  1. ^Mayday...thanks...I don't know exactly why I assumed he was a female. Anyway, you are correct...I thought that post would have everybody scratching their heads as usual.
  2. ^If either institution has serious plans to redevelope that corner I would also like to see them go across the street and gobble up the gas station and fire station.
  3. ^Okay, before everybody goes crazy with that one I think she meant to post "Just like the Gaza Strip 'or' Vincent Street". And what I believe she is referring to is Cedar Center in University Hts and South Euclid which is going to be demolished and redeveloped. It was often kiddingly referred to as the Gaza Strip due to its many Jewish businesses and patrons. I believe the Vincent Street reference is to Short Vincent between East 9th and 6th which at one time was a hopping entertainment district in Cleveland.
  4. ^^Skyways are not "cool", just necessary sometimes. They do tend to marginalize street life in my opinion and many cities with extensive systems constantly debate this point. The best systems have retail available at the skywalk level.
  5. I like the design also. Given its height and boxiness, it, in tandem with the Medical Mutual Building across the street, make a nice "frame" and gateway to the remainder of East Ninth street as you head towards the lake from the top of the street.

^The director of the museum was on WCPN's "Around Noon" show last week and discussed the project. She said they are still in their "quiet phase" trying to raise $$ and are apparently only showing the design to potential donors (the big buck guys) to see if they can raise enough before they go public. She said this process is quite common (which it is). They don't want to release the design with high expectations and then find out they cannot raise the $$ to complete the project. She said they are encouraged by the response to the design so far and I think she said the have about one third pledged, although I am not sure. If I recall, when it was revealed a design was in hand last fall (September), the quiet phase was only suppose to last a couple of months and here it is almost 7 months later. I too am itching to get a look at this. Maybe I should consider donating a mil or so so I can get a peek.
  7. ^Yep. After 18 years in Solon they opened up a second location in Westlake at the intersection of Crocker and Center Ridge Rd. Just called "Daddona's" not "Jimmy Daddona's", but same menu.
  8. Carrollton has the advantage of being pretty isolated so the business district around the square is still pretty lively (compared to many other similarly situated towns closer to larger cities and highway "big box-ville") The court house does look nice from the outside but the interior is not particularly outstanding. The judge (the county has only one Common Pleas judge) is a great guy.
  9. The Trumbull County Courthouse is great.
  10. "Eaton moving to Independence or North Carolina isn't gonna keep a family in Kinsman out of poverty" Well it ain't gonna help.
  11. Barneyboy...I cannot believe you are that big a fan of Stonebridge. From my perspective, the buildings that have been constructed so far ignore the street and are hardly pedestrian friendly due to first floor parking garages, blank walls and had to find entrances. Also, while I have only been inside on a couple of occasions, I was very surprised by the quality of the workmanship and materials used. I was also surprised that they owners were allowing a business to be run from an apartment (it was not a home office...it was a residential apartment being used as an office) or were not bright enough to know this was going on. If the designs and construction of FEB in any way mimics Stronebridge than I will be very disappointed.
  12. I generally like what I am seeing. Really cannot see the comparison to Baltimore's Inner Harbor. That is far more of a tourist destination than what is currently proposed for the FEB. FEB, as currently proposed has nice mix of residential, entertainment, retail and office without any one thing really dominating (gee, just like a real city). Residential has a nice mix of rental and owner housing (with the plan to start as low as 200,000 which is very affordable for this type of development) and a hotel which may be unique to Cleveland. A grocery store which will service the residents and people living in the warehouse district (again, less like Inner Harbor"s tourist domination) and a movie theatre which I also imagine will be most attractive to downtown residents (but hopefully will also attract others). The retail is not concentrated in a "festival market" but is on a variety of walkable streets with residential above (again just like a real city). The "entertainment venues" seem to be placed in the right spots up along the river (just like the old flats) and again don't seem to dominant. The green space are just the right amount for residents and visitors. While there is a lot of planned office space (much more than origanally planned) it is on the fringes and in the case of the Tucker Ellis building almost touches the rest of the downtown office market. I don't see the suggested corporate feel. A nice mix and certainly not like Inner Harbor (no museums or festival market). Very anxious to see the actual designs but I think we can expect much better than the suggested "Parma midrise" look. However, mid rise is very appropriate for this location. MTS I agree with many of your observations
  13. I was having breakfast this morning and at the next table was Peter Lawson Jones sitting with an older gentleman with wavy gray hair (he drives a white Hummer as I later found out in the parking lot if that helps anybody with an identification). I do not know who the guy was but my best guess based on what I could see at the table and bits of conversation I heard that it was either Bob Price or somebody else from K and D. I did my best to eavesdrop (as I pretended to read my paper) but it was difficult due to some noisy kids at another table. I did observe many photos of the Ameritrust Rotunda which Jones seemed particularly interested in as well a packet of about 50 documents which they were going through quickly. It was hard to see but many were design schemes (it looked like of various parts of downtown including 668) and drawings and the like. I did see the words K & D on one of them. Again it was had to hear and I certainly did not want to appear obvious. I heard Peter better since he has a deep voice and was facing me. I did hear things like "Convention Center will be resolved by the end of this month". "What are your plans for retail". Something about "demolition". "Can we arrange a tour sometime towards the end of March as I am very busy this coming week". Again it was hard to put anything in context but it appeared to be some sort of sales pitch. Since I really cannot venture what was actually being said the most interesting thing I guess is that the meeting was taking place at all.
  14. ^Read the Cincinnati threads. The posters there are always complaining about ignorant comments about Cincy by suburbanites. I am sure this happens all around the country. Why put down Cleveland in this regard?
  15. With Max's Deli pulling out of the project (silly of them to attempt the move in the first place since they had such a great location before...of course who knows what other business reasons may have existed for the proposed move) this makes this mediocre shopping strip even more bland as Max's was going to be one of the few places that gave the place a local flavor.

