Cleveland: Midtown: Development and News
You guys are correct. Per article in PD today the city bought the lot on the south side of the street for parking. We can only hope that it won't be surface parking, but rather an interesting garage with street level retail, but I think I am being a dreamer here. Never had a real problem with the hospital (not yet at least...have to see the design), but this really irks me.

New to Cleveland
Many young professionals in Cleveland Heights, although a lot of students also (but primarily grad students so they tend to be older). You will find a variety of housing in the Hts. Much of it is old but well maintained. Of course the better maintained the more costly. Same with new housing (although more limited...tends to be more expensive condos and townhouses...if they are being rented by their owners they tend to be a bit pricy. My next door neighbor rented his for $1600). By the way, I agree with what was said about downtown above. Lived downtown for 2 years and never had a problem with crime. In fact worked downtown for 23 years and was there at all hours and I personally had no problems and can recall very few problems experienced by friends (although it of course happens like it does EVERYWHERE).

Sausalito, CA
Once too a bike ride over the Golden Gate Bridge and into Sausalito. Was only there for about an hour and probably only saw 10% of the city, but thought I was in heaven.

I won't go into all of the reasons why, but I don't think it will be built either.

Cleveland Orchestra News & Info
^May be true, in fact it could be very true...I am in no position to say....but it also could be read as good old Gary covering his ass...if we are not making $$$ as an orchestra don't blame me as executive director...it is the city. And by the way I, as executive director, have done a very good job of convincing my board of this so my job is pretty secure.

Cleveland: Filling in Euclid Avenue
^I believe Mann or his companies own these properties as well. As I suggested above, if he is defaulting on his mortgage loan on the CAC Building, it is very unlikely that he has the $$$ to go forward any time soon on these buildings.
-
Cleveland: Filling in Euclid Avenue
^Yes, I think I read it in the PD or Crains. Just checked the Cuyahoga County court docket and it appears to involve the CAC building. Case is just plodding along. Case Management Conference scheduled for early November. Mann is representing himself at this point. If I recall the article he said gave the old (but true) recession excuse. I would imagine he and his companies are not in a position to go forward on other Euclid properties if he cannot even keep up on payments on the CAC building.

Cleveland: Filling in Euclid Avenue
Isn't Mann being sued for defaulting on loans in connection with one or more of the Euclid properties he owns? As I recall he is having trouble paying on his financing to purchase properties, so I don't believe that he is in any position to obtain financing to begin work on renovations.

Cincinnati & Young Professionals
I must say, as a Clevelander and Miami grad I am very surprised by the comments made in this thread, and others, about the image that people in the Cincy region allegedly have of the city. If it is true, it is a wholesale change from the attitudes of Cincinnatians during the 70's and early 80's (not too long ago). I remember being overwhelmed by how positive people from Cincy (and most of the people I knew where from the suburbs) were about all of of the city. In fact, it tended to border on the obnoxious. Fellow Clevelanders were very jealous, but we thought much of bragging was justified when we visited the city (primarily Mt. Adams which use to blow us away and downtown, but other parts as well). People I graduated with from all over, in all fields, were very anxious to take jobs in Cincy. Downtown seemed vibrant and again people seemed very proud. I guess I am very confused by the current attitudes if true.

Cleveland: Downtown: Euclid & 9th Tower / Schofield Building Redevelopment
^What is so "new" about it. It was proposed in 1979 and never went anywhere. Agree it has nothing to do with the redevelopment of the current building. My question is, is there anything concrete about what is going in...I know there have been hotel suggestions but are those just board rumors. Will it go back to office or perhaps housing is in the works?

Will the 668 restaurant be packed with models just like Balthazar?

Cleveland: Flats East Bank
^That is certainly true but that was the old flats. The original Wolstein plan was a mixed use development (I guess it still is but in phases) that included a major office building, a hotel primarily serving that building, a local movie theater, a grocery store, health club, some retail and significant housing, all pretty much local in nature. There was to be some green space and entertainment venues but not enough that I would consider it a "tourist destination" like say a Baltimore Inner Harbor. Clearly Wolstein was, and is, more interested in developing a new neighborhood.

Cleveland: Flats East Bank
^Not quite sure the original concept was suppose to be a "tourist destination". Really thought the majority of it was for Clevelanders.

MIAMI UNIVERSITY
Edale, since you are so "big" into rankings (which I am not...they tend to be subjective and not very scientific) Business Weeks' fourth annual survey of business schools ranks Miami's b -school the 6th best undergrad program among public schools in the nation...18th best of all schools (public and private). I am sure Ink could give you further examples of other programs since he just graduated (when I was there systems was one of the best programs in the nation as was paper tech). Pretty "decent" huh. You will find that in most professional schools (law and med) in the midwest Miami will be the second or third ranked feeder school (after that particular school itself). I went to Case law school and year after year Miami is the second ranked feeder school (after Case)...I am pretty sure that is also the case at OSU law school and probably UC. I have been in the business world for more than 25 years. Employers drool over Miami grads...you may not get the job but going to Miami gets you in the door.

Cleveland: Flats East Bank
Actually Greyrat I just read some of your past posts and I take it back, I did mean to be pissy.
-
MIAMI UNIVERSITY
Edale, you can certainly quibble about rankings or where Miami stands in comparison to other schools, but for you to make the blanket statement "...academically speaking, Miami is not all that great" clearly demonstrates that you're somewhat ignorant on the subject.
-
Cleveland: Flats East Bank
Greyrat I hate to sound pissy but do you even know how to read? This has all been explained in countless threads and posts.

Cleveland: Flats East Bank
Does anybody have a clue where the retail component is going to go in this revised plan? Wasn't much of it suppose to go on the first floors of the housing components (I could be wrong) in the original plan. If that is the case where is it going now that housing is in future phases? I guess the entertainment portion of Phase One could still go along the river like originally sited. The rendering in the PD only shows the office building and hotel as far as I can see.
