Sears / Kmart News
^I am not sure but I believe that the optical department is simply an independent optical firm which uses Sears name and facilities for a fee.

Moving to Shaker Square
My experience (friends' apartments) is that while north of the square is preferred, it is like anyplace else...it depends upon the building owner. Many of the apartments north of square are beautiful and well maintained and certain buildings should be reserved for college students (if you know what I mean). Again, it depends on the owner like any place else. About 20 years ago a buddy of mind had a place just south of the square which was an architectural gem. However, while the building was clean, it did need updating even at that time (bath rooms and kitchens). I am curious if any major work has been done on the building since then.

Cleveland: Downtown: Playhouse Square Development and News
^Cannot disagree with you that the hotel at the corner of Euclid and 18th is a cheap hotel (is it currently a Comfort Inn?) or at least looks like it...however, it is funny that at one time (when it was Swingos) it was the place where all the rock glitterati use to stay when in Cleveland (the really big boys like the Stones) as mentioned in Cameron Crowe's movie "Almost Famous".

By the way, I believe MTS has a super nice place....maybe he will rent out a spare bedroom.

Moving to Shaker Square
I am surprised. While I never lived in one of their buildings I always thought Montlack had a good reputation.

Who was attacking Symon online for saying it was a bad location in Avon...it was a bad location...I guess people from Avon.

Really just meant the upper east side below the 90s

Cleveland: Historic Photos
None of the buildings that were located at the TT site in the early 20th century, given the prominent location, would have survived in any major American city. Hell, huge sections of midtown and uptown Manhattan has been rebuilt 3 times since then.

Cleveland: Historic Photos
I have always been under the impression that the buildings that were demolished for the Terminal complex were substandard, bordering on slums. I certainly would not say the skyscrapers destroyed the square. There was plenty of other retail downtown at that time and for years to come. I cannot believe you would say Higbees and what was in its day a premiere hotel added nothing to the square (not to mention Cleveland's icon)

Cleveland Area TOD Discussion
While the entire hotel is a bit of a disappointment (thank god it is only an infill building) the Mayfield side really sucks, especially since it is right across the street from MOCA. A weak little side entrance with the garbage bin right next to it. One of the only times I can say I am glad the building does not go right up to the street.

Sears / Kmart News
19 straight quarters of sales declines...as argued by many in the other thread, it is a dying company and would not have brought much to Ohio (if it even lasts the next 7-8 years). It was silly to even chase after it.

KJP...I am waiting with great anticipation your reaction to your buddy Brent Larkins post (and I assume article in the PD) on Cleveland.com

Cleveland: Midtown: Development and News
^Looks like he still needs to secure financing to make this happen. Like suggested in the article, I don't care how much money is put into the renovation, given the scale of the area it may still be the biggest eyesore on the block, just not derelict and vacant as it is now. I don't know if a park is a good idea like desired by some Midtowners, but a new 3-4 story building on the site might fit in better. If it is renovated, he must do a "good job".

Cleveland: Flats Developments (Non-Stonebridge or FEB)
The ad is very confusing to me. It almost reads like they are looking for a developer for a building designed by somebody else. Also do not like the design, especially at this location.

^Really? What sense does that make. EDIT: Sorry...I miss read the above post. I thought it said Flats East Bank. My bad.

Akron - Highland Square - October 2011
Market, from downtown Akron for about 4 miles west (before you get to the one of the biggest strip malls messes in Ohio) is one of the best urban streets in the state in my opinion. When ever I had something going on in downtown Akron I would always drive back to 77 via Market rather than hoping on the freeway downtown just to soak up the street scape.

Of course we don't know the facts at this point but the first thing that popped into my head was "this is what happens on construction projects in a third world country"....I mean it is not like this is some kind of complex design.

Cuyahoga County: Corruption Probe
^^^A friend plead guilty (to one count of lying to FBI...you know the charge you are left with when you ain't got nothing else) in connection with the probe and he got six months. I am sure the max penalty is higher but I don't know what it is...I would imagine somebody going to trial and being convicted will get a stiffer sentence for the charge than one having plead guilty to it.

Cleveland Rapid Rail Construction Projects (Non-Service Issues)
^seems to be an error...what other station would be moved and why? Just need one station to serve uptown. More correctly, the two UC stations are being renovated (with 120 being moved to Mayfield...really not that great a distance)

^I would agree with most of what you said but shopping along Euclid was still pretty strong (although not like the 50's and 60's). Still had Halle's, Higbees and May Co. and lots of smaller stores (Bonds, Richman Bros, lots of other smaller chains and independents) and even stores like Woolworths and Kresgess (spelling). I think Halles closed in 82.

Cleveland: University Circle (General): Development and News
Great news....RTA just got 12 million for Little Italy Rapid Station. In my opinion one of the most important aspects of UC continued redevelopment (and I thought it would never happen).

Dayton to Cincinnati Commute
Note CFDAY indicated he is staying "just north of Dayton" and commuting to downtown Cincy. It is not like he is even south of the city, say in Centerville. That kind of drive would kill me after a while, especially given inclement weather as mentioned by other posters.
