Cleveland: VA Hospital Expansion
Thanks for the pics. I try to drive by every 3-4 weeks to measure progress....it is usually from the south going north. Yesterday I drove by in the opposition direction, coming south along MLK and was really stunned at how much I like the hospital and how it adds to the city. Also, I have mentioned this before, I think the administration building is one of the best infill buildings in the city. Very pleased by most of this development and hope there is continued growth in the E. 105th corridor.

Governor John Kasich
^^"don't see him saying anything in the phone call that differed from what he's said in public" Hmm...that is the same "spin control" statement that is coming out of Walker's office (wonder how long it took to come up with that one). I did not read the transcripts, but from a couple of news reports I read there is stuff that I would not want out there...like we were thinking of planting trouble makers in with the protesters but decided not to do it (that sounds a little KGB to me, or at least Nixon Dirty Tricks). I guess they believe they get points for not following through. Also saying they were going to try to lure the Democrats back with promises of talks (something the Democrats requested to get the ball rolling again) and then do a sneak attack vote since they were in the capitol Building. They are just shrugging this off as politics but it seems greasy to me...certainly would not trust somebody in the future if they pulled that one (actually it is just plain lying because they clearing had no interest in negotiations...be a man and say that). Seeems like it is really fun to be in Wisconsin. Interesting that Walker is chatting with Kasich. If I were Kasich I would be doing what the governor of Indiana (Walker's alledged mentor) is doing and keep my distance.

Agree with Punch....but also don't see construction beginning on the new casino for a couple of years, but not for the reasons suggested by Hootenany. While I am sure they have been doing preliminary design work for some time, clearly the focus right now is going to be on the Higbee renovations and getting it up and running. Moreover, the Huron site has many design challenges (below parking, proximity to the river, connection to the Higbee Building, attempting to limit disruptions to TC during construction and the fact that they are at least talking about doing something unique on the site, to name a few). I think this means it may be quite some time before the various professionals (architectural and engineering) have a workable design in hand and then of course the inevitable work needed to gear up for construction.

Petersburg, KY: Creation Museum: Development and News
While a pain in the butt, if a refund is not given I would file a action in Kentucky's version of small claims court. The ticket purchase would be considered a contract which was not fulfilled by one of the parties (that being admission to the museum). Unfortunately, under most common law contract law, damages would not be much more than the price of the ticket (in Ohio they would also probably be awarded court costs but not attorney fees which is why I would file in small claims court where most people represent themselves...still a lot of trouble to get $71.00 back).

According to Taste Section of PD, Michael is openig another B-Spot in Westlake (Crocker Park where Agave is now located). I think this is the 3rd (others in Woodmere and Strongsville). I believe he has been scoping out Westlake for a while.

Cleveland: Retail News
^I think it has been mentioned in another thread that it is opening in March or April (although it does look like there is still much work to be done on the first floor).

Actually the reply could have been quite simple. The constitution says it has to be built downtown on a particular parcel. End of story.

^Believe me that is already spent in everybody's mind and it ain't going to be for any frickin park.

^I would like to see the entire length of Huron narrowed by at least one lane when the casino is built. It seems too much like super highway now and is often difficult to cross. With so many people in the area they are going to need to calm it down.

^I recall this being asked previously on this board and not sure anybody really commented. Not sure what the answer is, but I doubt the area will turn into anything special, as that stretch is the service area for those office buildings. I think there might even be a limited amout of VIP parking behind those doors. I don't see outdoor cafes popping up anytime soon. Some minor street scaping might help.

Cleveland: University Circle (General): Development and News
Despite the deference reflected in the article, I bet there is dart board with Johnson's face on it in the UCI offices. They have been trying to develop this parcel for years. I run into the president of XYZ on occasion (although I have not seen him for more than a month) and I will try to get his "inside" take (in other words not filtered for the press) if I see him. I do know, after speaking to him in the past, that he was very excited to do this project and we specifically talked about for sale housing not working on that site at this time and the demand for high end rentals for students who are only here a sort period of time (as he mentioned in the article). It is not like he is not experienced and committed to the area given his Circle 118 development. Despite this, why would you want to throw any unnecessary road blocks in the way of a suburban developer when it is so much easier to just build on some virgin farm land in Medina than the city.

327 what are you talking about...the Geis project (as evidenced by smith's pictures) is almost 50% complete and I would hardly consider it light industrial.

Cleveland: Public Square Redesign
I for one would think it would be great if we stop referring to transit riders as undesirables in this thread.
-
Cleveland: Public Square Redesign
I don't necessarily agree with the idea of a transit center on Public Square but I definitely believe a tall building could be built on top of one with no problem.

Anybody know what average wages generally are? I know they will vary depending upon skill and position but lets say a black jack dealer.

I see...you mean the owner of Anatoli Cafe and Alatuka are the same. My bad.

Cleveland: Restaurant News & Info
^Are you saying the owners of Anatoli Cafe and Balaton are the same? Are you sure about that. That would seem very strange to me. By the way...great Hungarian on the west side. Little Budapest on Center Ridge in Westlake. It has been there for a while but I just ate there for the first time a couple of weeks ago and have been back twice since.

That is why I am sorta nervous about the design...right now they are saying all the right things and using the proper "urban" buzz words, but that may not necessarily translate into what we on this board would like to see in terms of a finished product. If you look on the Cincy casino thread, the developer there claims he is building something unique, unlike other casinos in the nation (which often are just huge boxes surrounded by parking and flashy signage), with pedestrian friendly elements...but apparently his design team's interpretation of this concept is not in line with the local design review board which has many concerns with it (initial renderings do look "messy" and unfocused to me). I would imagine we will probably have to wait another 5-6 months before we start seeing anything concrete in terms of design...I would believe the team is focused on the Higbee Building in the short term.

Cleveland: Cleveland Institute of Art Expansion
^I may be wrong but my reading of the "blurb" is that the 55 million is for the whole project and not just the new addition...that is campus consolidation and renovation of the older building which was just completed.
