  1. The thing is that those opposed to rail are not opposed to it because of speed. This is a factor to press on people, especially the unimformed who are only taking a passing glance at the issue, because they know it is something that will stick with the uneducated. It is quite canny and of course something that is done in politics on other issues on a regular basis.
  2. ^^Roads...I bet the sewers are the worse in the city....any development would require lots of help from the city for infrastructure improvements.
  3. ^^Ferchill answered my question in a PD article...."it is not real at this point"...his own words.
  4. By the way...I am not knocking the concept...I posted quite some time ago questioning why there were not more speculative office projects going up in UC taking advantage of companies that would want to be near the Clinic, UH and the other institutions.
  5. So does he have the $$$ for this or this is something he hopes to do if all the chips fall his way. He does have a history of making proposals in the press and not following through for one reason or another (and blaming others for the failure to follow through when the real reason may be that it was too risky in the first place). Also...is the library on board or is this another wish....do they have plans for another building like the city does for the 3rd District headquarters?
  6. Sigh...too much dreaming on this board lately and not enough news...I personally need this recession to be over so I can get my Urban Ohio fix like the old days.
  7. I did not observe anything new. Am I missing something? Could you please direct me.
  8. ^No, look at page 2 of sports (at least as of the time I type this). No posts since Jan of 2010
  9. ^No reason to get upset. It appears for what ever reason these are the type of people who feel the need to comment on these forums. It would be great if somebody would do a psychology study of these types since it does not seem to be limited to Cleveland.com. If you read the Cincy threads, posters there are always complaining about the needless and mindless negative comments made are the local board which is similar to Cleveland.com. I would imagine that this is a similar trend on these boards across the country. Bottom line...these are not the people you would have fun with at a cocktail party.
  10. ^^Well that is just ridiculous. Obama comes from CHICAGO ILLINOIS (the city and state poster childs for corrupt government) and he was elected president by a landslide. Cleveland will not get the convention for the simple fact it does not have enough hotel rooms for a Democratic convention, especially a large flagship hotel.

Not to go to far off topic...I was visiting Pittsburgh a few years ago and went to a Cubs-Pirates game on a beautiful Sunday afternoon (by the way...I love PNC Park...one of the best in the nation...hard to say being from Cleveland)...the crowd was about 28,000 and easily 30% were Cubs fans. I was very surprised...loved it that the Pirates won in extra innings after a botched play by a Cubs outfielder. ^By the way...having not won in 100 years and and still being such loyal fans is my definition of a great fan.

^The Brownstones of something or other...There are actually 2-3 units for sale currently including the front unit of the church which fronts on Euclid Hts. Blvd...however, I think all of the units originally sold for well above 350,000 (I would say anywhere from 450,000 to 650,000) and even in this real estate market probably still have list prices which exceed the stated budget.

^Ouch, ouch, ouch...the person in question is 50....I don't know many people who are 50 who would like to be called "elderly".
  14. ^For a struggling mall (???) it sure is hard to find parking. Last two times I was there I had to circle and circle.
  15. ^food should ALWAYS be fresh in a restaurant no matter what time it is served. Delicious is a plus as well.
  16. ^^Interesting change over the years. When I graduated from college people who did not have jobs but wanted to live in a particular city did not move home for 4 months to 2 years and then move out. They simple moved to the city immediately, took whatever job they could in that city (even low level retail), and then looked for a permanent job in thier field from there. Maybe everybody was just more mature or more adventerous then.
  17. looks like Republicans are idiots in other states as well
  18. ^^I was being generous suggesting 3-5 thousand.
  19. ^Because they will draw between 3-5 thousand per game and that will look pathetic in Browns Stadium, and people will comment on that over and over. Not good for school or team morale.
  20. Forget unique attractions....how many Clevelanders (including those who live in the suburbs) travel to Akron for work (daily) or business (often) and visa versa. My God it is 40 minutes from Public Square to downtown Akron. I personally traveled to Akron for court 4-5 times a month and additional times for depositions and client meetings. There is no divide.
  21. Well clearly this is just turning into an Akron thread rather than addressing the question. Why is that?
  22. Why in the world would people in Cleveland resent Akron or Akronites (since that is how the question is piosed)? Most people I know who live in Hudson work in downtown Cleveland so I don't understand dwirthwein's comments. Everybody I personally know who lives in Hudson, Bath or Copley (including my two sisters) use to live in Cuyahoga County including the Heights area so I cannot imagine they identify with Akron over Cleveland. When I went to college ( a long time ago) I would hear things about Akronites being mad about the perception by many that it was just a suburb of Cleveland (this really was not true then), but with the sprawl we have today the two metro areas have basically merged so I cannot see how any one (except "the King" when he is trying to take people's mind off what a jerk he was with his whole discussion show) even gives it a thought.
  23. ^up thread there is a PD article which details how the casino will be laid out, with river view plazas and the like....it will be built on a 5 story parking garage and rise about 60 feet above Huron.
  24. While there are certainly deficiencies with the center for one reason or another (of course keeping within the budget is a major factor), square footage perhaps being one, I really think Cleveland is fortunate given the nature of the facility. That is the fact that the facility is underground. Unlike many other major American cities we will not have what is basically a huge box or warehouse with blank walls in the center of our downtown. Even many convention center where design was not an after thought (which are really rare) tend to be hulking structures which impede street life in the general area of the facility.
