridge. I think at this time the subway trollies ran inside the structure The Academy of Music in the 1880s 1899 Streetcar Strike on Lower Euclid The Cleveland Ship Building Company in 1890 One of the many mansions on Millionaire's Row Euclid Avenue 1890 The Blizzard of 1913 Rockefeller himself in, yes, East Cleveland The Central Market on East 4th Street in 1946 The Cuyahoga Building in 1893 The riverbank "The Flats" back in 1870 Cleveland Municipal Stadium 1931 Millionaire's Row Euclid Beach First Baptist Church on East 9th in 1875 Public Square in 1910 Public Square celebration of Germany's Victory over France in the Franco Prussian War in 1871 Haymarket on Ontario Rd in 1930 A Lorain-Carnegie Bridge pillar and their craftsmen Ah streetcar suburb in the 1920s The May Company Building in 1941 The Feast of the Assumption in Little Italy 1950 (wow its still the same today!) Public Square facing the terminal in 1929 Artist touching up a mural in 1938 (wow holding a cig and messy hair, again, so little has changed haha) A Nike Missle in 1958 Wade Lagoon in 1900 Public Square in 1895 The Perry-Payne Building in the 1880s Constructing Terminal Tower in 1927 What was originally proposed 1970 war protesters at CWRU Public Square 1943 more pictures here http://ech.cwru.edu/ech-cgi/gal-frame.pl

Westlake: Crocker Park
http://www.crockerpark.com/images/birdseye.jpg"> http://www.crockerpark.com/index.html Now thats a lifestyle center. Which is rather ridiculous to build a downtown in a suburb. A reason why i dont think this will actually be a "downtown" is the fact that its being built to isolate itself from the community. This is like building a development/cul-de-sacs with retail and parking. This right here is a product of segregated, landlocked major cities. I dont see things like this working because its going to end up either hurting downtown cleveland, hurting the suburbs around westlake, or become a flop and hurt westlake itself. Give yourself the option of an uncomplicated lifestyle. Come to Crocker Park where downtown amenities abound in a tree-lined setting. Your great-grandfather was right. To him, a commute was a sweet walk downstairs and around the corner to his sunny Main Street office. This is what R.L. Stark is recreating today in Crocker Park. A unique mixed-use community, Crocker Park in Westlake, Ohio, combines gracious living and modern office space with the convenience of your favorite shops and restaurants only a stroll away. It couldn’t be more traditional. It couldn’t be more modern. A variety of choices. This includes apartments, condos, town homes, and single family homes. hmm i dont know, it has a somewhat "Pleasantville" creepiness to it as well.

Butler County: Development and News
Fake Downtowns exist because theres a reason for them to exist. A space where a collection of businesses, people, institutions, and culture all mix and form a sense of place. You cant build that, it happens over time and it happens as a result of need. This sounds like what they're trying to do for Westlake here in Cleveland, a suburb trying to build a pop-up downtown. Its good and 'anti-sprawl' in a way, but then again its not in a central location and either takes away business from the main CBD or it cant survive and ends up being a flop due to its location or the fact that it cant keep up with Cincinnati. Either way its bad to develop like this because no matter how you cut it something is going to be hurt by it. However "Fifteen buildings - ranging from one to six stories " I dont think thats so much of a downtown rather more of a "dense neighborhood". So in this case itll probably have no effect either way. Although $270,000? May as well go for the real thing?

Cleveland's would be the Case Weatherhead School of Business (even with the tacky "Peter B Lewis" nametag on it). Hands down. http://www.jwaynephoto.com/graphics/book/01.jpg"> http://www.wcpn.org/images/PHOTOS/around-noon/gehry/gehry-5.jpg"> http://www.universitycircle.org/content/PBL-1.jpg"> http://www.wcpn.org/images/PHOTOS/around-noon/gehry/gehry-4.jpg"> http://members.tripod.com/clevelandphoto/photo_gallery/members/rynes_ed/Rynes11.jpg"> http://www.cwru.edu/pubs/cwrumag/fall2002/features/landmark/images/pbl1.jpg"> http://www.clevelandartsprize.org/images/1990_speccit_lewis_b.jpg"> http://www.clevelandartsprize.org/images/1990_speccit_lewis_d.jpg"> http://www.clevelandartsprize.org/images/1990_speccit_lewis_e.jpg"> http://www.clevelandartsprize.org/images/1990_speccit_lewis_c.jpg"> http://www.clevelandartsprize.org/images/1990_speccit_lewis_i.jpg"> http://www.clevelandartsprize.org/images/1990_speccit_lewis_m.jpg"> I dont think the pictures do it justice Its funny how the Art School building is next to it in this 60 year old modest international style building and the business school is this building/sculpture thing. i thought cleveland was trying to cater to the creative class?

in a way, its more of a conventional apartment with high ceilings. loft inspired, simply to play up the place as "trendy".