Okay, so now I am really confused (by oengus1963's post). Does this mean that the new construction on the vacant lot fronting Euclid is not going to happen (see the pictures at the beginning of this thread)? I was under the impression that the law firm was going into this new building. The rehab I was asking about (including the new floor) is behind the vacant lot and does not front Euclid. It is now suggested above that the law firm is going into the rehab (although another poster suggested the building was being rehabbed for the Center for Families and Children). Again, is the new construction at 4600 Euclid going to happen?

^Thanks for the information. So to anwer my original question, this recent construction has nothing to do with the proposed 4600 Building which fronts Euclid (on the vacant lot (to be built by Heartland for the law firm). I wonder if the 4600 new construction project is still a go?
  18. What is all this about Johnny's closing? I have heard nothing about this and find it hard to believe. As mentioned above, Johnny's Bistro did close and now it is "Crop" and is owned by the same guys who own Johnnys.
  19. ^Thanks. I just glanced at the thread 'cause I have to run but I did not see any reference to the older building they are working on now, just a discussion of the building fronting Euclid (again maybe there is a mention, I just don't have time to read it in detail). Again, is the older building in anyway related to the newer three story building where the law firm is going. If not does anybody know what is going in the re-habbed building as it will clearly be completed first? Glad to see work on the vacant building.
  20. I know this project (projects) has been discussed before but I not sure on which thread. I noticed that work is proceeding on the vacant building next to the Agora on Euclid (about 4 stories just past 40th going east...behind the vacant lot fronting Euclid where a building burned down about 2 years ago). In addition to gutting the building (all the windows are out) they seem to be adding at least one additonal story. Does anybody know what is going on here? Also, is it related to the building that is (was) suppose to front Euclid (I believe a law firm was going to build there once Euclid Corridor construction was completed if that is still the case). Thanks.

^Why should it be any day now? What do you know?
  22. As Ink mentioned in his introduction, during my days in Oxford the only reason you went to College Corner was to buy booze.
  23. ^You really have to get over the casino thing. It just ain't gonna happen.
  24. ^Boy, I don't even know where to begin with all that.
  25. Did anyone notice the blurb in Section B of the PD today? The potential mystery buyer (clearly K & D) and the seller (Goldbergs) are apparently being quite clever in their effort to approve the demolition of the Dollar Bank building for parking access for the 668 Building. They are touting a plan to extend East 6th Street to Prospect and then redevelop the new short extension in an area similar to East 4th Street. Not a big fan of tearing down any building on this part of Euclid for any reason...but it the developers successfully convince the city to approve the demolition for this type of plan, my big fear is that such a project couple languish for years if not done right and all you would have would be a barren street.
