Currently attending The Cleveland Institute of Art Im interested in the Technology and Integrated Media Environment (or in other words "digital art") and also im into painting, but as grandma says "you wont make any money painting!".

Annual heavy rail ridership (2003): 4.6 million Annual light rail ridership (2003): 2.7 million I only know of the statistics for Heavy rail (tower city/airport) and light rail (shaker heights, downtown, waterfront line) Personally i know whenever im downtown i look at the train going by and no one is on it. Not a soul. The project been used by anti-transit people in Charlotte as an example of why they shouldnt add light rail to their downtown. But really it lies in the fact that the WL starts out going through the flats and terminates at the municipal parking lot at the rock hall rather than actually looping back through the densest area of downtown (this would have made it useful to go from the strictly business areas back home to the Warehouse District residential areas)

yea Cleveland expanded to the airport, it was actually the first train system in the country to do so. It even got a new line in the mid 90s, but no one rides it (sometimes the tourists do?) since it only goes to the rock hall instead of looping back around downtown. There had been plans to expand it to the suburbs, but i guess those fell through when the economy went to crap in 2001.

oh those are awful, i remember when i was in LA and really all they do is divert all the traffic jams from the highway back further onto the ramps.

oh my, was there any option for a parking garage or underground parking instead? that complex looks like "the blob" taking over the city

Oh big surprise, the only light rail/streetcar/heavy rail in the state of ohio is cleveland's rapid. And even that is pretty low in ridership. ohio likes cars and roads, so thats what ohio will build. cincinnati really needs a light rail system, i think its one of the few cities that could greatly benefit from it. but wow 2.6 billion?!?! even the proposed subway in cleveland was cheaper than that. wow

Anyone seen this new development?? I remember noticing a building being demolished by the old arcade and BP tower area on Euclid. It kind of came in under the radar. Apparently they're in the process of building a 5 story parking garge with street retail. big deal However further plans indicate a 20 story residential tower to rise above it. i think thats going to be the tourist street that leads to north coast harbor... lol See what i dont inderstand is why they dont expand eastward towards Burk Lakefront Airport. Theres huge pieces of land (and parts being filled in) around the small craft run ways(to the north of them, not in the plane's path or anything) . It isnt like its a noisy airport... heh unless you count SkyFox lifting off from there every morning...

While only about half of the lakefront will be developed in the near future its still a major asset to keep this city alive. 3 new downtown districts would spur so much more growth in the city.

More details on it Cleveland-to-Ontario ferry on the horizon? The Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority is hoping to launch a giant ferry with capacity for 400 people and 250 cars per trip, making at least one round-trip daily from Cleveland to Port Stanley, Ontario. The authority says the proposed ferry would be modeled after a cruise ship with restaurants and movie theaters.

See i dont agree that smokers have the "right" to be able to smoke in public places. That would mean that non-smokers have the "right" to not have second-hand smoke around them. Both are ridiculous claims. I dont think it's the city's decision though. Maybe it should be a state thing because heh Cleveland is thinking about doing that as well. It was just in the paper the other day. Not sure if im for this issue all the way however. There has to be more to the issue than just banning smoking from public places. That doesnt solve anything. There also has to be a promotion of some sort in helping people quit smoking or deterring it because i think these "smoking bans" are a knee jerk reaction to the fact that Ohio ranks pretty high in the amount of smokers it has.

In the 1980s they originally planned to build a subway system from downtown to university circle, but that fell through. Which i find really unfortunate. Then they were going to bring back an interurban type system with trains in the center medium. That fell through as well Even more unfortunate. Now theres a plan for hybrid extended busses from Downtown to University Circle. However the few cities that have these tend to have them in addition to massive transportation systems... The one other plus is that they're redoing Euclid Avenue as in it wont look like a warzone anymore. Bike lanes, brick walkways for pedestrians. And if you've noticed Wade Lagoon in front of the art museum they're making it so that the waterway under Euclid Avenue is more visible. Not to mention getting rid of the telephone wires at public square (putting them underground) and updating the lighting along the avenue. So thats definately a plus.

Yea Columbus is strange, its so sprawled out in a very uncity sort of way. It makes its downtown look rather suburban for a city the size of San Francisco. I should have posted density numbers instead... if anyone knows them off the top of their heads?? ;o) Yea 0.8 is extremely small. I know Cleveland's is about 4, the size of Philly's downtown is about the same as Cleveland's except they have about 70,000 living downtown. So it says something about what Cleveland's potential is. Afterall every district in Cleveland used to have 40,000+ during the depression.

Cleveland: currently - 10,000 next census - 21,000 Columbus: currently - 3,800 next census - 6,000 Cincinnati: currently - 3,200 next census - ????? I couldnt find a projection for Cinci... Im wondering if its because it isnt noteworthy or what?? Anyway its kind of interesting that the reasons people are moving back downtown is to be near everything and its mostly empty nesters who dont want a big house anymore or "creative class" types who want to be in the cultural center. What i've noticed with Cleveland is that Downtown and a few other neighborhoods are flourishing while the other 40 districts are losing population. The metro area is gaining, but theres that "general city" area thats still losing population. Its like a city within a city within a city. This shockwave of poverty moves further out while its aftermath rebuilds itself back to its former glory. So strange (btw if you think 21,000 is a lot, Chicago is expected to have 150,000)

Is that the mindset in Columbus?? heh whens that light-rail system going up there?

Hmm with the way the airline industry is at the moment (traffic still not at pre-9/11 levels) i dont think another airline company would expand into Delta's place right away like that
