  1. downtown is comatose?? actually last i heard the city is on fire and the zombies are eating pedestrians left and right... which is of course further adding to the loss of population
  2. crap it was today, i was working... at Spaces Gallery... a local Cleveland establishment... that has a show up from Germany called "Shrinking Cities" and is all about urbanism...

hmm after 5pm?? thats kind of ridiculous, maybe after 1am the area isnt so great, but even then if you're going to take the rapid it is really safe, i've used the rapid many many times going from little italy to the airport and back late at night and have never had a problem. another thing to note is that while euclid is in the process of becoming much more transit friendly theres going to be a new rapid station much more conveniently located at mayfield rd in little italy in a few years as well. so the issues you're having right now are being addressed by the city. and yea like what was said before theres a lot of scared suburban people who work at the Cleveland Clinic who have all kinds of ridiculous misconceptions of Cleveland that are unfortunate to hear. what about biking to work? i know theres a lot of crazy construction, but thats definately something i know many people tend to do who work at the hospitals.
  6. awesome coverage! the trains in europe were so amazing, when i got back to the US i was in a mild public transit shock since i took all public transit back to my house in Cleveland from New Jersey...
  7. well AOL City Guide says this about Mirage: Perched on the West Bank of the Flats, Mirage on the Water is one of Cleveland's premier dance clubs. A 7,500-square foot marbled dance floor has room enough for hundreds to bump and grind to the loudest hip-hop and funk around. In summer, visitors enjoy the view offered by a retractable skylight roof, as well as patio seating on the bank of the Cuyahoga River. Trying to impress a date? Plush walls and flowers give the interior a touch of class not found at typical night spots. Mirage can also accommodate large parties. Those wanting to avoid the traffic can bring their boat to the bar, with dock space available. -- Todd Stumpf (Photo: Gretchen Gaede)

wow 'relocating to cleveland' has turned into "Babes'n'Chipotle" i think chipotle is moving due to the fact that its too close to Que Tal and Qdoba in University Circle
  10. Newark to me seems way too over-crowded and it seemed like there were a number of travelers on my Frankfurt flight back to the US that wished they landed elsewhere or were from Cleveland and wished Cleveland had more service. Given the fact that we've had consistent good ratings and we're expanding the runway this could be in our favor... I wonder when we find this out.

  12. Kosar to open steakhouse in Flats East Bank Posted by Henry J. Bernie Kosar will be bringing a steakhouse to Cleveland's Flats.Still beloved in Northeast Ohio, the Boardman native is the first announced tenant for the $230 million mixed-use neighborhood planned for the East Bank. Council to approve new tax breaks Posted by Susan Vinella May 21, 2007 14:09PM Categories: Breaking News Starting in 2010, developers must build more energy-efficient homes in Cleveland if their buyers are to qualify for 15-year property tax breaks, according to a new law expected to be passed by Cleveland City Council tonight. Council's long-awaited decision on tax abatement will be announced at a 5 p.m. news conference. The 21-member body is expected to approve the law at its 7 p.m. meeting. The law will keep in place 15-year tax abatements for buyers of new homes. But for developers to continue to offer the tax breaks to buyers after 2009, their homes must meet energy standards established by the federal government. A council spokesman said details on these standards were still being worked into the legislation this morning, and she could not comment. But an executive with Cleveland's Green Building Coalition said a home that meets "Energy Star" standards can be required to have better insulation --double-pane instead of single pane windows, for example. The coalition's Melanie Kintner Knowles said the extra cost of building a house to certain Energy Star standards is only about $2,000. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2007/05/council_to_approve_new_tax_bre.html

hmm the cheese factor gets a little bit high in there, but i think its a pretty good video. however ClevelandPlus is different than Cleveland+ and im not sure i like that so much. I mean i see that they're using some edgy shorthand by adding the "+" at the end of it but it sounds awkward.
  20. id say thats a mix of both, the most dangerous intersections in cleveland are probably the result of high traffic from commuters from the suburbs
  21. hmm well i'm still looking for a flash design/development position... compared to other cities Cleveland seems to be lacking in a lot of these types of jobs. So yea... and then i just found this article and i think we're talking high-tech manufacturing here, which makes a lot of sense. NorTech looks to play job matchmaker By CHUCK SODER 10:30 am, April 18, 2007 .......
  22. Painesville?? why not live closer in to Cleveland...? Ohio City, Tremont, Downtown, The Heights, University Circle, etc are all a whole lot more metropolitan and diverse. Well as far as conservative vs. liberal Cleveland is nothing like Cincinnati, it usually votes 70/30 in favor of democrats. but i dunno, Painesville is a further out suburb area thats a whole lot more blue-collar.

and thats probably what we would have done, unfortunately we had been traveling for about 22 hours and were not in any condition to drive the Penn Turnpike at 1 in the morning especially since we were still on German time and it felt more like 6am the next day. also might I add that there were no signs mentioning how to get to the Greyhound and the Amtrak area of the airport had no employees working. I had to find out about tickets and times by using a red phone... not even a computer for Amtrak.

ok as far as transportation in the united states I had a similar nightmare experience coming back from Germany a few weeks ago. The first leg of our journey home was from a small college town/village in the south of Germany called Scwaebisch Hall. about 29,000 people live here. The train station was an easy 10 minute walk across town to. It rivaled Cleveland's Amtrak station in that it had regular service. We got on a train headed for Heilbronn. We had a 10 minute window to switch trains. Easy, go over two platforms, "Mannheim". It was right there. We get on and in 5 minutes its moving. We arrive in Mannheim to see a highspeed train (kind of has an airplane nose on it) zoom in headed for Frankfurt Flughaufen (the airport). We get there right on time. Turns out our airplane is delayed 4 hours... because in the US there was chaos at JFK. So we wait until 2:30pm to fly. We get to Newark 9 hours later. Its 11:30pm for us, but in the US its 6:30pm. We finally get off the plane at 7:30. Only to find we missed our flight back to Cleveland. Well Newark and Cleveland are hub cities for Continental, right? and thats what we were flying on. Well... the next available seating on a flight was 10am to Cleveland. No one knew what to do at that airport. We were not going to be compensated for a hotel or anything. So Amtrak, right?? wrong. The next available Amtrak was for 9:58am headed to Chicago. It blows my mind that the largest city in the US's train service to the #3 city has less train service than a small medieval town in Germany. So we took Greyhound and ended up at home at about 11am the next day. We got to see several prisons on the way to Cleveland since Greyhound stations are located near the ones in Youngstown and Pittsburgh and our bus driver from the Pittsburgh to Cleveland segment was a total cynical asshole who treated us like we were prisoners/bad children. I dunno quite if this fits into this thread, but the fact that Ohio and the USA has all around bad transit options really REALLY shows compared to other countries.
