San Francisco - September 2010
Really, how can you say anything bad about SF...America's premiere city (sorry New York). Ok,,,I will try...as one of America's 5-6 "international cities" I have always found the architecture in the central business district sorta strangely lacking, especially when compared to Chicago and New York. The district is well put together, pedestrian oriented and attractive, but very few "stunning" buildings. My theory is that much of the district was developed gang busters from the early 60's to early 80's with many international style buildings (generally nice ones) and then slowed down (of course not compared to Cleveland or Cincinnati but to other major cities) in terms of major high rises due to citizens concerns that SF was becoming "Manhattanized". Lots of great arch. in this country come about in the boom years of the 90's and first part of the 21st century. Clearly there was development in the SF business district during this time, but really the skyline in that part of town does not look that much different from the early 80's (something you could not say about Chicago or say Boston for example). Other than that, American paradise. Lucky to live there if you can afford it.

Time to jump all over Cipermann. He can be very unpredictable in my opinion.

Columbus: Hollywood Casino
This is great. I love the drama. And with the added benefit of keeping lawyers fully employed.

Minneapolis - January 2011
Good tour. Thanks for the pics. One of my favorite towns, especially its neighborhoods. Strange that they never really have embraced the river, even today...may be that it is too industrial.

The Ohio State University Buckeyes Football Discussion
Am I missing something? Did Tressel actually lie to investigators? From everything I have read so far he withheld information he had for months which he should have reported to officials at OSU. This is a serious offense pursuant to the terms of his contract with the university and NCAA rules and guidelines.

Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
Again, matte of taste but I like the way the MM fits on the mall and am liking the glass portions. Interested in how will look on a winters night.

Cleveland Area: American Greetings HQ relocation?
I am still with McCleveland that they will end up in Beachwood (or some part of Chagrin Highlands) for the reasons stated. Can't see where the undeveloped portion of Crocker Park would be large enough for AG headquarters, especially given all the parking they will need.

Columbus: Attracting Young Professionals
^I was waiting for the Cleveland shot in this thread that has absolutely nothing to do with the city. So in response I would say that I would rather live in a declining Cleveland than a growing Columbus any day. Please don't ask me to list the one hundred reason why.

Never been to the Woodmere shop but employees at the CH Stone Oven just seem so serious. Not unfriendly or grumpy, just not much fun compared to other places. Their food is good though.

^The building on the corner of Ontario and Prospect was a Catholic bookstore for years and then occupied by the Stafford law firm when the store went out of business a few years ago. Staffords sold it for 5 million (I think they bought it for like 1 million) after owning it for just a few years which, knowing the Staffords, clearly demonstrates that there is no God.

THIS ARTICLE HAS ME ABSOLUTELY SEEING RED. We have discussed these developments before in a small way previously on this board (at the time of the purchased) in the casino thread, I believe, with our naive little fingers crossed. This is a good article which goes into much detail and it is not pretty. I get the feeling Frangos wants to now demo not just the Stanley Block but almost everything he owns between Ontario and E. 4th for a large parking garage (and probably surface for the short term). If this is what the casino is giving us then stick it in Streetsboro. The city and Gateway has to prevent this at all cost. This is something that is going to motivate my lazy butt and I will find out what I can do on a personal level, no matter how small, to oppose this.

Cleveland: Downtown: Euclid & 9th Tower / Schofield Building Redevelopment
^I agree...article does not make sense given the timing of the original announcement and the date of the article. Also, really not much meat to the article...it left me more confused than anything.

Governor John Kasich
I wonder if the national GOP is burning the lines to Columbus to make sure this gets passed before April so that the referendum will be on the 2011 ballot rather than 2012 (with the fear that Ohio the swing state will go Dem with the base energized on this issue). This is all very interesting.

^^In my mind it is not just the siding materials (much of which is awful). The design itself is suburban chic, the windows look cheap and out of place and the floor heigts seem strange. This could have just been done better.

^The cheap look of the Euclid Commons Buildings has been commented upon and lamented numerous times in this thread and others. What bothers me the most is that these buildings front on Cleveland's main street. I can only guess that, of course cost, has much to do with it and the fact that CSU was moving into uncharted waters with the new dorms and did not want to over reach (it appears they have been very popular so it would have been nice if they did go the extra mile). I also might venture that perhaps much has to do with the fact that the dorms were developed privately rather that it being solely a CSU project (designed and built like the student center of education building). I would imagine CSU had some say but who knows how much. I think the city dropped the ball here more than anyone...should have demanded higher standards, especially on Euclid. Hopefully the new dorms on Chester will make us all proud.

Cleveland: Hotels, Conventions, and Tourism News & Info
^An Aloft is planned for the Flats which is a member of the same family as Westin but of course not an actual Westin. ^^100 mil is a bundle but it would probably take that much to turn the Crown Plaza into a Westin brand, although you would think you could build a whole new hotel at that price. Maybe they are just planning on tearing it down and starting from scratch...although like you suggest maybe your friend does not have his facts right...100 mil is a huge investment.

Governor John Kasich
I am in no way a supporter of scaling back collective bargaining for public sector employees, but I would have to agree (based on first hand experience) that it is very difficult to fire a police officer or firefighter (would not know if this is true in regards to teachers). If fact the statement that they almost have to commit a crime to get fired is really not that far from the truth. In addition, firefighters and police officers regularly file lawsuits (most times with the support of their unions but not always) if they are indeed terminated (even after losing in arbitration...many are 1983 civil rights actions) and these must wear the political subdivisions down to the point where they really are hesitant to terminate for cause.

Cleveland: VA Hospital Expansion
^Sometimes you have to believe that those individuals who plan and/or design such tall garages have never been in one in their lives or have always been favored with VIP parking on the first level. Nothing drives me more insane than having to go round and round from the top of tall parking garage wondering when this will ever end. Moreover, it leads to drivers wanting to drive faster than the posted or reasonable limit, resulting in a dangerous situation in such tight spaces.

Cleveland: VA Hospital Expansion
^^Actually, in my opinion the dorms look a hell of a lot better than those "things" going up on Euclid at CSU but that's not too difficult a challenge.
