Electronic Merchant Systems plots move to downtown Cleveland By STAN BULLARD Downtown Cleveland will gain 180 more workers by mid-year as Independence-based Electronic Merchant Systems moves its headquarters to the 14-floor 250 West Huron Building at Tower City Center under a just-inked lease. EMS, which provides a suite of computerized financial services for retailers, will occupy all the fourth floor and part of the fifth of the skyscraper, according to a news release the company issued late Thursday, Jan. 4, with comments from Mayor Frank Jackson and Cavs owner Dan Gilbert. Gilbert operates the structure through his Detroit-based Bedrock Real Estate concern. The building is best known by its former moniker as the Chase Financial Plaza and dates from 1991. So this is federally funded through the Surface Transportation Program for urbanized areas with over 200k pop. I hadn't heard this was in the works although I'm sure it's needed. Hopefully this will prepare TC for its up coming projects with the K&D conversion and whatever Gilbert has planned. And below is what was supposed to be built on top of that structure which was proposed by former Cleveland Press owner Joseph Cole. From wiki: North Point Tower was proposed by Cleveland Press owner Joseph Cole in 1979. In March 1980, The North Point Plan was revealed as a 500-foot (150 m), 41-story office tower with a glass-enclosed atrium. There were plans to build a hotel on the site and an atrium displaying Press printing machines to the public. The tower would have been built on top of the 1957 structure. When the Cleveland Press folded on June 17, 1982, the North Point Plan did too. Construction of a more modest North Point I began in 1983, and the Cleveland Press building was demolished. It was completed in 1985. North Point II (North Point Tower) was added in 1990.

^Yes that has always been my question. This cantilevers system has barely changed in design over 150 years. It's usually the cause of the downtime of trains, something's always breaking, the parts are hard to get and it doesn't perform well in northern climates. And to me the overhead wires are ugly AF. At this point there must be a DMU or electric hybrid that can handle our capacity. But I know nothing about trains so I'll let someone else explain why it's just not a solution for us. And this probably isn't the time to explore my idea of turning the Red Line/Waterfront Line into a BRT system...

But during an interview this week, the real estate company's chief executive officer said he doesn't want uncertainty about one of downtown Cleveland's most central - and complex - properties to drag on much longer. So a couple of years ago I floated the idea ( see what I did there) about moving the USS COD over to the old Coast Guard Station (page 40 of this thread). With the possible move of the COD in the future just wanted to bring that up again. The Coast Guard station is undergoing renovations now with more to come. I am saying it could be a component of something bigger there as an added attraction to whatever use the station finds. Below is a mock-up that another forumer put together at the time.

Well the idea for using an existing building as the terminal would be to save costs. If you look around the cost of a new passenger terminal is astronomical. So using the IX Center could save a lot of money. Let's face it that building stands to host the Auto Show, other smaller ones could be moved downtown. We would just need to find a home for the Auto Show.

Agreed that a discussion for a new passenger terminal should be in the near future. But with the cost probably being well over 1 billion dollars other options need to be considered. My thought would be to use the existing IX Center as the new passenger terminal. It's an empty shell that could be converted for probably a third of a new build. And it has a Ferris wheel! Anyway below is something I did a couple of years ago.
